hmmmmm.Salvelinus ....
trout are fun.
but Micropterus salmoides are more fun,
and Micropterus dolomieui are the bestest!!!!
fishing is why i bought a gps. geocaching was a direct result of the research process of buying the gps.

high volume smoke grenades in yellow and purple -
pencil flares
strobe - air force rescue type.
--- for marking extraction to SAR units.
lol
at least you are psyched to get out and give it a shot. learn to use the gps and compass before believing they will take you home!! learn to set a waypoint, and set them at all major trailheads. that will help you backtrack in case you get discombobulated out there.
good luck.
i am new to geocaching, but have been navigating through the woods for years. gps is a great tool, but often limited by the operator of the unit.

route, goto, backtrack i am within easy distance of any points i choose to track. the sportrak pro is really treating me well. i was going to get a plat, but decided to really get to know this unit first. nothing but happiness so far. using it every single day. the maps included are off a bit.. but any track, points, routes i put into expert gps really hit the mark.
i know sometimes guys get bad units. any electronics setup can have that downfall.

almost every city, state, region has "no posting" rules. in NY it is actually a form of graffitti advertising.
think about this. direct the finders to a sign. take a bearing say 120° for 50ft (aim them at a really obvious hiding spot.) in the hiding spot place a film canister weighted with washers inside. post new coordinates inside on laminated paper strip.
i ran into this at a recent local cache placed by a reputable member. i liked the 2nd leg of the trip. the first leg was to a historic spot.
many other options than posting out on the pole.
my opinion only.

i went out today looking at local benchmarks. i was just looking for an answer as to how to log the buildings. i have numerous BMs with no visible mark.. just a church spire or stack chimney. is it legit to post pics of the spire/chimney and location. my kids are really excited to search out some of the landmarks as well as caches. they love to take pics, and check out the site.
thanks

i have to say that the reason i got the sportrak was the cost and items i recvd with the unit. it is really accurate. i have used it everyday since i bought it.
i would love to get my hands on the platinum for expandable memory, but the sportrak has plenty of memory for now.
the platinum sd slot is located inside the battery comoartment. has a thin rubber gasket that should keep water out.. rain won't affect it. dunking may. i would use a silicone gasket material and some oil to form a better compression gasket...... but i digress...
sportrak for price and extra stuff.
platinum for MEMORY.. and barometer (whooop), and something you can beat a bear with.. lol

same type history here..
been on boards for years.. new to geocaching.
there are many companies that make the product you want. range is about 20 - 80$. go with a store that allows returns. some include gender changer for the serial end also.
i have used them for many other applications.
hope someone with legend can also answer up.

my partner at work has the legend, and i have the spotrak pro. when entering manhattan he loses signal completely, and has a hard time regaining. my sportrak maintains a signal under same exact conditions.
he also complains of signal loss under light tree canopy. i have not had that problem. as i type here.. my unit is showing 5 satts in my living room.
sportrak map vs pro.. pro for the memory.
platinum vs sportrak pro.. plat for expandable memory.
i went with the pro for price vs options. it has plenty of memory for me. may upgrade in the future, and give wife the pro.
just babbling here, but good info.

That doesn't sound strange to me at all. The only reason I carry my own weapon (SW 908) is to defend against dogs who want to bite either myself, my family, or my own pup. For what it's worth, I only carry in remote areas.careful with the dogs and guns. i carry legally 24/7 for employment reasons. dogs are very hard to hit. carry a small co2 fire extinguisher.. dogs can't attack through the spray, and will turn and back down.. i promise you this. pepper spray and co2.
as far as the gun goes, i carry always in remote areas.
i am new to geocaching but have hiked for eons----
as far as gear - duct tape and bailing wire can fix anything.
flashlights
first aid - "A" bag.
benedryl is a must
water, and more water.
spare lensatic compass and a primary
always local and topos
energy - power bars and or trail foods.
stobe - military blink light.
3 pencil flares (boat kit)
waterproof matches in case
duct tape
wire
ponchos 2 - military style.
--- could live under these for a long time.
knife - utility style is all i feel is necessary. my partner carries a machete in his pack - gets weird looks - lol - but it is useful at times.
socks, and underwear - yep.
------feet---------
benzoine tincture - and a small syringe. -- its an old special forces, and ranger thing.. but i digress.
foot powder
bandaids
moleskin
-------------------
bagbalm
paracord 500ft.
i can become self sufficient at this level
.38 S&W Centennial.
end of list
a few other items make it in
snivel gear - rain gear and such
cellphone - always off full battery.
batteries, batteries, batteries.
whisper light white gas stove
coleman fuel
ramen
i am also looking to buy an iSun 12v solar kit. really small solar power unit!!!!

You can even buy 'em built into watches for your kids, and log onto the net to see where they are, and where they've been.where the watch has been. LOL. i would have brought it to the library, and picked it back up when done carousing. LOL.

good to see. i just ordered the maha c240f and 4 powerex 1800s + some extras thrown in .. 12v cord, and some battery holders.
i did some research on my own and purchased them. now i see posts on them, and they are all favorable.
will do a thorough test on them.

i'll have to look for a new pair soon. my current favorite boots are 4 years old. herman survivors. they would have made it many more years had i not used them at GZ. i have a few tears in welt due to debris. still love them.
can you still buy these
Fire burns, and when it rains... you get wet.

i was under heavy clouds, trees, and even in my house the sportrak pro held a decent signal. in house 4 sats and waas.

sportrak map
or pro?

used it again today. kids found two caches and a travel bug!! learned a few more tricks, and how to customise the menus. i like it more now! mapsend maps are not too accurate, but still think they are ok. at times in a state park today.. i was shown in an adjacent neighborhood. lol. but - it locked onto sattelites while in my house!! and lead me within inches of 2 cache locations today.
more as i play.
the battery compartment is a screw in fitting, and o-ring seal.. nice.
the window suction cup holder is nice. the power unit snaps into it, and when you snap the GPSr into it.. ready to go.
case is snug and protects the screen. down arrow is diff to press in case, but it works out.
learned to upload and download waypoints and routes today. and how to properly set up wpts and rtes.
i like it.
they do too!!!!

i am new to geocacheing.. but not to the other uses for gps. i just bought that package.
i uploaded all streets for my area.. long island (suffolk and nassau), queens, brooklyn, bronx, and staten island. and a little more. that took 7.5 mb of the available 23 for extra maps. that's not bad.
you can delete and re load maps as often as you like. the us basemap is always available in the unit.
i like it. do a little research though and formulate a decision. the meridian platinum unit itself can be found for abbout 239 online and offers limitless memory configuration through the use of SD cards. about 40-50$ for 64mb card.
as i said -- research a little.
look here - a thread on same track.
sportrak pro or meridian platinum
GPS units and software. tons of info
hope it helps

thanks for info and decent thread. was going to post similar question, but searched this out. only other question is ..
what is most dependable brand? and does that really matter??
i have several devices.. GPSr, mp3 player, flashlights that use AAs, and want to consolidate into rechargeables.

it may take me a while, but i will find the reference to the origin and why it did not take. super glue can be dissolved by our own body fluids. saliva will dissolve it quite readily. this was the reason i had found that stopped its medical usage.
for the treatment of blisters on feet in the army we used to use a syringe to remove fluid, and inject a small amount of benzoine tincture (owwwwwwwwwww!) and the seal small pucture with super glue. this would eliminate the blister and clean and seal the wound.
quite radical, but necessary when force marching 30-50 miles.
"what good are you if you don't get there in working order?"
super glue saved me a few times.
