  2. my kids love the mctoys, but are only allowed to leave "new in pkg" ones if trading for a toy. we bring extra items to put in, but they seem to love finding toys. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site! 3. permanone permethrin and sulfur are my battle plan. chemical warfare on the tiny bastages. lyme disease is no joke. a good thorough check and removal if necessary. ticks found at home are dealt with. they get wax candle interrogation (after removed.) no "catch and release" practiced here (bass yes, ticks NO!). robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site!

  8. we just did a 1/1 weary traveler that was placed feb of 2001. we fixed it up a little, because by my research this was Long Islands first cache. if i have anything to do with it.. it will be around for years to come. i can see some cache locations lasting for many years. some could stand to be moved a little to lessen the impact. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site!
  9. no ahhhhh you addressed the kids as i prepared this... don't forget the kiddies! we do 1/1s and 2/2s because we only have monday afternoons for now, and two kids tagging along. 5 and 7 year olds need to be broken into this kind of stuff. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site!
  10. mike funny... we just went back to 35mm. i like the digital stuff, but love a great 35mm print. backwards as usual. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site!
  11. i've said it before that my kids like to trade the mctoys for mctoys. i try not to let them take something of value for a toy. we leave items like p38 can openers and bug repellant without even stating it in a log. the most fun the kids have now is rebagging with new ziplocks to improve a cache. they call themselves CacheDocs now. if i find a cache with nothing in it but a logbook i am still happy for the find and hike and day outside with family. i do understand your disappointment though. you seem to be quite resilient, and have a good attitude about the cache itself. keep hiding and finding!!! robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site!
  12. using the magellan sportrak pro with S&D i have found the maps to be off a little. they are acceptable.. but at times streets are missing or off enough to make an error. if you rely on the disk just be aware of its shortcomings. in NYCity using the ST Pro and S&D it looks as if you are in between two streets or avenues sometimes. sometimes it is dead on. more of a mapping probelm than a signal problem. if i upload a point from expert gps marking a street corner it usualy is right on target though. i upload waypoints from topos online and check against the actual roads, and features.. dead on accuracy on the road, but the points will look like they are off the roads in streets and destinations. takes a little getting used to. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site!
  13. they left more than junk... they all left some compliments on what appears to be quite a succesful first hide!! great job. if i lived close to it i would visit and restock some cool stuff for you. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site!
  14. i strongly encourage people to leave items with logos on them.. magellan garmin duracell energizer us mint cartier etc. on the real side.. my kids really like the key fobs and pencils they find. lots of that kind of stuff here. if i start seeing corpoate questionaires in caches i'll be PO'd. lol. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site!

    Hi all

when your GPSr shows you are pretty close... stop, take a breather and let the GPSr "find itself." this way you will not look like a complete friggin wierdo doing the bumblebee dance chasing signals all over the trial. if you are with people... they will appreciate this. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site!
  16. nice website http://www.lnt.org/ if we are talking Low Impact hiking/camping/caching then we are in. i belv, and practice these ideals to the best of my ability. i have been teaching my children low impact practices, and it seems to be taking. we study plants, trees, animals and they are growing to appreciate their surroundings. the eco-terrorists do more harm for nature than good. there are ways to get things done, and ways to alienate the world. i drive a pretty big 4wd (not huge) and can get places pretty easily without tearing up trails. it is a matter of taking it easy. 33"x12.5" tires could be devestating if spun without need. i hope your cacher didn't tear up the area. looks to be a nice cache by the way low impact to the environment all the way. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site!
  17. we currently use photo shop and paint shop pro. i am really liking the gimp and irfanview. thanks for the insight guys and gals. this is what i love about forums. something new to try, and maybe like. i feel all warm and fuzzy right now! robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site!

  19. if no one here claims it.. bring it to your local police station and drop it off for domestic violence services. they give them to people that are in really bad domestic situations as part of an emergency kit. you get a write off too. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible
  20. OC - Oleoresin Capsicum - pepper spray. replaced mace products for most law enforcement. depending on the concentration of OC it may be illegal to possess certain products if not a law enforcement officer. some lower concentrations are allowable, but beware... OC is not 100% effective, and is not always an instant disorienting device. i have been involved in numerous incidents with OC spray, and do not feel it is a solid tool. training, wind, different levels of product resistance, etc affect it too much. i have been sprayed by other officers by accident in a large crowd, and i have been able to continue to perform at about 80% capacity after being sprayed. do some research before relying on OC. it is merely an additional tool to me. let's not take to much away from this discussion at hand. robbie robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible
  21. we have three new families interested and looking for GPSrs. they are really psyched at the opportunity to get out in the woods in a new way. once again a great way to get the kids out of the house and away from x, playstation, gameboy etc. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible

"heck, that scares me and I'm fearless" ok, if you quote what i put up there out of context. don't return with an off the wall moronic response. read my posts as to why i carry a sidearm. i am required by LAW to be armed at all times. i don't have the leisure of saying no. it is a requirement of my job while in my geographic area of employment. use someone else as your launch board my friend. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible
  23. quote: If you open a second file, why not pop up a little dialog box and ask "Append to existing list? Overwrite list? Open new tab?". It automatically puts the new file in a new tab, without ever offering any other options. Most people would rather it append to the existing list, but that's not even offered. yeah, that one is a PIA, i end up cutting and pasting into the tab i want it. it works out, but is a wasted step. are they open to suggestions from users.. i notice a few programmers in here are very open to suggestions and act on them readily. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible
