  1. I've seen several posts about letting SC know geocachers wouldn't be spending money in their state if this law passes (I even wrote the tourism department). If my somewhat partial knowledge on SC tourism is correct - they don't care. I'm basing that statement on the conflict between minority groups like the NAACP vs the State of SC on the matter of flying/removing the Confederate flag from the state house. SC didn't remove it and groups like the NAACP said they were boycotting SC. I "believe" the official boycott is still in effect (not 100% sure). I do remember seeing 100s of protestors clogging up interstate rest stops when this was in full force. My overall point is some people might not travel to SC to spend their money, but probably not enough to cause SC any concern. If well organized (and funded) groups like the NAACP can't get SC to change their mind, a few hundred geocachers aren't likely going to be able to do it (in terms of financial loss) E
  2. Another question for Philly cachers. Next month I'll be on a business trip and staying out near the airport (Bartram Ave). While I'm there I would like to grab a cache in NJ & DE to add to my found states list. How practical is it to get to DE and back in the evening (I'll have my own car). I'm assuming NJ is somewhat easier. Thanks, Eswau
  3. The Senate could amend the bill. They amend and then send it back to the House. Then would the whole process start over?
  4. Would the addition of far fetched admendments make this bill less likely to make it through the senate or would they be allowed to alter the bill there?
  5. Yes, thanks. I hitting 11 or 12 new states on a trip from NC to ME and this is going to be the highlight.
  6. Next month, I'll be travelling from NC to Philly for a business trip. I figure I have to hit the Project APE cache in Maryland on my way up. I'm just not sure of the best way to do it. We'll be travelling I81 and spending the night somewhere in the general area. I'll be travelling with my wife (not a cacher) and a 2 & 3 year old. So I guess I have two questions - (1) With trying to avoid as much DC traffic as I can, where should I stay between I81 and the cache? (2) Would you recommend going out early in the morning, finding the cache and returning to the hotel before checkout, or check out of the hotel go to the cache site and leave the family in the car - maybe in otherwords, how long does it take to find the cache once I get to the parking spot? Any other tips or suggestions? Thanks, Eswau
  7. I've been before, however probably 25 years ago. Sorry, can't help with the caches but I can tell you to expect some very cold water Have fun- E
  8. I just sent an email to the Dept of Tourism expressing my views on this matter. The first time in my 40 years I've ever written a letter in the name of politics. I would be interested in supporting (financially) politicians that do support our cause. I'm assuming out of state contributions are legal? E
  9. Thanks for the help - I think I'll go the dbl sided tape route. E
  10. This has probably already been discussed somewhere on pages 1-12 of this forum, but who should out of staters contact to oppose this bill? I'm up in NC (Charlotte) and for the past two years my birthday present has been a weekend SC geocaching trip by myself (ie - no kids) to SC. I was also the first person to place a KTB cache outside of SC - which I have recently renamed. The last time I counted, I had more finds in SC than NC. Thanks, Eswau
  11. My local store only sells them in packs of 3 and everywhere I find them online ends up being $7-8 after shipping charges. Does anyone have on they didn't use that they would be willing to part with for a few bucks? Or does anyone know where I can order one with out paying so much for shipping? Thanks, E
  12. I had good luck with the ones I bought on eBay.
  13. I'm still waiting on the license tags for cars that don't require two state plates. There was some talk a year ago about it HERE
  14. I think you've answered your own questions with your own advice. Just be aware of your surroundings, don't stick your hand where you can't see and use common sense. I wish I was going on a caching trip to Florida........... E
  15. Like the people at Playboy surf the web. Something to think about.... Do their internet filters block sites like CNN.com and Weather.com E
  16. I've done many cemetery caches and yet to hear a single complaint from any of the residents.
  17. I'm not much into political science, but isn't this an awlful lot of names on a bill like this? I thought bills usually had 2 or 3 authors/sponsers.
  18. We have a cache around here that was listed pre-benchmark days that you had to find a benchmark to claim a find. We still have people that claim the cache everytime they find a benchmark. I believe the term is "double dipping" E
  19. With ~10 caches out there, the first time I've felt the need to post to this forum: Although we did not find the actual cache (and we were filthy and rusty before we gave up) we consider this one found as we knew we were in the right place by the clue Edited --> Cacher has since changed their log to a DNF. E
  20. OUCH! However, IMHO, this one would be a hard one to fight against due to the places it lists. How can we say that caches should be allowed in those places? I didn't know a state had jurisdiction over cemeteries and am sort of surprised to see that listed, but state owned historical property and archeological areas are going to be hard to convince anyone that we should be allowed to place a Geocache. Probably the worse thing about this is once SC gets this law passed, who is to say what else gets put on the forbidden list, or what other states do the same. I'm in NC and the state has banned caches in their parks for quite awhile (they're actually not banned, but require something like a $120 permit per year to hide one - might as well be banned and quit kidding themselves). One of the drawbacks due to the popularity of the "sport"
  21. This week, I'd rather do the lamest cache in St Pete, than the best one up here in NC E
  22. Eagle Scout '83 Troop 313, Gastonia, NC Vigil Honor Member of Eswau Huppeday Lodge #560 (where my Geocaching name comes from) On the books as a Troop Committee member, but not very active now.
  23. Here I go ASSuming again, but I wonder if MsAnner is talking about one of these 1/2 day gambling cruises. We have a few next door in SC. Small businesses, that take you just over the line to international waters and you gamble for a few hours then return the same day. Might have been the first time they had experienced someone with a GPS. Maybe not- E
  24. Just out of jealous curiosity - how many days will you be spending on this trip? E
  25. Not including some great multi's - A few of my favorites in Columbia SC. If you had time you could also hit Sesqui State Park and do several (at least 8 would be my guess). I don't live in Columbia, so maybe someone who does - or has found more there than me will give you some more advice.
