  1. that is why i still carry the compass and topo. also have a good working knowledge of maps and terrain association. they were found. great ending!!! robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible
  2. i use it to print topos and arials of the areas we are about to cache in. the arial shots sometimes give away hints as to path orientation, and hazards in the area. the topos help plan on whether or not the kids will survive the walk in/ out. i download my tracks, routes, waypoints after a cache and save them for reference. just a smattering. i am sure someone will come on with more advice and programs to use. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible

  4. approved brian, is there a way to edit the bio or photo once it is sent in? i did a fast cheesy bio, and clipped a quick photo from some waterfall in the Cats. just curious.. you may have figured it out already. robbie they answered my question already. email a new bio or photo and they update it for you. quick response. 6. robree and kiddies set out today to hit a few evening caches, and to do a little field medic work. THE CACHE DOCTORS IN THE FIELD we hit a local cahe in a small park, and then beat our way into an adjoining park. we hit GC297 at about 1930 and it was a mess. broken tupperware and a wet logbook. well, we went to work. we triaged and did some quick rebagging of the log book.. double zips, and a new pen and pencil combo. we ziplocked the goodies and ziplocked the whole tupperware. we will return on a sunny day and dry out the logbook. many many entries! this is the 17th cache placed in NY state, and the 1st on LI as far as i can tell. the kiddies feel they did a huge service to GeoCommunity. they are now sleeping like babies after a busy day. robree and kiddies A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible

  8. wish i had made it. was stuck in harlem all night. a young lad was stricken with several points of acute lead poisoning, and we had to stay in the area. sounds like all had a great time!!! robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible

  14. to coin or not to coin a term "geoPacking" my wife calls it that. i carry, due to job requirement, and family security. interesting take on law. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible
  15. yes, it comes right out. it also adjusts to different angles to suit your needs. it has three suction cups that are sufficient to hold the ST. mine fell once because i had just washed my windows. wet the cups a little and they will hold for days. good luck robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible

  18. "Another small loop to a scenic spot is to take the Black Dome trail over Blackhead Mtn and return via the yellow trail (forget its name)." that is a family favorite. we love the views on the adjoining trails. artists rock etc. this pic may be familiar. that is from about 6 years ago.. top of the falls. 19. my kids take matchbox cars and mickieD toys, and we try to leave something of higher value. i like army surplus items and small survival/outdoors stuff to leave. BUT the items are not our reason for Geocaching. the whole event from preparation to find really gets the kids going. they love to plot out waypoints of cool animals, and flowers/trees etc. we carry National audobon society field guides to identify species, and the kids log new "finds." we love hikes in the 1-2 mile range for the kids (5 and 7 years old.) i like brians idea of a repair kit of sorts. ziplocks, and stash items to bring up the value of a deteriorated cache. it is funny though how a box of soggy baseball card will make my son smile. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible
  20. thanks to all that hide! thanks alot for the hours and hours of fun. we find RPAs (Bayonets4u in NY!!) caches to be alot of fun. the kids love 'em. and since it is not raining monsoon style today we will be tackling two late afternoon caches! thanks again guys and gals! robree and kiddies ps - we will be hiding our first real soon. all layed out by the kiddies and themed by them. 23. i think all GPSr's are susceptible to anomalies. mine has "freaked out" a few times too. never for an extended period of time. the storms, and certain cloud cover i think can hurt the signal.. maybe bend a signal??? great tools, with some freaky problems at times. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible
  24. yep thanks for a great site! kudos to jeremy and crew! A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible
  25. gimpygoo you can buy a regular topo at rei, but can you plot a point on it? if you can.. great. that topo will be great to have in the future if you go back to the area a few more times. look into easyGPS and expertGPS. they allow you to enter points or download directly from this site. you can print or export the maps. you can also look at an arial view which may be helpful. there are some other programs on here too.. quakemap comes to mind. good luck in your quest. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible
