  1. I disabled the Mexico cache. It got removed by workers or muggles. My friends went over to check on it only to find the area all disturbed and the cache gone. Rather than try to reposition it nearby I just disabled the cache listing and informed the dnf. In retrospect it was probably not the best spot and I likely won't replace it.

If this is the end of the cache, then it should be archived, not disabled. Disabling is a temporary measure to let folks know you are aware of the problem and plan to fix it.

I don't think there will be an issue with nailing an aluminum plate to a stump or fallen tree but will make sure I place them in such a manner as to be well findable but not 'in your face' so as not to deface anything.

Defacement that is hidden from view is still defacement. Unless you have explicit permission from a party who actually has the authority to give it, you should NEVER nail something to something else as part of a cache hide (IMO).

  2. Logos and related info here. (Make sure you read what you can and can't do with the provided graphics).

Ready made stickers to label caches here. There are other non-Groundspeak versions out there too. Clicking on the images should give you some idea what info you might want to include if you're going to make your own labels.

  3. I already have nice selection of Garmin mounts for my existing etrex units. I've just ordered a 76CSx and want to use it with these same mounts.

I'm trying to avoid buying yet another mount just to get the 'dock' I need for my new 76CSx. If you have an extra that you'd like to sell, I'd be glad to take it off your hands. The part I need is the one on the right in the picture below.

  4. I read on a yahoo group that vibrations can scramble the insides of the gps and kill it. I've been too chicken to try it.

The problem is normally the contacts between the battery pack and the main board. They are not always very snug and the vibration can cause the unit to shut down. It does not hurt the unit, just a PITA. It can be fixed by opening them up and bending the contacts to give more pressure.

I've heard of this, and actually taken steps to remedy it on my Legend, but the reports of a unit being permanently ruined are what prompted my question. I'm hoping those who reported this problem would have thought the try the unit again after the trip was over or they were stopped. I've even seen plans of very convoluted looking mounts with thick rubber inserts to dampen this supposed killer vibration. Maybe the problem is that those folks understand motorcycles better than they understand gps units.

  5. GSAK does not connect to the gc.com site to collect data. Doing so is a violation of the TOU, and is a great way to get your IP banned from the site.

How did you get the data into GSAK in the first place? Hopefully you used Pocket Queries (one of the Premium Member perks) to grab up to 500 at a time. If not, that's definitely the way to get the freshest data in the biggest chunks.

  6. Yup. We have 2 Etrex format GPS and 3 76 series here.

You're happy with the performance of the Garmin mounts with the 76 series? Didn't know if the increased size and weight made any difference in the mount's performance.

BTW, do you use the Garmin mount on your cycle? Have you had any issues with vibration? I read on a yahoo group that vibrations can scramble the insides of the gps and kill it. I've been too chicken to try it.

  7. Absolutely. I live near a state border, so I order the 500 closest to home that I haven't found for each state. I put them both into the same database, then export a separate file for each state, and a third for the 30 caches closest to my home, regardless of which state they're in. Then, if I want to head to a specific area on a given day, I pick the list out right from GSAK and make the CacheMate file for that particular day (similar to what you originally described).

Since my queries only include caches that I haven't found, the one's that I log drop off, and are replaced by different caches, always giving me a base of 1000 caches to work with.

There are many different ways to filter and sort data within GSAK. I would suggest you visit the GSAK support forum for specific advice if you need further assistance setting things up.

  8. off topic but you might try Firefox browser and simply right click the links you want and select "open in new tab".

I'm already a Firefox convert, but the 'map room' uses a drop down list instead of hot links for the various maps, and the list items don't respond with that option when right-clicked.

As another aside, if you have a mouse with a scroll wheel, clicking on links with it will automatically open them in a new tab, bypassing the need to right-click/select that option from the list.

  9. As a map geek, I like to look at a variety of weather maps from weather.com. Since I can only view one map at a time, I have to keep clicking back and forth to see everything I want to see.

