  3. If, by some miracle, some of the caches of today survive that long, will the coordinates be any good? I was reading this on the web from The National GPS Network: "Secondly, note that the axes of the WGS84 Cartesian system and, hence, all lines of latitude and longitude in the WGS84 datum, are not stationary with respect to any particular country. Due to tectonic plate motion, different parts of the world move relative to each other with velocities of the order of ten centimetres per year. The International Reference Meridian and Pole and, hence, the WGS84 datum, are stationary with respect to the average of all these motions. But this means they are in motion relative to any particular region or country. In Great Britain all WGS84 latitudes and longitudes are changing at a constant rate of about 2.5 centimetres per year in a north-easterly direction. Over the course of a decade or so, this effect becomes noticeable in large-scale mapping. Some parts of the world (for example, Hawaii and Australia) are moving at up to one metre per decade relative to WGS84." Will everything be converted to another Datum? will cache owners be responsible for updating coordinates every so often? Why do I care? (I don't know...just thought it would get people's minds off famous lines from movies!) "Could be worse...could be raining"

  14. My first thought was the forums 'geocaching group by country', but perhaps another thought is to do a cache search for caches in the cities you are looking at, find a few active cachers (one's that have a lot of cache placements in town), and try e-mailing them directly through their profile. I thought this might get you a more enthusiastic and experienced cacher that might be willing to go the extra mile for you. "Could be worse...could be raining"

  16. I am looking to place a cache on a trail that is the property of a nearby college. I have a good working relationship with an administrator there, and in our initial talks he seems inclined to accept and approve the cache placement, but he brought up the question of the school's liability. The disclaimer that is linked to each cache page delineates geocaching.com's liability, if I am reading it right. Does it extend to properties where caches are placed? Could someone more familiar with such legal matters enlighten me? "Could be worse...could be raining"
  17. My catagory was not on the poll: 'Only when I really, really want to be FTF' I've night cached a few times in my caching carreer, and it is a very strange experience. with the dimming of the light, sound seems to become intensified and it is harder to get an auditory fix. For me, it is a bit thrilling and scary and fun at the same time. But unlike others in my area that night cache all the time, I won't make a habit of it. "Could be worse...could be raining"
  18. I had heard about geocaching, but it was not until my husband actually won a GPSr at a computer geek convention that I got one and started my addiction. Now another GPSr, cables, mounts, software geoswag, hiking equipment, PDA, etc. later, the free GPSr has actually cost us quite a bit! "Could be worse...could be raining"
  19. I watch one of my all time favorite caches...a way difficult multi with both physical and puzzle portions. Having completed it, I like to hear of others that join this exclusive fraternity. Others I watch are those in my area that might have lots of 'do-dads' on the cache page (sound loops, animation, etc.) that slow down my computer too much or drive me nuts with the sound. That way I can read the posts and never have to pull up the pages and bog down my computer. "Could be worse...could be raining"
  20. Bloen Customs, I hope that you are not replying to my post in this thread. (since it is immediately above yours). I think that my example is one of the 'exceptions to the rule'. I spent the first half of my life in this other area and would venture to state that I know the town better than any other cacher in its surrounding area. I would be able to introduce the geocaching community to some interesting sites and would not be stepping on any other cacher's toes. I think that compelling cases for exceptions to the vacation cache rule should be heard and considered. "Could be worse...could be raining"

    GPS r?

