  4. The Garmin Oregon 550 is still for sale. Price lowered to $310 shipped.
  5. You may want to check and be sure you don't have a filter turned on in the unit that would filter out the Cache from showing in the list of available caches. The message you are seeing may be caused by unplugging your USB cable from the GPS before closing the window on your computer. It has something to do with the way the drive, in this case the GPS, was disconnected from windows. Just close the window bfore disconnecting the USB from the GPS and that has solved the issue for me.
  6. I forgot to mention that the sale also includes the LEATHER CASE too! This really is a great deal. They sell for my asking price on ebay and those DO NOT include the mount clip or the leather case.
  7. GadgetMonster's offer was declined. Oregon 550 still for sale.
  8. Good morning. These can be had new for $499 plus $6 for shipping. Are you willing to sell any cheaper? I can pay by paypal or money order. TXcachehunter@aol.com

  10. I was just about to mention about the SN, but Jim beat me to it. This is a link to a thread with a lot of info on the Magellan GPSr's and upgrading firmware to fix the loss of receiving WAAS signals. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...185052&st=0 The conclusion is that to upgrade to the European firmware version 2.57 your unit SN must start with 118 and have a green circuit board under the battery. The 133 SN units won't take the European firmware. I haven't seen a fix for that issue anywhere. I recently bought another Magellan 600 new in the box, but it must have been on the shelf for a while because the firmware was at version 1.67. I was able to upgrade it to the European firmware, but it has the 118 SN and green circuit board. From what I have read if you have a 133 SN you can only upgrade to the latest US version of 2.03. I have been fortunate not to need to contact Magellan support, but from what I read it is usually a waste of time. Some folks are saying support is offering a free Triton 400 to those calling about the WAAS problem. You might try that approach and see if they will do that for you. Good luck!
  11. Thanks to everyone that has responded in the thread. I tried again last night, this morning, and this afternoon and in the same cars with the same GPSr's in the same windshield mount I am now getting 10 to 12 satellites all the time in the cars. I don't have XM satellite radio in either car, though I do have an Escort X50 Radar Detector in one of the cars. I tried turning it on and off, mounted and not mounted over the weekend and it didn't seem to make any difference. It is in the car I drive most of the time with the moon roof and all usually works perfectly. When the signals are strong I can move the GPSr's around in the car with little affect. I enjoyed the response about the CD player causing interference, but I haven't been able to identify anything in the cars that is causing the problem. I am wondering if the satellite controllers are reducing the transmit power on the birds at times to charge the batteries or for maintenance purposes. Does anyone know of plans for new satellites to replace the old ones? I will continue to monitor performance and will report back if anything is identified locally causing the issue.
  12. I'm posting this on Monday night after the Memorial Day weekend and have experienced weak satellite signals here in San Antonio, TX, for the past few days and wondering if anyone else has. I have three Magellan GPSr's and one Garmin GPSr and all are getting weak satellite signals in my cars. Outside the car I get seemingly normal signals with up to 13 satellites, but inside either of my cars the signals drop to unusable levels. I have checked all the Magellans (2 Explorist 600's and 1 Explorist 500) with secret menu # 3 to confirm reception of WAAS Sats 135 and 138. Out of the car they show accuracy as low as 10 feet with WAAS, but as I place them inside the car on the windshield mount, they all loose lock and sit there trying to lock on the weak signals. The Garmin is a 60CSX and it maintains lock inside the car, but drops to 3 or 4 sats and accuracy goes to 70 to 100 feet. The Garmin has WAAS enabled, but I wasn't sure how to check it further. I have used all of these GPSr's in the same two cars for over a year now with very successful results with good strong signals. One of the cars has a moon roof and I can usually use the GPSr anywhere in that car with no noticeable loss of signal strength. The weather here has been blue skies with a few white clouds, but nothing that should be blocking the satellite signals. There have been no changes to the cars or items mounted on the dash or windshield and no I didn't take the car and get the glass tinted. I even cleaned the windshield really well thinking there may be a coating of something that had gotten on the glass that was blocking the signals. No change after cleaning. Has anyone else noticed the weak satellite signals for the past few days or have any suggestions as to what may be causing my problem?
  13. I just purchased a new Explorist 600 that had 5.1.67 firmware dated Sept 8, 2005. Thats even older than 5.2.03 by a few months. Looks like this one has been in the box for while. Secret menu #3 confirmed it was looking for old Sats 122 and 134. I didn't see 5.1.67 mentioned in this thread, but based on the theory that the new firmware needs to be newer by date, I decided to try going directly to 5.2.57. I downloaded the file from: http://www.nextdestination.com.au/Pages/Do...aspx?BrandId=13 as mentioned earlier in this thread and loaded it. All went perfectly and after the upgrade I now have WAAS in the display and secret menu #3 confirms I'm looking for sats 135 and 138. I mostly wanted to pass this along for any one with the 5.1.67 firmware to be aware that they can go directly to 5.2.57 without first loading 5.2.03. Also, just to confirm, my unit has a 118 SN with the green circuit board. None of the other existing files were lost or changed. The base map remaind NA 1.12 as it had been. I had made a copy of it just in case. I also have a 500 and a 600 with 2.03, which I have had and used for about 18 months now. Both of them have WAAS active on the correct 135 and 138 birds, so I think I will leave them as they are for now unless I decide I just have to have some of the new screens that come with 2.57. Thanks to all for the great information in this thread!
