  9. Time for me to be heading "up the wooden hill" too......but have been reading up on a little bit of Dorset folklore (love anything to do with myths and magic) So folks, did you know that......... A mischievous goblin colt with flaming red eyes called the "Colepexy", is said to roam the Dorset Downs. He enjoys nothing more than to mislead domesticated horses and travellers, but his favourite prank is luring unsuspecting people to ride him, and once mounted he takes them on a wild ride across the wettest and thorniest country before eventually throwing them into a ditch or stream. Dorset people often call Belemnites, (the bullet shaped fossils found along the beach), "Colepexies Fingers"... and fossil sea urchins (echini), "Colepexies-Heads". So next time you're in the lovely Dorset countryside, watch out for the Colepexy! Thanks to Dorsetgal & GeoDog really enjoyed this cointest. PS...love that picture of "Corfe Castle" in the previous post........just how magical looking is that!
  10. The English landscape painter "John Constable" used to stay at Osmington, a small village on the eastern side of Weymouth. He was a regular visitor over a number of years being a good friend of the Rector. He also married Mary Bicknell from Osmington and spent his honeymoon there in 1816. John Constable painted many famous paintings during his visits to the area including "Bowleaze Cove" (can be viewed at the National Gallery), "Portland Bill" and "Osmington Village". Osmington has a white horse cut into the hillside nearby. This horse is unique in carrying a rider....King George III, the horse is elegant and large 280' long and 323' high.
  11. Ditto lol.........time to get out that violin again!!
  12. Dorset was the home of T.E. Lawrence, aka Lawrence of Arabia. His home, "Clouds Hill" (now owned by the National Trust) is situated near Wareham. At the age of 46 he was killed in a motorbike accident, very near to his cottage. He is buried in the churchyard at Moreton. The "Church of St Nicholas and St Magnus" at Moreton is famous not only for being the burial place of T.E.Lawrence. After being bombed in WW2 it was rebuilt, but the stained glass window panels were never replaced. In their place a beautiful set of engraved glass windows were created by Sir Laurence Whistler. Not only are the windows themselves world famous and a sight to see in their own right but the transformation of the inside into a place of light and space is magical.
  13. Hope Caesar is well on the road to recovery........ Dorset blue vinney (frequently spelled "vinny") is a traditional blue cheese made in Dorset, England, from skimmed cows' milk. It is a hard, crumbly cheese. "Vinney" is a local Dorset term related to the obsolete word "vinew", which means to become mouldy. Another explanation has it that "vinny" is a corruption of "veiny", referring to the blue veins running throughout the cheese. While the cheese was a common farmhouse cheese in Dorset for hundreds of years, production dried up around 1960 and the cheese became extinct. However, in the 1980s Woodbridge Farm in Dorset revived the old recipe, and it is now producing the cheese again. Thanks for another great cointest!!
  14. It tells you how to contact Groundspeak if you've lost your TB code here: http://www.geocaching.com/track/travelbugfaq.aspx
  15. Yes definitely a lime hawk .....I had a few emerge from their pupae about a month ago that had been overwintering in our loft (captive-bred). Beautiful moths and the caterpillars are pretty special too (see link below). http://ukmoths.org.uk/show.php?id=1226
  16. One of our worst days was down in the lakes a couple of months ago. We started off the morning with two DNFs in torrential rain. Next we went on to do fairly hard slog up a hill with paths that kept going back on themselves. Arrived at the top only to find that there was a car park about 300ft away from GZ LOL.......couldn't believe how we missed the road going up to it, I think I must have turned the air blue!! Definitely wasn't the best of days, kept on going though but the mood wasn't great .
  17. Sounds as though these were very popular indeed........and it's no wonder, they look stunning and beautifully made.
  18. Absolutely beautiful coin, love the opal-like look of the dove and how it sparkles, congratulations on this latest addition to your collection........and well done to the mystery giver for such a lovely gesture.
  19. Really sorry to hear about Caesar, he couldn't have a better nurse by the sound of it though.......poor wee man. This is a great idea, really enjoying all the pics.........especially seeing some very different types of animals from those that we get here in the UK!!!! The pic below is of one of the red squirrels that we saw when we were at the "Bloomin' marvellous" cache in Cumbria (March) this year. We had read the cache description and it mentioned red squirrels. We had actually drove away from the cache and I said to Andy, lets go back at just sit for a while.......so we did and boy were we rewarded!! I honestly never wanted to leave, got very little caching done that afternoon lol......just happy to sit quietly and watch. We went back another day and saw them again......and spoke to a really nice woman who goes along that road regularly to feed them. It was without a doubt one of the most memorable caches we've done......
  20. According to a book called "101 Uses for Stinging Nettles", there seems to be no end to their uses lol! Have to say though that some of the medicinal uses listed there are a bit of an eye opener....nettles for haemorrhoids!!
