  1. I have been using a Vista HC and a Vista HCX for many years now and have frequently changed position formats from UTM ( for mapping in the field ) and Lat / Long ( for geocaching ) with ease. My new unit the Oregon 400t is a very nice unit. My problem is when I go to Setup / Position Format and select UTM then go back to the main menu and select Map or Compass ( with data fields) it still shows the position in Lat / Long.

I have updated the firmware to Garmins newest release. Any input would be apprieciated, cause it would be a great bennifit for me to work in UTM s. Thanx

  2. Hi Rusty,

I use an expensive GPS unit for surveying in the forest industry. After a days work in the field, collecting data, which includes GPSing roads, creeks, crossings, and cutblock boundaries, the data logger is downloaded to a PC. A GPS base station is used as well which collects postions on the satalites. With post processing software, the data is combined and a differential corection is done. This gives a sub meter acuracy. From here the data is entered into a (GIS) Geographial Information System as a layer which produces digital maps. Another option is working in real time, which has the GPS unit linked to the base station via handheld radio.

  3. I have been GPS ing for many years on a comercial level. The unit I use is a Trimble TSC1 Data logger with a Pro XRS Reciever. This unit may be over kill for geocaching but it is all i got. I am new at this (1 week now). What are your thoughts. Thanx.