  14. I have used my Explorist 600 for almost two years now and have noticed recently that sometimes when doing a GoTo to a geocache, that it takes me to the wrong location. Its always close, no more than 50 to 100 feet off, but when it seems it is leading me astray I can re-do the GoTo and then it points correctly to GZ. It usually works fine, but this happens about once or twice during a day of caching. Has anyone else noticed that problem and have any suggestions? It has the latest North American firmware 2.03 installed. Thanks
  15. You might try this. From the Map Page press Menu / Map Setup. Then push the direction control stick to the right to move the highlight from the Format tab to the Display tab. Then scroll the cursor down and be sure "Geocache Icons" is checked. If it is not, the geocache icons will not display even with the file active. Once checked, escape out and see if that made any difference. If it is already checked, try unchecking it, then escape out and then go back in and check it again. Then escape out. Hope this helps. PS: You can also uncheck "Geocache Names" and it helps with the screen clutter. The icons will still display. Its a personal choice, but wanted to pass that on also. Good luck!
  16. I know this is a Triton thread, but I would like to hear from some one that has experience using the Explorist 600 or even 500 that now has a Triton and compare the two. Yes, I understand the high end models have a light, a camera, a recorder, and touch screens, but I'm talking about the GPS function. So far I just hear the Tritons are difficult to use, hard to interface to the PC, and need a firmware upgrade. Tell me what would be gained (gained means positive, not major headaches that I have read about for 11 pages of this thread so far) by upgrading to a Triton over my Explorist 600 that works great, comes right up on the PC when I plug in the USB cable, and always gets me to GZ and most of the time the cache LOL! Thanks!
  17. I have a Magellan Exporist 600 that I have been using for a little over a year now and am very happy with. A couple things I am really hoping to see improved in the Triton are the 200 cache limit per file and the 64 MB Map file limit. Can you tell if those have changed at all from the manual? Did you mention to NewEgg that you were a geocacher and this experience would be posted for thousands of potential customers to read? Fortunately I have never needed to call Magellan support, but I have called other company's support that use off-shore agents with similar unsatisfactory results. I don't know much about the Delorme Earthmate PN-20, but it sounds promising just from the level of support you described. I hope you will post a detailed review of it when you get it. For now I'm pleased with the Exp600 and plan to keep using it, I just hope I never need service or support! I just have to ask Magellan...... "What are you thinking!!!!!"
  18. I hope this is the right topic to post in. I am not new to geocaching, so didn't think this was a "Getting Started" question. I need assistance learning to use a Garmin 60CSX for Geocaching. I am presently using a Magellan 600 and am very familiar with GC Pocket Queries, GSAK, and uploading and using geocaching files to the Magellan. Also, use a Palm 515M for paperless caching. Now enter the Garmin 60CSX. What I think I have figured out so far: I loaded the USB drivers to my PC and using GSAK sent 200 geocaches to the Garmin. They appear in the geocache list as well as the waypoint list. I can see them on the 60CSX map and move the curser to point to one and use the menu to navigate to the cache. I don't really want to street navigate to the cache. I prefer point to point and using the compass pointer for active navigating to the cache instead. Can this be done with the 60CSX? Also, will the compass pointer work if in other than a level position? I have the Magellan in a car mount on the dash where it is easy to see and follow the compass pointer. Next question is regarding the caches loaded to the Garmin GPS. On the Magellan, cache files are created and I can choose which to make active at a given time. It appears that when caches are loaded to the Garmin they all display at the same time up to the limit of the GPS. If that is the case, how do I update the caches without deleting everything loaded and then reloading with new info? I can see that maintaining an ongoing accurate database in GSAK would take care of this, but what a pain to have to manually delete archived caches and add new caches. With the the Magellan I am able to download and work with a new current file that can be easily replace old files without disturbing the other files loaded in the GPS. Another question is about the map color on the Garmin. The Magellan has a nice white background map, while the Garmin has a tan background that makes it hard to read and navigating with the purple line almost impossible to follow the route. Is it possible to change the Map color scheme? Thanks for any assistance!
  19. You can see the location of the main cache waypoint in google maps. Click "View Map" on the cache page and when the map comes up check the "Show Reference Marker" box at the top and the little red baloon will be at the waypoint of the new cache.
  20. I have been shopping for a Garmin 60CSX and the Auto Nav kit, which includes City Navigator. The dealers I have asked say the Auto Nav kits still have CN V8 and that Garmin will give a free upgrade to V2008. I thought I read that Garmin had announced that there would be no free upgrades to V2008. Does anyone know what Garmin's policy is if V8 is purchased now, either alone or in the Nav kit if it we will get a free upgrade? I tried to check on the Garmin Web site and they make you log in with your GPS serial # or maybe its the software serial #, but I don't have either yet. I will hold out for V2008 if there is no free upgade, but hopefully some one knows or has done it that can say for sure. Thanks!
