  1. Another way to check just on the gc.com page is to log into your account and go to the My Account Details page.

Scroll down a bit and look on the right side under the Premium Features block.

If it says something like "your membership will expire...", you are not on auto-renew.

If however it says "Your membership will renew on...", you are on the auto-renew program.

I am on auto-renewal. My account info says "Your membership will continue through Monday, March 10, 2008.", which really doesn't tell me if it will automatically renew or not. Checking the PayPal status is definitely the way to be sure.

  2. Robert,

If you want maps to appear on the screen of your Legend, then you might consider keeping the topo maps, regardless of how far off the road and up the trail your going. In addition to topo contours, water bodies, etc. The topo package does contain much more street-level mapping detail than the included basemap. It will not give you turn by turn directions, but the Legend isn't capable of that, regardless of the mapset it contains. Also, the topo map (within the MapSource program) are broken into smaller 'tiles', and by nature are smaller in data size the 'routable' map tiles, because the are basically images and don't have to have all of the extra data necessary for the behind the scenes route calculation. You'll be able to have a much larger coverage area in your unit with the topo mapset. I haven't seen City Navigator firsthand yet (I'm waiting for this year's upgrade before buying), but I have an old copy of MetroGuide. With that, the tiles are so large that only a single one can be uploaded. It is inevitable, that the area you want to load will lie partly in one map tile and partly in another, leaving you without full coverage of the area you wish to have loaded. :P Lastly, there are no 'unlock codes' involved with the Topo! product, so even if you have 15 Garmin gps units, you can use the maps on all of them (assuming they are capable units). Auto-routing products like the City Navigator software are limited to being used with two units, then additional unlock codes must be purchased.

Are you reluctant to shop online in general, or just for this task? If you have the money, a 60 series would make a nice pairing with the Legend as the 'backup' unit and there are some great deals online. The topos will work with those units as well, but again, will not provide you with the ability to 'auto-route', even though the 60 series is capable of it. I just bought a 76CSx about a month ago (identical in features to the 60CSx) and got it for $150 less than Garmin's list price. Much like the advice you've already gotten, folks here can steer you towards reputable sources of an online gps purchase.

  3. What I mean is: I don't see added waypoints on the cache pages, even for caches where I added waypoints. What do I have to do to see added waypoints? I'm sure it's probably painfully obvious, but if there's a link or something, I haven't found it.

They appear as part of your log entry. You won't know about them unless you actually view the log or get it electronically via a PQ. The coordinates you enter do not become the new 'listed' coordinates for the cache. Someone who grabs the posted coords and goes out the door without reading the cache page will have no clue that corrected coords exist for a cache.

  4. Sure. Jeremy and crew found there was enough of a need/demand for this that they added it as a 'feature'.

From the log entry screen, check the "Add a waypoint to the log" box. This will re-load the page and provide custom fields for your coords so you don't have to include them in the regular text portion of your log if you don't want to.

  5. Hi,

You've made some great choices. GSAK and CacheMate are an awesome combination. As you get to know GSAK, you'll be amazed at what all it's capable of doing.

I'm assuming the 60 series units are what you're calling 'more preferable', but unable to be found.

I've recently upgraded, but have used a Legend for about three years and absolutely loved it. You're also on the right track that package #2 may be the best value, but not practically tailored to your plans as you've expressed them.

A pc cable (with or without USB adapter) will be very helpful to you. The last I knew, all Legend units came with them, even if you didn't buy them as part of a larger package. I'd be surprised if package #1 didn't contain this too. If not, there are many after-market sources where this can be picked up cheaper than Garmin's list for their 'genuine' model.

    Welcome to geocaching!

  6. I believe you can only have 40 saved queries. If your list is maxed out, it doesn't matter when the last time you ran one of them. There is no empty slot for the new query to drop into. Try deleting one or more of your existing queries.

  7. I've used a Legend to hide a few caches. When I reach the spot where I want to hide the cache, I set the track log to record a point every thirty seconds, leaving it sit for 15-20 minutes.

When I get home, I download the track, which is basically a scattered group of points with a line connecting them all. I drop a new waypoint in the center of the mass, and presto, you have an 'averaged' set of coordinates.

EasyGPS (a free program) will allow you to do this. There are no maps, but you're data can be displayed on a blank white screen, so you have everything you need to mark your 'averaged' spot.

  8. If you're getting the .gpx files, then the hints should be appearing in GSAK, regardless of any gps issues you may have. Have you checked a random selection of caches? Not all caches have hints. If it doesn't have a hint, it won't be in GSAK or your gps no matter what you do.

Find a cache that definitely has a hint, then see if the hint is in GSAK (and double-check your gps too).

    edited to add:

You mention 'downloading' the info. Pocket Queries come in your e-mail on the day(s) you select. If you're 'previewing' the pocket query and download the list of 20, you're getting the .loc data that I mentioned above. The .gpx file that you specified is delivered to you by e-mail. You can also download the .gpx file for any single cache from the cache listing itself.

  9. The owner used the abbreviation because of the listing guideline regarding commercial caches. A cache page shouldn't be an advertisement to go shopping at Food Lion.

So simply having the literal name of a place in the cache name is considered an advertisement or could be considered an advertisement?

What about a well-established 'code phrase' that doesn't explicitly mention the name of the business, but is so widely known that it's clear what business the cache is at?

    *edited to fix typo

  10. You need to make sure that the symbol assigned to the waypoints you are uploading match the symbol defined as a geocache in the geocache set-up screen.

You can actually change this to be any symbol you want, but the designated symbol and waypoints you want recognized must all share that symbol, whatever it is.

  11. I have two items for sale:

1 Garmin dash mount (010-10274-00) for the etrex series. I glued velcro onto the bottom, but I do have both the temporary and permanent adhesive disks (unused) that originally came with it. Asking $25.00 shipped in the USA.

    010-10274-00.jpg

1 Garmin belt clip (010-10349-00) for the etrex series. Asking $10.00 shipped in the USA.

    010-10349-00.jpg

I have ebay feedback of 213, with 100% positive feedback (user gnbrotz), and am PayPal verified. If the same person wants both items, it will be $30.00 shipped.

I will accept PayPal or Money Order. Items will ship the day after PayPal notification or receipt of money order.

    1. Use the Enter/Mark key to quickly capture your current location to create the new waypoint.
    2. Use the rocker to move to the point on the map where you want to create the waypoint, and press Enter/Mark.
    3. Create a new waypoint (see step one); highlight the location field, press enter; use the rocker to enter location coordinates; hightlight OK, press enter when finished.

Items 1 & 3 are considered 'different' by Garmin as spelled out in the manual, though arguably they are the same method.

    *Edited to add:

The "From current position" is automatically calculated to show how far a given waypoint is from where you are right now. You can't enter anything here, because that info changes depending on where you are and where that particular waypoint is.

Also, the "Project a waypoint" feature could be considered a fourth way to create a new wayoint.
