  1. my goto line from moving position redraws and disappears for a bit then reappears. it's there, but redraws as i move around. no reboots that i have seen. biggest problem i see is initializing... finds 3 or 5 sats and just hangs... doesn't roll to map mode. i have to shut off and re-initialize. still love the dam-n thing. robbie
  2. a) my boots have to fit exact! b ) once i find a pair they better last for years. c) must be resolable sp? must accept new soles. i really feel the sole of a boot can change the whole aspect. i have danners, military issues and herman survivors that have had frequent sole changes and leather replenishment by pros. if you find a good long lasting boot that holds its ground on wet rock and snow... keep em!!!! robbie
  3. proposed and current legislation california vehicle code.. read page 2 27602. No person shall drive a motor vehicle which is equipped with a television receiver, screen, or other means of visually receiving a television broadcast which is located in the motor vehicle at any point forward of the back of the driver's seat, or which is visible to the driver while operating the motor vehicle. This section shall not apply to a mobile digital terminal installed in a law enforcement vehicle. read subs 1( b )1 vehicle info display 2 global positioning display 3 mapping display 4 clearance and manuevering camera display 5 TV with interlock disabling device. sub 1( b )6 police MDTs not prohibited. is your Police vehicle clause. should dispel any myths, and spell it out. ask for a current VTL book at your motor vehicle dept. should be free or like 1$. robbie oh yeah --- i will not be held liable for any info provided here. provided as opinion, and not law. so don't quote me in court.. lol.
  4. police departments are exempt from VTL in most states. if you read the front end of your states Vehicle and Trffic Law there is usually an exemption included. i would find that discretion would be necessary in enforcing the computer code. i use a laptop for GPS mapping in my auto. 15" screen is better than a calculator size screen. i will look at the CA code and see it's flaws and limitations. remember law is interpretable. a few cases of laptop GPSr use will allow for a change in code also. my opinion robbie
  5. what is the gift made of? metal? did you bury it? ask around for friends with metal detectors. also check for locals online with metal detectors. could be a fun hunt for them. what town city are you in? could direct you to a source. robbie
  6. delorme makes a soloution for 100$. i have the older version that you can get for under 60$ now. hooks right up and sits on dash. i like the expandability of the better gpsr models, and didn't belv i would want it either. put a lot of thought into how you will use it, and what it will be used for. just food for thought. robbie
  7. running 1700s 2000s and 2300s. they all seem to be same size. the shorter ones would P me off. powerex and a maha charger!! my only choice! love them. they all seem to be same size when measured point to tail. robbie
  8. i really like the meridian platinums 3 axis compass as a convenient plus. but... i only have the non magnetic compass of my sportrak. it is ok while moving, but i won't rely on it as my only compass. i carry my trusty Stocker Yale also. some may recognize it as the old military standard lensatic compass. i have spent many a night on a "route", and in unfamiliar territory with a topo and the old crusty trusty... so i rely on it. the compass on the GPSr to me is an added +. opinion. robbie
  9. the aluminum cases available are amazing. i keep my ipaq in an aluminum case and in a sack made by my wife. on the trail it goes in an aquasack as does my sportrak pro. i use the ipaq 1940/45 with a 512SD card. it is a great tool to have. i run my journal pro and gpxsonar. paperless!! delorme offers a bluetooth soloution for gps.. not tooo $$$. i might pick it up soon. i am still open to suggestions though for software. robbie
  10. disregard my last question. i'm a boob. i figured it out robbie we love your program.. it allows us a little more freedom to just cache whenever. we used to print out tons of cache pages and maps... no more. maps and pages on ipaq!! r
  11. question gpxsonar users.... under distance i keep getting numbers in the 5000 mile range with caches that are 2-5 miles away. i read what i could and did some searching. any help correcting this would be greatly appreciated. robbie
  12. we own a mag 315 a mag sportrak pro and a mag merigold. of all i find the merigold to be the best. it is a bit larger than my sportrak pro, but feels solid and well built. the battery plug on the sportrak is not the weak spot. it seems pretty darn solid. it screws in like a submarine door. the weak spot is created by the screws in the case sides. both of my sportraks have developed stress cracks in short periods. one was fried on the deleware river. they are NOT waterproof. nowhere near it. buy an aquasack bag and have peace of mind! robbie

JMB the DNF we logged the other day prompted people to email us little hints. we used some of the hints and went back to find it. that footbridge cache is hidden so well, but yet so obvious. makes you wonder why when you look so hard, you don't see what is really there. great hide. we always log the DNFs, and this log paid off big. robbie

  19. DOCDEAN your intentions are great! this has turned into a political debate of foolish proportions, i say this, for you were just honoring a friend, and 3000 some odd other husbands, wives, children, friends that were killed. i will honor your friend by telling my children the name and where they perished. they will include the name in their prayers tonight. i care not for the political madness that we find ourselves in today. i strive to change the things i can.... i responded to this incident with my fellow partners, i experienced the tragedy, and i will honor those that were lost. all of the political to and fro that we see here just takes away from the memory of the people we lost. let those that wish to honor friends, family, and coworkers do so. i don't agree or disagree with your arguments... i just ask that you let the people that wish to remember have a day to do so. ---- robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site! 20. i was awakened by my son, who at the time was turning 4. he said "daddy your city is on fire, and you have to go to work... don't go." i drove in 64 miles on the shoulder of roads, and against the flow of traffic moving away from the city. my two partners and i made the 64 miles in about 45 minutes. i returned home 3 days later for a shower and a dinner with my family, a few hours later returned to manhattan. i remember sleeping to work again.. not returning home.. just sleeping in tents and abandoned buildings rejoining teams to search again. what i remember most was the first two nights running into steel workers, and firemen from alabama, missouri, chicago etc that threw on gear and rode amtrak to help out.... those men and women are my heros! my heart is filled with the memories of the people that died that day, and that will stay with me forever. god bless america, not just a country, but the millions of men women and children that make up this free land that has the compassion to help one another and the balls and courage to hunt down the freaks that planned these attacks. be safe all. with pride, honor and respect, robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site! 22. look along the side of the sportrak and see if there are stress cracks where the screws go into the body. if yes, magellan will replace the unit. give thales navigation -- magellan -- a call. i recvd a new unit in 3 days. --- robbie waterproof = if you spit at it from 25 feet, it will still work. 23. i use the streamlight scorpion and streamlight stingers at work. i have recently added a 2nd inova x5 light for it's 20+ hour battery life. the inova and the scorpion use lithium 123 batteries. i buy 20 st s time and they work out to 1.25 a piece. i also got a custom fitted pelican 1020 case for 24 battery storage. the pelican cases would make good small cache containers.. i get the case for 7$. --- robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site! 24. i can deliver a baby if need be. have done a few already. brookhaven and stoney brook hospitals are less than 10 minutes drive. could be an interesting note on the cache event. no pictures though. --- with respect, robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site!
