  1. Who is going to Big Bear for the event? B.R.A will again be hosting an open house/happy hour after the event! Hope to see you there!

I may be finally making it to my first BB Cache Bash. Steve Dillon and I were just up there recently hitting a bunch of caches, but there is still a bunch more to do. I'd also consider doing the rest of the Big Bear 4x4 Black Diamond Challenge caches GC1DZFV that the SlabyFam and Ruscal got the FTF on.

Do I want numbers or adventure?

  2. Remember when:

It took most people 1/2 year or so to get to 100 finds. NOBODY had a kilo..

Almost all caches were long hikes to beautiful spots...

Your breath was not a factor (who was that guy who first discovered Altoids tins?!?)...

I think Duncan! introduced me to M&M tubes in something like 2005...

Puzzle caches?!? What are those? EVERYTHING was at the posted coords... (First Contact by Parsa was my first puzzle cache)...

If a cache popped up late at night, you could pretty safely sleep in 'till 9 am or so and still count on a FTF...

Forums? There are forums? What are THEY for?...

Tennis shoes for the first year. I didn't buy a pair of hiking boots until AFTER I climbed El Cajon Mountain...

Coronado Bridge Passes -- the first personal item. Where's mark71mark? He was the FTF hound back then, along with RUSCAL and Team Gecko, and his name was on EVERY log. He was the equivalent of kwvers today. Care to guess his total find count? And the answer is .... 551...

Well, that was then, and this is now, and the game has certainly moved on. Seems most players are into the numbers, and that's good for the Lily Pond 'cause it generates revenues to keep the site alive. But if that was all it had to offer, I'm sure I wouldn't still be playing the game. It's those caches at the end of an invigorating hike to a beautiful spot that I would never had seen, or some really cool cammo, or some mind-bending puzzle, or some other fun component that keeps me coming back. I guess the "just-another-lamp-skirt-for-the-numbers" caches are still a little more fun than the typical day at work, but I would probably find something better to do with my time if all caches were nothing more than that.

So thanks to everyone who gives back to this game and provides something entertaining to read on the website or to find at GZ. Looking forward to seeing what all those creative minds out there will come up with next!

Ditto on those insights- congrats on 5000.

  3. anybody bored and need to get outta the house tomorrow (Friday)? Teacher off on summer break needs friend for caching adventure. willing to cache almost anywhere.

Teaching is a great profession for cachers. The entire summer is off but it's tough when it's too hot to go hiking. I'll head out with you on Friday.

  4. If anyone happens to be off on Thursday and wants to do some caching drop me a email. I don't mind hiking or riding the bicycle. Home Base is the Chula Vista area.

I'm off on Thursday and would love to go hike. I have a bike but I doubt there is even air in the tires. Have you done the area aound Skillet's Delight caches? I've been hitting caches in teh south but have a lot more to go. I'm sure we can find an area where both of us would be satisfied.

  5. Saturday, June 7th: Otay Mountain Truck Trail

Time: To Be Determined (Probably about 8:00/9:00 am)

I will be starting on the Hwy 94 side and work our way through all the caches. :) I already had some interest from other in going. I have heard from Lost Clan, Zeber and the Fat Cats. Anyone else is welcome. Most of this trail can be driven by 2x4 with a couple 4x4 spurs of the main road.

This is a heads up for those interested in joining us. I am taking my tundra and may have some room for a person or two, depending on who is riding with me. I will post the time, meeting place later this week.

Also, after the day of driving, we plan on heading north to the event for that evening. :D

    Paul

    Team Adelos

I'm in! Lots of caches to get. I hope the weather stays cooler.

  6. OK, roll call for Saturday! If you could please post if you will be meeting us @ 7:15 at the park & ride for breakfast at Penfolds, or just meeting us up at the trailhead at 9:00. After our tour of the Rawson trail, some of us will be hangin' in Temecula, and some of us will be heading back home.

Looking forward to an awesome time!

    Robyn :)

I'll be there- but my wife said no to a long day of caching. So I'll meet everyone at the trailhead at 9am.

    Dave

  7. As far as the Rawson trail next Saturday, we'll be meeting at the Park & Ride to carpool off of Deer Springs Rd (GCTDRH) at 7:15, heading up to Penfolds for breakfast at 8:00 (28250 Old Town Front St, Temecula), and hitting the trail around 9:30. We should hit at least 25 caches along Rawson and De Portola Road. Not quite sure how long the ride will be, so bring some snacks and drinks to enjoy en route. This trail is 2WD accessible, so would love to have everyone join us!

