  1. Wow, you're on a roll! The wedding I had this weekend had the ceremony up in Virginia City, and it killed me to know there was a bunch of caches in the area that I hadn't found yet. So maybe we could do a cache day up in VC? Up gieger grade to vc, then down 6-mile canyon and back through carson city, or maybe even back up 50 to silver springs and back to reno through fernley?
  2. Okay, I know I'm coming across as a flake, but whats the term... "sometimes life gets in the way". I have the wedding to go to today and have friends coming in from out of town that will stay with us. Plus we have to be there by 3 and I thought it wasn't till 5. Good thing my wife keeps track of stuff like that So... Lets make a plan for next saturday, I have nothing going on and will make solid plans for the day. We could maybe meet up half way between reno and fallon, or just meet here in town. I had brought up going to the UNR area with Lostinreno, there seems to be quite a concentration of caches in the area. I usually have my laptop with me, and I could load a bunch of caches into it and bring it along. If you have a cable for your gps we could download them to it so everyone has the waypoints.
  3. If this weekend doesn't work, next weekend would be great as well. I have a wedding to go to saturday evening so I wouldn't be able to dedicate too much time. I've hit quite a few in the hills off of pyramid, but if you guys would want to hit them I'd be happy to go along. The loop out pyramid highway to the lake, then back to Wadsworth/Fernley looks to be packed with caches. And back to sparks on 80 has quite a few. I think we could beat that record of 21 pretty easy []

  5. Sounds like I missed a good time on Saturday, but it was a worthwhile cause. I was able to interview and get a job working for the factory Dodge Viper race team this season. Its a part time fly-in mechanic/engineer position for now, which will hopefully move to a full time gig, so I've been on cloud 9 all weekend. Nothing like landing your dream job! Hopefully we can get a caching meet together again soon. Possibly saturday morning in sparks?
  6. I'm using the Holux GPSlim on my treo 680 pda phone and love it. It will acquire a signal from a cold start in about 40 seconds or so, and from a warm start its right at about 10 seconds or so. With the sirf III I can have the receiver in my pocket and still pick up an excellent signal. I can also have it on the seat of my car and get a good signal, as where my etrex would usually drop the signal in the same location. Have you checked out the Geoniche software? Its designed for offroad and geocaching use and is an absolutely great program. All your waypoints and notes in one program. Another thing that I've found to be fun is if you are with one or two other people, get to where the receiver shows your about 20ft of the cache, then have one person walk around with the receiver, and the other sit with the pda/phone. The bluetooth will easily broadcast around 30ft out doors, so the person with the phone picks up the signal from the person walking with the receiver. You can then tell them if they're getting closer, and how close. Its like an high-tech version of "colder and warmer". Kids love it, plus the person actually looking for the cache can keep they're eyes open instead of looking at the gps needle.
  7. If you're out and about try your local best buy or circuit city, I thought they would be much higher than the internet retailers, but I found a 2gig at best buy for 34.99, and circuit city had one for 39.99 with a 5 dollar mail in rebate. They are limited time offers, so you have to just catch them at the right time. I bought one at best buy, and decided to go back 2 days later to get another one and they were back up to 70.
  8. Hey, wont be able to meet up tomorrow nor make the dinner. I had a prior commitment that I thought was going to fall through but it didn't at the last minute. So hopefully I can meet up with some of you soon and do some caching!
  9. Wifi with a browser like the pda's have. That way you could go online to check for new caches and use programs like google maps to pull up satellite image maps, solve puzzles using the internet, etc.
  10. My wife and I have our phones together on a family plan through cingular. I believe its 59 a month for like 500 minutes, but we get shared mobile to mobile with anyone on cingular, and most of my friends and family are on cingular so I never go over in minutes. I dont have a data plan yet, but I will probably be getting one soon. Go with the unlimited MediaNet plan for $19, the salesperson will try to tell you that you have to go with the 40 dollar data plan, but just add the media plan online. You'll get unlimited data and 200 free messages a month.
