  1. I use a gramin GPS V in my jeep cherokee sport 4door. I have it mounted using a RAM mount above my rear view mirror. It is perfect in size and function. True the memory is slightly limited but I still have a great deal of northern NY loaded into it. abd that is all I need on a given day. Also if you know where you are going you can load the exact route into it ahead of time and the map memory isn't an issue. However since this unit it a handheld as well the screen is not huge. FOr me it is ideal when i check my rear view mirror i check the GPS as well havent any problems like this. But if you are mountingn it farther away maybe the StreetPilot is a better idea.

  2. I got mine about two years ago. I am a junior in college now attending the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse,NY. I got my ham license because of an interest from a while ago. It was pretty easy to get the first license and picking up a 2 meter radio was just as expensive as a getting a good FRS radio. However it opened a realm of communications that is far more entertaining and much more exciting. I have many friends here on the Syracuse repeaters and anywhere I go people are always happy to have a conversation, recommend dining in the area, provide help, or just share the time as you travel from A-B. While I am out caching I take along my HT and chat with Hams as I hike my way through the woods. Some people say a cell phone can do this. Well a ham radio has a certain aspect of adventure and more control. I was up at 3900ft in the Catskills and my cell phone was incapable of making a phone call, I tried. However my 2m radio on 1 watt was able to strike up a repeater loud and clear.... If not for any reason, the ham radio is fun. The people are nice and they have a wealth of information to share. Today’s language has become very crass and loaded with offensive words... It is a calming and relaxing experience to talk with a few hams from around the world, politely, simply and about anything that may strike your fancy. Plain and simple... I love it and it is a great way to meet new people and share interests

  3. Thanks Morseman, the reply is very helpfull. Gives me a good point to start lookin at stuff. I will look into that "Tiny Track" for my car. That is where my greatest interest lies is being able to have my vehicle appear on a map so that people can see where I am. I always thought that would be kinda cool.

  4. I am looking to get whatever is needed together to set up APRS both in my house and In my car. Currently I have in my car an Icom-207H, In my house I have an Azden 7000H (this is soon to be sold) and I have a Yaesu/Vertex VX 150 HT 2M. I know I am gonna need a TNC and software... but I am not sure what to get or what I actually need to have a complete setup. I am looking for some help on getting myself set up. If you could give me suggestions as to what I need, or should get, and maybe (if you currently do APRS) list what you use and how it works. Any and all information is greatly appreciated! Thanks a Lot!

  5. OOPS! Hit post now before i really wanted to. Anyhow, the theory goes that the happy cacher who find R2D2 will log him on the wheresgeorge.com system, and after awhile he will get some distance on him. It's worked adequately well so far, and is certainly a very cheap way to do things. Tell me wwhat you think!

You can visit the wheresgeorge page for R2D2 at:

Or you can visit the little hompage i set up for him at:

Thanks for responding, positively or otherwise!

  6. I may get a lot of flak for this from MANY people, but here is what I have done: Merged a wheresgeorge.com dollar bill serial number with a travel bug sort of feature.

This is how I did it: My little R2D2 action figure has a tag attached to him explaining wheresgeorge.com and how it tracks bills. On the back it has all the relevant information (serial #, year, denomination) that is required for it to be logged.

  7. On a whim, Dave of caching team ESFKids went out and did a quick sketch of a dog. It can be seen on the GPSdrawing site. Since then I've learned a lot about the way my little eTrex gathers and stored tracklog points, and my next drawing should be much better. Tell me what you think!

Oh, and I love the idea of having a multicache draw something out. That would certainly add a new element to the whole experience, and be great authentication.
