  1. Here's the one we did. Not only was it fun to do, but it's fun to read the logs......... Mission Impossible Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  2. Kids want to feel like their parents sometimes. Our kids weren't too crazy about hiking when we got them started a few years ago. We decided to get them all their very own fanny packs. Inside the packs we put a flashlight, a whistle (in case they got lost) and one of those light sticks in case they got lost and it got dark. Our kids are all in Scouts, so we also hooked them up with compasses. When we packed our lunch, they were all in charge of carrying their own food. They had to carry their snacks or sandwiches in their packs. Some of the fanny packs out there are too big for kids, we had to modify one to fit a skinny butt, but it's do-able. Keep it relatively short and at a slow pace. Our youngest when he was 5.......after about 1/4 mile, would throw himself down and declare that he couldn't go any farther. Which usually meant he wanted to go back home to play video games. But we kept him at it, and he did survive.......contrary to his belief. he he he! 3. Yep, we've found that finding a parking place is 1/2 the fun. Check out the All Alonecache. We spent a couple of hours driving nearly all the way around it. We posted a picture of our bread crumb trail too. Turned out to be one of the best caches we've ever found. We've spent lots of time driving around unfamiliar neighborhoods trying to find a parking lot to a park the car. It can be frustrating, and is not gas tank friendly, but actually ads excitement to the hunt. Full gas tank, fresh batteries and you're off for day of fun!!! 4. Our state park does controlled burns every year, but in relatively small sections. I believe they only do the burns in prairie areas though......never in the woods where most caches are hidden. I imagine as long as you have permission to hide and work closely with the managers, they could alert you before they do a burn in that section of the park? 5. It sounds to me like the cell phone is what ruined your day.............. I don't own a cell phone. I refuse to. I like not being available 24/7. It allows me to do things I enjoy without interuption........like Geocaching Ring ring......."We're not available right now, please leave a message and we'll get back to you". 6. Cool idea! Special glass paint can be purchased at craft stores so that the logo will stay on after being washed. Another idea would be the glass etching stuff also sold at craft stores. From what I've seen on TV, it's very easy to use. Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  7. Been there, done that! We've done 43 caches....out of all of those, our GPS took us to the exact cache location maybe 2 times. The farthest that we found a cache from where the coords took us was 40 feet. We spent an entire hour looking for that one. But it was also a very good hide. With experience, you'll know what to look for. Difficulty rating is also in the eye of the beholder. I've seen some 1's that were not easy to find.......... Look in tree stumps, behind rocks and don't forget to look up every now and then. Once you find your first........you're hooked to the core. 8. We've thought about doing the hollowed out log too, kinda neat to see one done though....I don't think dowels would work though. With temperature and humidity changes, the wood will swell and make it difficult to get on and off. We were going to use hinges on ours, then re-cover the log with bark so the lid could not be distinquished from the bottom........ Let us know how it works out! Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  9. It took some talking to get my husband to finally get one. He wanted one himself, just didn't want to spend the money on it. My brother bought one, and I showed him the geocache.com site........told him it was a good way to play with his new toy...........we went to our first cache. And my husband bought his new GPS on the way home. Geocaches are like potatoe chips......... Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  10. I can certainly understand the expense involved in running a website this large, and the more geocachers that start up, the more people will be required to run the site. I don't mind a price increase because of it, but do think that members should start getting some major incentives for being members. I'm with others right now in that I don't really use the GPX/pocket query stuff......I don't know how actually. It seems to me it would be only fair that the folks willing to pay the membership should have more benefits that are obvious to everyone. IE: every new cache would be a members only until after the first find.......then it would open up to eveyrone? This would not only increase memberships, but would also help take some of the expense off those willing to pay for memberships......... Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  11. Make it a members only.........We've only got one members only in our area, and it's what encouraged us to pay our $30. It helps to get folks to pay their $30, and also gives those that have already paid theirs a little advantage.......... Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  12. Here is Colorado's Q & A on BLM land..... Bureau of Land Management-Colorado Here's a short clip from this site. Q. What are the right of the public to cross private lands to access public land? The public may cross private lands to access public lands only when a public road or right-of-way (easement) for public access exists across the private lands. In the absence of such a right-of-way, the public has no right to cross private lands without first obtaining permission from the landowner. The landowner is under no obligation to grant such permission. Q. What are the State of Colorado's trespass laws? According to Colorado State Law, landowner permission is required prior to entering or crossing private property, except while traveling on public roadways. Two sections of the Colorado Revised Statutes (CRS) apply to trespassing: 1) CRS 18-4-504 relates to "Third Degree Trespass", which constitutes either a petty offense, misdemeanor, or felony depending upon the classification of the property involved, and the circumstances of the trespass. This statute requires a Court Appearance. Upon conviction, fines can range from $50 to $750 and can include a sentence in county jail. (private property also does not necessarily have to be posted in order for trespass laws to be enforced) 2) CRS 33-6-116 relates to trespass while engages in the act of hunting. The penalty for violating this statue is a fine of $137 and possible jail time. In addition, 20 hunting license "Points" are assessed (when 20 or more "Points" are accumulated during a 5 year period, the state Wildlife Commission may suspend your hunting and fishing privileges for up to 5 years). Some other pertinent State Laws: CRS 33-6-125 forbids loaded firearms in motor vehicles. Penalty is $68 fine plus 15 points. CRS 33-6-123 forbids hunting while under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances. Penalty is a Court Summons and 20 points. CRS 33-6-119 (2) regards waste of edible portions of wildlife. For big game, the penalty is a $411 fine and 15 points. CRS 33-6-126 forbids shooting from, or releasing an arrow from or across a public road. Fine is $68 and 5 points. I was busted for trespassing in Colorado when I was 16 years old. It was a misdemeaner with a $60 fine and a court appearance. By the way.......if you're gonna go cruising on West Colfax, don't pull over into a parking lot to talk to anyone. 13. Here's our favorite so far......... Mission Impossible-Minnesota Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  14. We just bought the CHM24 model.........The small wall unit that charges 4 batteries at a time. We have it set on Ni-MH and just slide the batteries in according to the diagram imprented inside the place where you put the batteries..........plug it in and let it charge. Did you have anything specific you were wondering about? Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  15. Odds of something happening are higher by staying home. We have 3 boys ages 9-15. Our friends all joke around that we have our own coffee cups at the emergency room. broken collar bones from bike riding, broken wrists from roller blading, stitches above eye from playing hockey with rocks, stitches across forehead from jumping from top of couch then landing on your butt on the cushions and seeing how far it will propel you across the room. Not to mention football injuries....blah blah blah. Welcome to the world of boys! Number of accidents we've had so far in the woods?......zero! Chances are, if your wife loves to hike, she'll be hooked on the first one. Geocaching is like Heroine.......try it once and you're a junky. Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  16. This topic was just touched on in the last day or two......Here's the link......... Welcome to geocaching! Have fun!!! Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  17. I've always wondered actually if our geo-magnet is worthy of trading. Maybe 15Tango can help me out since it sounds like he has one on his fridge. I made them because I read in the forum that signature items were well received, and thought it would be a neat thing to put on the fridge or on your computer at work. They're very inexpensive to make, which was good for us because we're a family of 5 on a budget, and don't have a lot left over to invest in expensive trade items. Anyway, i recently checked the logs of the caches that we've been to, and noticed that only a couple of the magnets have been taken.........or at least logged that they were taken. I guess I'm wondering if they're Ok, or are they just geo-junk? I think it would be fun to collect a bunch of geocache magnets, but that's just me........... Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  18. A lot of State Park managers work on Saturday. In fact in our area, that's the only day you can get ahold of ours. Check local maps too. There are tons of hidden county parks and city parks that one would never know were there.......... Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  19. We've been to some REALLY cool parks that we never would have found had it not been for Geocaching. Alot of times I'll put in our log that we "loved this park and will definitely be back". But we never have.........There's too many more caches out there to find. So we just need to learn to spend more time at the park that we're at at the time. Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  20. It's just a magnet we print up on the printer on business cards and buy the business card sized magnets at Walmart......I think they're 10 magnets for $2.50? Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  21. I have to agree with nincehelser. When I first started reading the message boards, I couldn't figure out why everyone was complaining about cache contents depleting and at the same time telling people to trade up. Then I thought the term was being used as a joke.....As in "always trade up " Now I realize that it means to leave more than what I take. Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  22. Has anyone ever done a geocache service project other than trash out events? I know when my son was calling around for Eagle project ideas, he contacted the local state park and they suggested helping with clearing trails or making new trail markers. Here in Wisconsin, they're still trying to complete the Ice Age Trail across the state....Is this something anyone has done, or is it something anyone would be interested in? Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  23. I guess I would wait until the first 5 or so people have logged it and then go ahead and log it myself. I agree with the idea that if you can't get credit for the hide, you might as well get a credit for a find. I may be irritated easier than most, but I would hate having it hang out on my to-do list forever. Especially if one of my goals is to find every cache on the first search page............ Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  24. Hmmm, looks like the polls aren't working for me this morning. But I have to go with the "depends" point of view. If we worked hard to get there and the hike was more than a 1/2 mile, we'll search indefinitely. It also depends on the cache owner's tone on the cache page as well. We love a good challenge. So when the cache owner challenges us by saying something like "if you can find it" or "a mean spirited multi-cache, are you up for it?".........well, it's on! Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  25. Here's one in Minnesota that I really like. It's a locationless cache, which some aren't crazy about, but it's a great idea I think. The Trashy Cache Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