  11. Yeah! Thats my cache, glad you liked it. I have a couple more that are similar that I hope to be placing soon. Hoofocker is a great one too, whenever I drive by it I always get a smile on my face. All those people driving by that have no idea that its there, or what it is. I just did GCYZB2 "Jack Jr. Memorial" the other day and really liked it, it was a fun cache that had some surprises even after you found the cache. GCKH48 "All and all its just another" was a very clever hide. I'm a real mechanical person, so I really enjoy caches that people have built to be great camouflage, and I enjoy alot of the puzzle caches as well. We should all dedicate ourselves to keeping this Nevada thread going, I mainly only hit this site too so it'd be nice to have our own thread here. So who all is going to the dinner on saturday? I'm pretty sure I can make it, and hope to see everyone there. LostinReno, if you'd still like to get together sometime for some caches let me know, the more the merrier!
  12. I need to get some pics up, but I have an '02 Tacoma TRD that is awesome. I'm sure there's some pretty gnarly caches around, but I haven't found one yet that the Tacoma couldn't get me to. (Although Jeepster, placed one in my area that sounds like it may be too much for the mighty yota ). Its my daily driver, so I probably wont do anything too crazy to it, probably a small lift to fit a little bit bigger tires. I installed a lightbar with 2 KC daylighters and 2 Cibie rally lights, so getting to caches at night is no longer a problem!
  13. Bought the registered version of GeoNiche last week, and I love it! While cachemate and cachenav worked well, geoniche is so much more user friendly and powerful. While navigating caches, it only takes a click of a button to be able to read the notes and hints, where the other programs I would have to always switch back and forth. I have a Holux 236 gps reciever, and I hit 6 caches in a period of about an hour on sunday, and all of them were within 3-4 feet of the marked coordinates. And that was without the waas enabled. For anyone using a pda for caching, I definitally recommend getting geoniche, especially since its only $25!
  14. I've been using my Treo 680 for about 2 weeks now and I absolutely love it. I am running TomTom navigator 5 on it to get me to caches in the urban areas, and as close as possible in the outlying areas. I was using cachemate along with cachenav for finding caches, but last week I bough a registered version of Geoniche and its awesome. It takes a little getting used to but its so much more handy to use than cachemate. With just a couple clicks I can go from the navigation screen to the cache description to read notes and decode clues. I can mark new points from the home screen, and do offset caches. I've tried using the bluetooth receiver by both holding it in my hand, and putting it in my pocket and get excellent reception both ways. So really all you need to physically carry in your hand is the phone. Before I was lugged down with a phone, palm IIIxe pda, and my garmin gps. Now I have all that in one device. Like someone stated before, the camera is pretty low res, but its good enough to take a picture of yourself in front of landmarks like what is required of alot of virtuals. They're definitely going to be more fragile than a handheld gps, but I bought an nice silicone skin for mine that should help with some of the shock of dropping it, but it also has a hole for a lanyard. So I took the one off my garming and loop it around my wrist, so It will never fall more than about a foot. There are also waterproof cases available for them.
  15. Thanks, came home tonight and figured that out. I was actually coming on here to post that I had fixed it Since you seem to know how to fix the program, I'll assume you use it. How do you like it and how would you compare it to other caching navigators?
  16. Not to hijack the thread, but how do you Like the geoniche? Have you used any other programs such as Cetus or CacheNav, and how would you compare it to them?
  17. I just picked up a Palm Treo 680 pda phone last week and have used it to find 4 caches in the area (okay I found 3, dnf on the 4th, but that wasn't the phones fault). So far I love it, I have cachemate and cachenav on the phone, as well as TomTom Navigator 5. I bought a holux 236 bluetooth gps to serve as my reciever. I can put a HUGE amount of cachedescriptions on cachemate on the phone, look up the closest caches, then tap the "nav" button and cachenav works just like the "goto" function on my etrex. In one operation I can download the .gpx file to GSAK on my computer, then create the cachemate file, and also a point of interest file for the tomtom. I upload to the phone and get all the descriptions and coordinates in cachemate, and the POI's get overlaid on TomTom to provide driving directions to the cache location. The BT reciever I bought has the sirf III chipset and has awesome reception, I can have it running and put it in my pocket and it still provides a great signal to the phone. That way I'm not required to carry both the phone and reciever in my hands. Normally I would take my GPSr, my phone, and my old PDA out on a hunt. This setup does it all in one, plus serves as an MP3 play if desired. Also if you decide to sign up for a data plan on the phone, you will have internet access anywhere you get phone reception. Combine that with the new PDA version of Google Maps and you've got a pretty potent device. One of the downsides to this combo is a PDA is obviously more fragile than a dedicated handheld GPSr. I have just ordered a silicone skin for the phone which has a loop for a lanyard/leash. On some of the more rough terrain caches, I plan on using the lanyard that came with my etrex yellow and putting it around my neck or wrist protecting it from me dropping it. There are also waterproof case available for about $30, and a shockproof/dropproof/waterproof otterbox case available for about $90
  18. I am trying to use Cetus GPS on my Palm Treo 680 but am running into a major problem. I can launch the program fine, but I cant get out of it. None of my buttons take me back to the home screen or end the program. My home button seems to be a hot button to mark a waypoint. I cant seem to figure out how to configure the buttons to work. It seems to be a great program, but its not much good to me if I have to do a reset to get out of the program Thanks in advance
  19. I'd definitally be down to meet up and do some caching! My wife doesn't seem to get as excited about caching as I do, so I make quite a few solo runs. I've been hunting some at night after work on the way home, so much that I installed a light bar and some daylighters on the front of my truck Maybe next week after things calm down a bit we can meet up. I've been thinking of maybe forming a small team of cachers that have the same interest and time slots to cache.
  20. I'm planning on coming. I haven't bought my ticket yet as there's still a possibility I may have to go out of town that weekend, although slim. It'd be nice to meet everyone and maybe meet some new people to cache with!
  21. I started night-caching recently out of neccesity, just because its pretty much fully dark by the time I get off work during the week. Now I do it because its so much fun. I stick to the daytime for most of our urban caches around here, but for our "country caches" night time is the only way to go. We're pretty limited on hiding places out here in the desert, so its usually an ammo can under some rocks or in a small desert bush, so pretty easy to spot. You can easily add one star to the difficulty rating, not to mention the views are awesome at night looking down into the valley. I installed a light bar with 4 off-road lights onto my Tacoma that do an awesome job of lighting up the area, so with that and a good flashlight I can find pretty much anything.
  22. I was thinking of possibly starting a caching team here in my area mainly to place caches, but we would also be out hunting as well. So my question is this: Is is frowned upon to log the cache find under the team name and under your individual user name? I'm not all about numbers, but it is fun to keep track of how many caches I have found, so I'd like to keep my own personal find count. Plus later on if the team fizzles out, those finds wouldn't have to be transferred by back logging.
  23. We should make it the "Northern Nevada" thread
  24. USN 1995-1999 MR3 (Machinist) Aboard the USS George Washington CVN-73 (Nuclear aircraft carrier)
  25. No pics at the moment, but I'm using an '02 Toyota Tacoma TRD edition. This is actually my first 4WD and I'm super impressed with everything it can do. It has a locking rear diff which comes in handy with the sandy soil you can run into around here. And the dogs enjoy the shell on the bed! Its pretty much stock for now, but I did just add a light bar with two 9" 100w rally lights and two 6" 130w daylighters. Since it gets dark by the time I get off work, I figured I'd make my own geocaching light! Jeepstr, I'm pretty sure I'm in your neighborhood, drop me an email sometime and we can head out for some caches together!
