  1. Awesome deal. Thanks for posting! Darn, I jumped on it at $269 at Bass Pro already!
  2. Hey all, I have an iPhone 3GS but am looking at a Garmin Oregon. How would the performance of the iPhone compare to the Oregon as geocaching device? Anyone here use the iPhone without an additional GPS?
  3. I wonder when the sale ends? Amazon is supposed to be doing Black Friday price matching, not sure how that will work though.
  4. Interesting idea. El Diablo But there is no way to leave stuff, or to have an in game log is there? Thats why it would be a "Virtual". Someone could identify an object to screenshot and the logging of it could take place on a guild website or such. I really like this idea! I quit playing WoW because it was boring, this could be fun!

  6. I'll second this sentiment. I usually go with my 8 and 10 year old girls. The first few caches we did, when I spotted the cache I triumphantly hauled it out with a shout. The kids were of course excited regardless, but nowadays when I spot the cache I'll often casually say something like "Hey Lauren, why don't you take that pile of stumps over there and I'll check over here" and then wait for the shrieks of delight. It's so much more fun and the kids' excitement is easily triple what it was when I was the one who "found" the cache. Ya, one of the ones my son found was funny. It was a micro imbedded in a stick. I picked up the stick to check a tree hollow behind it and replaced the stick. My son picked the stick back up and said "AH HA! Here it is". There was a hole in the stick, inside which was a section of garden hose, inside which was the cache. He loved that one
  7. Good tip. At first we just used the proximity alarm, and tried to head toward the dot
  8. We took our new 60CSX out for a spin at a local park today. I had loaded a bunch of caches onto it before leaving, and I had my iPhone with me too. The first one we hunted we didnt find, we moved on. The second one was well hidden but my 13 year old found it. We couldnt find the third either. I found the fourth. And my 13 year old found the fifth. The compass was useless at first, until I remembered we had to calibrate it, then it was great. My wife loved controlling the GPS and leading the pack. My 10 year old wanted to get back home and play video games, ah well, maybe in time. It was a great, very fun, and even productive first outing!
  9. Does it get better with $$$ maps, the built in map seems really sparse?
  10. Ok, I bought it, but I feel a little underwhelmed, what does it do for me? It allows me to access the same data I can get from the website?
  11. Thanks for the info, I just purchased the new version.

  14. I have a iPhone, a Magellan Explorist 210, and soon a Garmin 60CSX. I ordered the Garmin before I bought the iPhone, but now I am wondering if I really needed it. Maybe the older GPS is good enough with the iPhone.
  15. I just got my iPhone and I have a 60csx on order (expensive week)! Should I wait before I open the Gps and give the iPhone alone a try?
  16. Wellll... if you or someone you know knows UNIX (Linux, MacOSX, etc) and knows how to setup a 'crontab' .. just run this script from cron every 5 minutes. It will send an email to you when the price is under a certain threshold (Make sure to edit the email addresses to your own and/or your cell phone!) This is the script I used.. got a text message this morning at 7:15 and jumped out of bed and purchased it. :-) very cool!
  17. Sounds like a ruggedized 500 with lanyard attachment would be just the ticket.
  18. Prices seem pretty comparable, in this order on amazon.com: 550 : 269.80 500 : 327.75 60csx : 274.97 76csx : 266.65 The 550 has highway maps and the 500 has topo maps, can you install the other maps if you get one?
  19. The 60csx and 76csx do seem to be popular with motorcyclists. Maybe they are more durable and weather proof? I thought the touch screen on the 500 would be nice though. Anyone seen a comparison between the 60/76 and the 500/550?
  20. Hey all, I am torn between what device to get. I dont want to buy and maintain two devices, so I am looking for the best compromise. I have a Mac, so I am sticking with Garmin. I am looking at either a 60csx or a Nuvi 500. I want to use it on my motorcycle (mounted), or in my car. I also want to use it for geocaching and boating/canoeing. I like the touchscreen and design of the 500, but the 60csx looks sturdier. Any thoughts?
