  1. We didn't like posting "did not finds" in the past. But I've realized that it helps the cache owner keep track of whats happening with the cache and that maybe it's time for a maintenance visit. Just last weekend we tried to find one that had just been found a few days before. I struggled with posting the no-find, but in the end I went ahead and did it. Within minutes, two other people posted a no-find on the cache. Indicating to me that the cache is probably missing, since those that found it before said that it was an easy find. We will spend up to 45 minutes trying to find a cache. So if we havnt found it, its either missing, or it's a tough one.
  2. Thanks guys. They don't really make that clear, and when I emailed customer service, they just told me they couldn't do it. Would be nice if a "gift membership" was an option. Maybe something to think about? As far as merchandise goes though, it would be nice to be able to get gift certificates. Thanks again!
  3. I'm currently organizing a geocaching event for the Prescott Daze Festival in Prescott Wisconsin. I need to come up with some good prizes, and I have a little bit of a budget. I thought that a free one year membership to geocache.com would be a really good gift. ( One that I would really like), but That's not possible with Groundspeak. You have to have a name and address etc. to register for a one year membership. I thought that was kind of a bummer, but I didn't give up. I figured I would get some $25.00 gift certificates for the Geocaching.com store. Unfortunately, they cannot provide paper or electronic gift certificates without a name or what not. I'm just thinking that with all of the new small town festivals that are now featuring geocaching and with all of the events with prizes involved. Perhaps Groundspeak can come up with a credit card type gift card or an email gift certificate with a code number or something? I want to support Groundspeak and actually promote them at our geocaching event, but it's getting kinda tough. Any ideas? Seems like they are losing out on a little profit here............ Thanks much!!!!
  4. Geocaching is allowed in Wisconsin state parks. Take a look and see what you can find........ Have a fun vacation!
  5. I need to organize a geocaching event for our Prescott Daze festival in September. I have a few questions as I don't want to offend anyone by doing things the "wrong" way. I will need 7 caches for this event.....Each cache having a word in it. The players collect the 7 words that will form one famous quote. Then enter their sheet with their names on it for a drawing of prizes. Here's my questions...... It's a small town that already has 6 geocaches. Ideally I'd like to make them permanent caches, but don't want to inundate the town with too many caches. Also, the folks that run the Prescott Daze festival want to make the geocaching thing an annual event. thus adding more and more caches each year. Is it ok to have an event with non-permanent caches? Would this upset anyone or prevent them from coming out to do it? I was planning on having a Geocaching 101 type of session for those that are just beginning. But also wanted to have a meet and great at one of the coffee shops in town. So would I make the meet and greet an event cache that they actually could log on geocache.com? I've never been to an event cache, so don't really know much about them..... Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
  6. We live in the country in Wisconsin, so we're pulling ticks of the dogs, kids and ourselves every day. They used to bother me, but now they're just a nuisance. For the most part, you get them from walking around in tall grass. Ticks can be fun to play with. They arent ferocious, and won't latch on right away, so take some time to have a little fun with them. A ticks instinct is to climb to the highest point of their host. I'll put one on my hand and hold it up. Once the tick gets to the top, i'll turn my hand over and make him climb again. Over and over until I get bored torturing the little creep. Once i'm done with that, I'll put him on a table and use a pin to flip him over on his back. It's fun to watch the tick correct itself. Try it! After you've had your way with him, throw him in the toilet.
  7. I'm with everyone else here.........there's deeper insecurity issues your wife may be suffering from. Or she may be jealous of the time you dedicate to Geocaching and not to her. I used to be the same way about my husbands fishing. Then he started asking me to go fishing with him. Well, I'm not the biggest fishing fan. I like going out to eat, but he hates that. LOL...............Our compromise? He takes me out for breakfast every time we go fishing. We both win. While your wife may have some deeper issues, you may also want to take a look at how much time you've given to Geocaching and how much to her. A compromise may be in order. It also sounds to me like she's never gone Geocaching with you and doesnt understand what its all about. Perhaps a trip to the woods with a surprise picnic dinner or a dinner out?
  8. Our absolute favorites so far are: Devils Lake.......it's a MUST see Interstate State Park...........fun hiking Amnicon Falls State Park....crowded on the weekends but still a really neat park If visiting any of these parks, I would plan to spend at least a few hours. Devils lake is an entire day.......... Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  9. We have the Geko 201 and the E-trex Venture. We like both alot. The Venture does have more features, although the Geko certainly has enough to keep you a happy geocacher. We recommend the Venture as a first-timers GPS. The Geko is good for a second unit.....for those of us that fight over it. he he he! The only complaint we have about the Geko is the space they give you to name your waypoints. They only give you 5 or 6 spaces to name them. I believe the Venture gives 12 spaces. Which makes a difference if you have one waypoint called "deer park" and "deer lake". The Geko is easier to learn how to use and of course is smaller. 10. Outside Magazine just came out with their 2003 annual buyers guide. It has some great information on hiking boots, including an article about "Leather or Not". In fact, it's available online Gear of the Year They cover everything from boots to tents to GPS's. Our opinion on boots? We stick with the all leather. I have an old pair of Timberlands that have held up for years. I'm ready to replace them, but not because they're worn out........because I'm tired of them. Husband has an old pair of all leather Adidas boots and one of our sons has a pair of Rockport hiking boots and another has Nike. We're all happy with them. We've tried the Nylon boots, but they aren't waterproof, and your feet always get wet......even when just walking through wet grass. Some of us have actually walked through shallow creeks in our leather boots, and our feet stay dry. We treat our boots 2 times a year to a good rub down of Sno-Seal All-Season Leather Protection. 12. Ok, it wouldn't be right if a Cheesehead didn't jump in here and brag about cheesecurds... But they gotta be deep fried and served in a basket. Plus whenever we visit my sister in Michigan, or she visits us, she always hooks us up with a huge jar of pickled bologna. 13. We log them. I know some folks are dead set against locationless, but we like them as an alternative every now and then. Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  14. We found alot of them ranging in size from the small to the huge 3'x 2' size. All $3.99 at the Northern Hydraulics outlet store in Hudson Wisconsin. Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  15. Went to an Australian lingo website.......here's some ideas. Cobber..........good friend Dinki-di......something good from Australia or originating from down under Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.

  17. quote: Does anyone actually play those Geko games? The Rino have some relatively interesting ones (team based) but some of these other games seem to want you to walk aimlessly in circles. I think they missed the point. I tried playing the games once when we first got our Geko, but I played it in the livingroom. Kept running into the furniture. ha ha!. My kids played it once out in the yard, but that was it. Here's the scenerio I'm hoping for....... You finally get that week long camping trip you've been waiting for. You're reclining the best you can in your lawn chair next to the barely smoking fire pit. The tree cover is heavy, but you manage to position your chair so that a small amount of sunshine hits your face. The smell of the pine trees is intoxicating. You're just about to doze off........ when your 9 year old walks up bumps your chair and says........"I'm bored!". I think the Gekos are geared more towards kids. They're easier to use and don't have as many goodies. But the games should come in handy in a boredom crisis.........at least I'm hoping. 18. quote:Skippy, in real life is my 1 1/2 year old Rat Terrier. I had one as a kid and got this Skippy 60 years later. Are Rat Terriers not the coolest dogs ever?!! We have 2 of them. A 7 year old full sized Rat, and a 6 year old miniature Rat. Best dogs we've every had!! Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  19. When you start wondering if every car you see parked on the side of the road is geocachers off in the woods somewhere. Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  20. Whew! Now that Dusty Jacket answered your question, we can get back to the avatar issue.........I vote for Skippy Squirrel Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.

  22. quote: Not only do most "flick a used butt anywhere they feel like", they also seem to litter other material more than nonsmokers, from my observations. Where do you hang out? I have to honestly say that it's a pretty rare occassion that I've actually seen anyone throw somthing out the window of their car or litter. (It obviously happens......I just havn't seen it) But I have to say that I did not notice whether they had a cigarette in their mouth when they did it. It's a stereotype to say that most smokers do this....... As far as taking from the health care system......that gets drained from every direction. Low income or no income people with no insurance is one..........but lets not forget the largest group of folks draining it......attornies and insurance companies. But that's a whole 'nother rant...... Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  23. I wouldn't recommend taking my grocery cart after I've filled it. I despise grocery shopping....so I'm already in a foul mood to begin with. This thread has produced some humorous grocery store-ies though. Back when I first got married, I did my weeks worth of grocery shopping......cart fully loaded I headed out to the car. Opened the back door and proceeded to load all of my groceries into the back seat. Returned my cart to the store and climbed into the drivers seat. My key doesn't work........what the heck!! I worked like crazy trying to get my groceries out of this car and into mine before anyone noticed. ha ha! This car was EXACTLY like mine........it just took a different key..... 24. quote: Smokers and fishermen (other than me) are the biggest slobs on the planet. Ouch! That hurts! I think there's slobs in every group. If i had a penny for every beer can or mountain dew bottle that i've picked up, i'd be able to pay for my geo-gas. And how about those blue Walmart bags. You see those hanging on trees, bushes and fences everywhere. You're not alone Verboten........I trash out my butts too Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.
  25. If you're not looking for a clear one, the new 1 gallon plastic paint jugs that are out would work great! You would have to cut out the spout that they put on the inside of the jug though. I supose if you're really serious about having some manufactured, you could try to find out who manufactures those and see if they can make clear ones......... We have one that we're going to use, but after painting an entire room, I still have about 1 cup worth of paint still in it...........
