  1. you should never get a ticket for the GPSr in the window. if it is being used as a navagational aid.. it is legitimate. i would have to do some research on states other than the north east, but most state law concerning this does not affect GPSr.

there are hundreds to thousands of things a vehicle can be stopped for. the radar detector stop is almost a personal insult to state troopers as they spend a good portion of their time battling speeders. they just want us to play "fair." lol.

just be aware that a catch all law can screw up your day.. almost all states have a "obstruction of view" law in their VTL. this means nothing, nada can be placed forward of the driver, between the driver and the windshield glass. this includes pom-poms, flowers, key chains, dice, flags and of course our GPSr. this said...

i use my GPSr everywhere i go. "Gadget Geek!" i place it in a cradle and suction cup to windshield. it is directly under my mirror and -- I belv it does not block my view. i use it as a navagational aid to be aware of what roads lay ahead. sometimes i have waypoints that show major intersetions and places of interest.

a brief disply of the knowledge of the device to any officer would probably avoid a summons of any kind.

    NY Vehicle Traffic Law

    Equipment --

    375 (30)

    30. It shall be unlawful for any person to operate a motor vehicle

with any object placed or hung in or upon the vehicle, except required

or permitted equipment of the vehicle, in such a manner as to obstruct

or interfere with the view of the operator through the windshield, or to

prevent him from having a clear and full view of the road and condition

    of traffic behind such vehicle.

that is the one catch all, and most states have it.

use common sense and know how to explain the navigational aid you are using. for you radar dodgers... you are on your own.. i don't think i could even explain that one away.. lol.

  2. not to get too far OT.. but the kids love anything to do with the sky, so we look for iridium flares and other sattelite sightings. the heavens above site is great.

as for the eclipse.. since i normally bag 4-6 strong sats at a time.. one shouldn't bother me too much.

i'd be curious how much area would be affected, but i don't think anyone would even notice.

  3. in many of the articles they state that the fires may have pushed too many predators out of their territory. they then have to roam a new area, and "share" hunting territory with more preators in an already tight environment. i wouldn't be suprised if sightings, and encounters get a boost. i belv the bicyclist was apparantly fixing his chain on the bike.. maybe on his knees or in a crouch.. might look wounded to the lion. it's a shatty way to go either way.

  4. thanks for the info guys. at least i'll know when the symptoms arise. the merigold was a freebie.. actually made money on the deal. got the marine as a present.. returned it and took the gold for 65$ cheaper.. bought a 128 card for 40$ and installed streets and destinations. like it alot.

maggie shows their sloppiness in case design and overall design again.. hmmmm. the only saving grace is they have an amazing replacement policy.

  5. we recently purchased a meridain marine GPSr and it had broken battery terminals. it had a very tight fit and looked as if the terminals got bent somehow. we returned it and the next one had same problem when salesman put batteries in. once the terminals are bent, the device will not power up.

we returned the marine and now have a gold.. the terminals are alright, but are the same type as the marine ones.

has anyone else has, or have you seen this problem before??

    thanks in advance.

  6. 1. Do you have to have the MapSend softare ($80 and up) to put maps on the GPS or are there ways to do it for free?

maps are magellan only. yeah, you have to use their product. you can purchase mapsend for like 30-50$ used. you can put waypoints in using easygps, expert gps etc.

    2. Is it possible to put in an address and the GPS show you the route to take to get there?

only if you go with direct route. currently 130-160$. ooofa. too much loot for me. my laptop has routing anyway.

good luck in your quest. keep doing your homework and it will pay off. try looking for a bundled gps too. GPSr, cable, case, cdrom maps etc. that is how i bought my sportrak pro thru price club/ costco.

  7. people frequently spell things wrong... when searching ebay look under different spellings... magelan, magelllan, migellan... eventually you will score. i do this with baseball cards, electronics etc.

i may be selling one for 50$ soon as i move the kids GPS towards a mapping unit.

the 315 is a great no nonsense unit. but like i said i would save a few move duckies and go meridian or a garmin equivilant.

  8. if you are just looking for a point finder and using it for geocaching.. the 315 is good. look for an ebay auction.. hint.. look for spelling errors.. and bid 50$ and under.. you will eventually land a 315 and have fun.

i'd scrimp and save a few more bucks... coffee money and change and get a meridian with a sd card.

    my ipaq1945 has:

icbar on top: the sound icon and any config you want to st up.. the time date up top is part of icbar too.

tdlaunch - is the icon program.. you can also set the size of the icons.. don't... just leave them the original size.

    i love the iPAQ1945.

i keep it in a rhinoskin aluminum fitted case... pretty f'n strong and sturdy.

GPXSonar is my choice for geocaching!!!!!

  10. look to the left at the avatar

    they get along on caches.

learn to share the GPSr or get another.. we have a few..lol

my wife and i have a great time together, and tell her you WILL find new and exciting places to walk and enjoy nature. you will find that some geocache hiders will get you to some spectacular places that you would a ) never find, or b ) would take you years to find.

we have a few favorite hiders already. they pick cool spots!!

robbie, meredith, heather and zakk... the leahys!

  11. i f you can buy the cd used... go ahead and get it.. a copy of course would be illegal.

there is more than 1 upgrade from your version. someone can probably guide you to the next version before 5.

i find the maps to be off a little in some areas, but not enough to really bother me.

the maps are good enough for road navigation to and from caches and for use finding roads at work and play.

i would upgrade to a meridian before i would buy the sportrak series again... because of stress creacks and also for the upgradable memory option.

    opinion.

  12. every person that we have introduced to geocaching loves it. we introduce them by taking them on a hunt. i don't bother explaining GC to them until we are enroute. we look for caches as a family, and it gives us a good, "clean" fun thing to do. all of the kids love it. my wife is hooked. my dad (66) is hooked, and just bought a maggie meridian.

once people get out and try it.. they can't stop.

  13. cruzin - almost every state has adopted the "forward of the driver"rule. it makes sense when you seen dumb people with screen lock. they look at the screen and don't look up. we have the law in NY, and in almost 12 years i have only enforced it once. driver stated "i was looking at the tv and all of a sudden the guy pulled out in front of me."

it is a shame when people can't control themselves and must be "legislated."

we all suffer in the longrun.

i use the 15" screen of my laptop as it provides a large, crisp image and i onl have to glance at it. the screen on my maggie STPro is a little small for auto navigation. my laptop supports routing through street atlas and has much more accurate mapping.

i would never try to watch a movie while driving though.