I created my own solution to this dilemma by whipping up some very simply HTML to show all of the maps that interest me on a single page. Now, I just launch that page instead of bouncing around their 'map room' page.

Perhaps a similar solution would work for your situation.

  10. Try here to edit your stat bar.

As far as the searches go, I use Google, and limit the google search to this site. For your original question I might have tried something like "stat bar" site:forums.Groundspeak.com.

  11. As for a contact for cachers to use, on the bottom of almost every cache page is a post by the reviewer. As with all posts to cache pages you can contact the poster through the link that is their name.

    Above emphasis added by me.

While the rate of cache hiding is definitely increasing as time goes on, I think it's probably an overstatement to say this applies to 'almost every' cache. I'd be very surprised if half of the currently active caches have this info, and would guess that maybe a third of them have this info.

  12. I have two caches that were renewed in Michaux State Forest. I e-mailed and asked if renewal was possible, offering to visit the cache site with a Forester if they wished, to demonstrated that the impact on my caches sites was non-existent. Ultimately, that was not required.

I do believe that the PNDI searches were done again to check for possible new conflicts. Both caches were renewed with little difficulty other than a long wait (8 weeks) for everything to be official. I had a verbal ok to keep the caches active during that time, since it was believed that no conflicts would arise.

  13. Cache hunters can already email reviewers through the reviewers profile.

There are tens of thousands of caches that were published prior to the creation of the "Published" log type. For these caches, it can be difficult to know who approved them, or who the reviewer for that area is.

  14. Problem with that is you have to 'write' in the 6 digit code of every one, and I'm a little picky when it comes to finding a cache (with difficulty and stuff). I'd like a list ON THE PALM in closest order so I can find one without ever looking at the gps. It's a plam M125, perhaps I need a faster one like the Tungsten?

I'm going to make a couple of assumptions again (yeah, I know what can happen there :anibad: ) and offer some more advice based on those assumptions. Again, please correct me if I'm off base.

From the quote above, it sounds like your caches are listed in CacheMate by their GCxxxx(x) number, which (for most of us) makes it difficult to scroll down the list and find a specific listing, thus the need for you to do a 'find' and write in the 6-digit code to get what you want.

You didn't mention how your converting the data for your pda. There are third party tools that let you tweak this info, making it easier to use. I use a program called GSAK. With it, I use "Smart Names" to re-name my waypoints for both my gps and pda. For the cache "Devil's Racecourse", I see "DevilsRace" on my gps and pda, instead of "GC1531". The CacheMate list sorts alphabetically, so after my gps tells me what cache is closest, it's very easy so zip down the list and find the correct listing. Also, writing any letter on the grafitti pad will jump you to that part of the list.

A newer pda will likely do any task faster than the one you have, but the suggestions I've made may appeal to you whether you decide to upgrade your pda or not.

  15. **edited to change incorrectly used 'rail mount' term in this post (still incorrectly used in thread sub-title)

I've used different etrex models for the almost six years I've been geocaching. I already have the Garmin dash mount, suction cup mount, and two handlebar mounts. I just ordered a 76CSx and was hoping I could simply purchase a new mounting dock to fit it, and continue to use all of my existing mounts, but unfortunately, this doesn't appear to be an option.

It also seems that the Garmin mounts for the 76CSx simply allow the unit to snap in and out, not requiring the actual battery cover to be changed, and that they will allow access to the external power port. It looks like the cheapest option would be to buy another handlebar mount (with 76CSx dock) so I could continue using all of the other mounts I already own.

I know that RAM and other aftermarket outlets have a variety of good options available, but don't want to hear about them (at least not yet :anibad: ). What I am looking for is your experience using the 76CSx with Garmin's 'positive lock' accessories.

  16. It is in the track setup page. You can clear the existing track and tell it to not display. Have a read in the manual.

Could you please be a little more specific? This may be an option on the new generation of yellow etrexes, but doesn't seem to be available on the older generation. From the manual:
