Are the Garmin Lifetime updates a scam?
Fangamon replied to AR-15's topic in GPS technology and devices
... and illegal Ever tried to get a download to actually work from the Garmin site!? http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=317399 ... some people have more cents than money! If they fixed it, I would use it! ~ -
Etrex 20 is ok. If you want a 3 axis compass then go out and buy a real compass... ...because the Garmin electronic compass is just bug ridden rubbish!

Why only 3 index pages on this 'GPS and Technology' forum? This is a great resource and to save endless repetition of the same questions why not stop the auto deleting of older topics? Instead of just 3 pages, why not 300+ pages..

Averaged coordinates seem less accurate

Even for us Australians down in the southern hemisphere? Surely not. -
The 20 stays in the pack while the H is out with me on trek.

Phew! They said that? Then it's a feature change from the older series of their GPS. My eTrex, eTrex H and eTrex Legend have NEVER done this. Now, I could buy that if it weren't for that the speed data recorded in these "straight line legs" is incorrect by a factor of about a hundred - this spoils the average speed number. There's another thread here on that. Sorry Garmin... I don't really believe this feature change is fully intentional. Yep, Etrex 20 v3.30 draws lines between power offs and ons positions and my Etrex H doesn't. No matter how I try to get up with the Etrex 20 GUI, I just find it disjointed and rubbishy. On the other hand the old Etex H is a design classic, easy to use, uncluttered and not needing updates ever again. The 20 stays in the pack while the H is out with me on trek.

Because I have a lot of maps I have the extra ones in another folder besides the Garmin folder one on the SD card in the Etrex 20. By swapping in and out imgs between the Garmin folder and the other folder on the SD card I can keep under the tile limit but sometimes maps will not show up in map setup. This is my problem, lots of imgs and can't run them all all the time because of the tile limit and now the lockout problem..

Do you guys enable WAAS with your Garmin 60CSX and 62S?
Fangamon replied to Sgt_Strider's topic in GPS technology and devices
Yes, but only in North America. Pointless any where else, as it just degrades the timings accuracy. -

This Etrex H pictured always in the hand and an Etrex 20 on but in the bag as backup. . -
The older Etrex H (yellow one) as it does what it does without all the bling! A map and compass and GPS is always the best kit!

I'll admit that I have averaged 3 waypoints near a GZ and then triangulated on a map to zero the cache, good old analog maps..

Things to look out for when buy a used GPS
Fangamon replied to greenground's topic in GPS technology and devices
Water ingress, abrasions and cracks, don't buy. Use time should be as low as possible. I recently bought an old Etrex H (yellow & no maps) for $50. I got the seller to access the service menu that showed that it's total ON time ever was only 10.5 hours. SOLD! It was as new and I am very happy with it's condition. Certainly more user friendly than my Etrex 20! -
Well yes, but if you stop Russian around... you know what I mean!
-
I have found that in the Southern Hemisphere you get better accuracy if you turn OFF the Russian option.

Well well, lookee here... Another satisfied Etrex 30 compass customer, NOT!