quote:Originally posted by TotemLake:Well it makes since to call it a GPSr. Not ending it with an 'r' indicates you do have a _G_lobal _P_ositioning _S_atellite in your pocket instead of a _r_eceiver, which is what it is. It really isn't anal retentive or redundant to call it a receiver in conjunction with GPS. Cheers! TL No, what is redundant are the countless individuals who talk about an ATM machine !!! 22. This post will probably overlap some of the others above it that I skimmed through, but I wanted to put in my two cents as well. We go and visit my Dad in So. California 3 - 4 times a year. He has gone caching with us and understands the game. The particular community he lives in (and where I was born and raised) is cache-free. Lots and lots of caches nearby, but if you look at a cache map, you see a big blank space surrounding his house. I assume it is because no one in this town has caught the 'caching bug'. I would like to place a cache or two down there next time I visit and will lobby for their approval by adding a note to the cache report 'For Admin Use Only - Remove When Posting This Cache' stating that my father has agreed, along with myself to maintain this cache. I would further note in the body of the cache page that this cache is being maintained locally and if there are any problems with the cache to e-mail me and it will receive attention. (or some other verbage that would be agreeable to Admin.) Forum readers - whaqt are your thoughts on an arrangement like this? Admin - would something like this work for you? I think that the vacation cache rule could be modified to allow for situations such as this wherby local support of the cache would be identified and verified prior to admin approval. 23. This may sound lame, and probably will not help pizzachef, but I did get my map downloaded. Yes I had previously done a 'Card Utilities / Format Card' as well as a 'Card Utilities / Test Card' , but talking it over tonight, the concept of the difference in formatting between the card reader/writer (using the drag and drop method of downloading the files through my computer's file manager), and the Meridian itself as a possible sticking point was brought up. A message of 'Invalid Detail Map File' probably being the result of the GPSr not being able to read the file contained on the SD card properly. Took a chance and performed 'Card Utilities / Format Card' again. Was prompted that I would loose all my data, but went ahead and did it. Lo and behold, all the data was still there and I was able to select the map file I wanted. Why it did not erase all the stored data, I have no clue.....but it's working! Nice tips, TotemLake...I will use them when I add to my card. "Could be worse...could be raining"
  24. I have a Meridian with a 128m SD card. I got a USB card reader/writer because I got tired of how long it took to load maps (I switch from No. California to So. California enough to make this a real hassle) Loaded two fat, juicy maps on the card (with room to spare). Followed the advice of Leatherman on another topic on this forum ('Do I need a card reader/writer?') When I went to change maps on the GPSr via 'Menu / Card Utilities / Change Map / Detail Map', I got the message 'Invalid Detail Map File'. FYI - Yes, I have the latest version of the Meridian software. Was I just too greedy with the size of the maps I loaded on my card? Is that the problem when I try to change maps? How many maps can you load on a SD card? I understand that the Meridian can only handle 4 maps, but are you constrained to that amount on your card? I looked, but could not find this information anywhere. Thanks for any advice y'all can give me. "Could be worse...could be raining"
  25. quote:Originally posted by leatherman: The generation of maps for the reader is very much the same. However you do not connect your Meridian to your computer. Once you select your map/regions and name them, check mark the maps/regions then select regions/upload to GPS… in the above tool bar. Regions upload will appear select ok to continue. Mapsend will begin generating the maps and attempt to connect to your GPSr. The connection will fail with an ERROR alert. Select OK. Now you can close out of your Mapsend program. The next steps will not need Mapsend. Make sure that your SD card reader is connected to your computer. Insert your SD card into the reader. It may self open, if not than navigate to the reader directory in My Computer/C:. Now navigate to the maps/regions you created. Select this path My Computer/C:/Program Files/Magellan/your Mapsend software/Export/Images. In this directory you will find .img with the map names you assigned. Now simply drag and drop or copy and paste or cut and paste these on to your SD card. You’re done. Take out your SD card and insert it into your Meridian. To load a map from your SD card, select menu/card utilities/change map/. Detail map will be highlighted. Click enter. Select the .img file you want, click enter, then save. Repeat this step each time you want to change maps. I am thinking that I have too old a version of the Mapsend Topo software, because when I follow Leatherman's directions and get to the end where I selc=ect the .img file from 'Change Map', I get a message: 'Invalid Detail Map File'. BTW, it's Mapsend Topo 3.0 Can someone confirm that it is my software version, and/or is there something else I am missing , etc., etc. "Could be worse...could be raining"