  21. I keep reading the threads about new map features and I am on GC almost every day and haven't seen any changes in the maps. I also don't see a Map-It icon on my pocket query cache list page. Where are you seeing the new map features when they are up? Is it under the regular "View Map" link near the top of the cache page? Are you seeing the Map-It icon on the pocket query cache list today?
  22. I use Geocaching Swiss Army Knife program (GSAK) rather than the cache manager program provided by Magellan. It may work some differently than my process, but some of the steps will be the same. I don't think you can directly load and use the .gpx file, I convert it to a .gs file using GSAK. Below is the process I use. Download the GPX file from Geocaching.com and then load that into GSAK to filter and manage it. When the list is as wanted, then use GSAK to convert it to a .gs file to be ready to load to the Magellan. Connect the Magellan to your computer with the USB/charge cord and turn it on. When it comes up, select "File mode". Your computer should recognize it as a drive and open the window showing a list of folders. Click the Geocache folder to open it. Then copy the .gs file (just created in GSAK) from your PC to the Geocache folder in the Magellan. Once loaded you can change the Magellan mode to "power Only. When the GPS comes back up to normal, press Menu and select Preferences/Active Setup/Geocache. (I hope I have the sequence all right since I am doing this from memory). It will ask you Select file or Geocache file off -- click "Select file". Then if you have an SD card in the GPS it will ask: internal or SD card. Select the one you want. That should bring you to the list of cache files, including the one you just loaded. Select the file you want and then begin escaping out of the menus. When you get back to the map the caches should be showing on it in their locations. If you place the curser on one of the caches and click, it will give you some information on the cache. It does show the hint, but cuts it off at about 50 characters, which it can be much longer. You really need a Palm or Pocket PC for the detailed cache info to be really paperless. You certainly can download the .gs file directly from GSAK to the GPS Geocache folder, but I do the extra step to keep a copy of the file. Good luck, it sounds like a lot, but it goes quickly after you do it a few times.
  23. I found a list on the Garmin web site of authorized online Garmin dealers. They list about 60 dealers, with several selling at discount prices. I went through many of them searching for a 60CSX and the auto navigation kit with City Navigator. The best deal I found for both from the same web site was from GPS Discount Inc. They didn't have the best price on the GPSr, but they had a special Navigation kit with the suction cup windshield mount, which is what I want, for $120. The kit includes City Navigator V8, the suction cup windshield car mount, and the car cord. Their price on the GPSr is $359. Also free shipping. As I said, not the absolute best price on the GPSr, but close, and the Nav Kit blows away anyone else's price that I found and free shipping closes the deal. And of course being an authorized Garmin dealer seals it. Here's the link to the online dealers list on the Garmin site: http://www8.garmin.com/dealers/online.html If anyone knows of a better deal on the above listed equipment please let us know. Yes, I know CN V9 is on the horizon, but I called Garmin today and they aren't making any promises. If anyone has the exact release date please let us know that too. The best I have found is "maybe in the next couple months", which means it could be a year from now. My Magellan 600 is still working great, so I can wait a month or two. If anyone has inside info on the release date please pass it on. Does anyone want to talk me out of getting the 60CSX over the Magellan 600? I will say the Magellan is a great GPSr. I like everything about it except that it only handles 200 caches from a single pocket query whereas the 60CSX will handle 1000. Any comment on the comparison of the two would be welcome. Thanks
  24. Since your Vista CX is new, it is certainly possible that it is off. Be sure you turn it on for a good period of time before getting to the cache to be sure it is locked in and at its best accuracy. I have seen days when it seemed my GPSr was off and other days it is right on. You also need to consider where the caches were located. If they were under trees or next to a cliff or other tall objects, it is possible the satellite signals were being reflected causing you to get erroneous readings. I would recommend going back to some caches you have already found and compare the coords on them with what you are showing. Also, if you can, do a side by side comparison with some other GPS units. I used to use a Vista C and found when the batteries were low that the accuracy seemed to be off. Put in some good fresh batteries before you make further checks.
  25. Thanks to everyone who has responded so far. I think we are all in agreement that Garmin does not authorize online auctions sales. It is probably taking place, but as someone said, it may be under a different name than what your sales receipt may have on it. Bottom line is you are taking a chance buying one from an auction that it may not have Garmin warranty on it. Now if we can please address the second part of my question. What about buying from dealers with their own web sites. I have read many posts and looked at many web sites that seem to be very legit though they are selling at reduced prices ~$340 to $370 for a 60CSX shipped to my door. That's a great price, but if I need service will it qualify for warranty? I know many people have purchased units from these web sites with no issue, but the question is, have you needed to send it for warranty service. Has anyone been refused warranty service by Garmin because they said it wasn't purchased from an authorized dealer? Thanks again!
