  1. Does this mean that you tried it and are no longer using it for caching? I'd like the ability to use GPS with my PDA while in a vehicle, but I'm not comfortable using the PDA during a trek through the woods. It's one thing to have it on me to log the cache once on-site, but having it out in the open while running around is just too risky for an $800 PDA. (However I do that now with an older PDA and GPS cradle. Just looking to upgrade. ) Anyway, I want to use the wireless PDA/GPS combo while driving to the location, then use the GPS by itself to help guide me to the cache. Is the Fortuna my only hope in this scenario? From what I've found it's the only one available with Bluetooth at the moment, but I'm hoping someone may have heard that another brand/model will be released in the near future. Regards, Rich
  2. Yes, that is the meaning of MHWL. That much I'm certain of! Regards, Rich
  3. Thanks for the info everyone. I'll be heading back to the site this weekend for another look. I'll post an update shortly thereafter.
  4. Hello all, I went looking for my first benchmark yesterday on my way home from work. Its location is just over a mile from my house so I thought it would be an easy one to start with. Unfortunately I didn't have more than a few minutes to spend on the site, but I was at the right location and found what I think to be one of the reference marks listed in the description. However, I'm confused about a few things. The description states the following (emphasis mine): Does this mean that the disk is actually below the pavement, or does it mean that its location in relation to the level of pavement is 1 foot lower? The reference mark that (I thought) I found is described as: The actual mark that I found was not stamped Pawtuxet 2 No 3 1956, but it was located in what I believe to be the exact spot described. Here is a photo: If anyone can provide this newbie with some information, it would appreciated!
  5. quote:You can get a great GPS add-on for only $65. I just picked up a Magellan companion - they have a $100 rebate going on so it's only $65 in the end, not bad. Actually, the Palm Store ( http://store.palm.com ) has the Magellan Companion for $49 after the $100 rebate. I picked one up about a month ago.
  6. quote:if it says accuracy is within 20 feet, and I let it sit for a few minutes... it usually will settle in at once specific reading. This is part of my problem. I've tried several different applications for the Palm and none of them report the GPSr's accuracy (within xx feet).
  7. First, let me say that I'm not complaining about a hider's coordinates. I'm new to this game and still learning how things work. Ok, with that said, is there a way to test the accuracy of a GPS receiver? I was thinking of maybe comparing a reading of a nearby benchmark. I have a Magellan Companion for the Palm m515 and I tried to find my first cache today. My GPSr showed that I was within 5 feet of the original coordinates; however the landscape wasn't even close to the hint that was listed with the cache. Before I try to find this cache again, I'd like to make sure that my GPSr is working ok. I understand that it's not perfect. I just want some peace of mind.
  8. Although we're just getting starting, and haven't been out for an actual cache hunt yet, I do have a plan for this situation. We have two accounts, one for me, and one for both of us. There's little chance that my girlfriend will ever do this on her own (at least for the moment) so a team account works best for us. If I should happen to discover a cache on my own, I'll log it as a personal find with my own account.
  9. I have the Magellan Companion for the Palm m515.
  10. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'm hoping to find my first cache this weekend so I'll be doing some downloading tomorrow.
  11. I just received my first GPS on Monday. I decided to go with the Magellan Companion for the Palm m500 series (I have an m515). Mainly because the Palm Store had it on sale, and combined with the rebate the price was only $49. What software packages would you recommend using? My main use for the GPS, and the reason I bought it, is Geocaching. I'll probably use it for travel planning and such, but the software it came with is good enough for that. Regards, Rich