Robyn & Kathy of Team Reid :)

Starting cache will be Rawson Road Entrance (GC160DZ) and ending with Butterfield Stage (GC19X8V)

My wife and I will be able to attend- if not for the breakfast (too early for her) then we'll definitely see you at the trailhead at 9:30.

    Dave

  8. Looks like there might be a few of us doing the Rawson trail up in Temecula on April 26th. If anyone would like to join us, please post and we'll set it up! Tentatively, there is Team Reid, Canadian Grl, and possibly Habu!. Penfolds for breakfast? Will announce details closer to the 26th. Should be a fun trail!

Robyn & Kathy of Team Reid :(

Is this 2wd friendly? - I'm thinking about not bringing the jeep. These gas prices and 12 mpg are killing me. Either way I'm in forthis cache run.

    Dave

  9. So is anyone interested in doing the Otay Mountain Truck Trail after the event this Saturday? Sounds like I may have one vehicle with me so far.

    TA

It's been a while since I've done the caches there and I'm sure there are some newer ones.

    Dave

  10. Any one have updated status on the caches in ABDSP? I bagged a few caches in Agua Caliente last weekend, my GPS map shows that's inside ABDSP...

I don't think we will ever get caches inside the Park under the present "leadership." ;)This cache, which invites you to visit several great location in the SW Region of the Park, is still unfound. :D

I am hoping the final container is still in place. A person affliated with the Park emailed me threatening to remove it, even though it is not within the boundaries of ABDSP.

They are very serious about not wanting Geocachers to visit Geocache locations within the Park . . .

Well- how about a few hundred people create sock puppet accounts and log finds on this cache to just to show these bastards that we are allowed to visit anywhere within the park.

Why should this make them angry? I thought what pissed them off was the cache containers being left in the desert.

Sounds to me, that what really irks them, are people visiting the park!

  11. I was wondering in which direction people are heading out for caching next Saturday after the CITO?

I've done about 75% of the caches in the area but am a bit weak in the Superstition Mtn Region. I also was too chicken to do the Illyngophobites or Acrophobites beware! Cache (GCJ5RC). If any jeeps want to join me it'll be moderate four wheelin'.

  12. It looks like Unknown to U/Chaotic Cacher's habit of placing caches in plain view of muggles has finally caught up with him/us:

    http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...a0-b7d98ad07be7

I did a drive-by of that one recently and was glad I skipped it! I wouldn't have wanted to be surrounded by eight people with guns! It was in the median in plain view of a security guard so I skipped it and put it on my ignore list (along with about 25 other U to U's).

Are you saying that Unknown to U is the Chaotic Cacher???? :):D:D

Do you have any evidence of this accusation? Pictures? Video? Eyewitness?

I don't understand what you are suggesting?

My interpretation isn't clear about the cacher(s) but it is clear about the types of caches rjbloom & co. is referring to. Horrible placements with little regard for the finder to inconspicuously make the find. Often these caches are knowingly placed within view of muggles, hence the request to 'use stealth'. But many of these caches that ask for stealth also don't contain any meaningful hints.

These placements are also insensitive to the safety of the nearby employess, business owners, and residents. When your cache gets blown up by the police it should be a colossal wake up call that you're doing something wrong. It could seriously affect the future of our hobby.

Many times these poor placements are by cachers who have an imbalance between the number of hides (too many) to finds (not enough). Early on in caching there was an unwritten rule that you had to get a few hides under your belt so that you could learn what makes a proper placement. Experienced cachers should also be more honest in our logs about caches that could be problematic. GC.com should seriously consider instituting a rating system to let hiders know their cache may suck.

  13. There is a new cacher (abvlntrs) now helping the Rangers remove caches. The lastest one removed that I know of is Borrego Overlook Travel Bug Resort, it was on my watchlist. They started the account in Feb. and list themselves as park volunteers.

Well let's invite the new cacher and Uber-Volunteer out to the CITO event. Or are caches the only kind of trash they'll sink to picking up?

  14. Unfortunately there is a conflict in my schedule of fun for my summer vacation- Rubicon trip July 24-26th or Colorado caching and Wheeling July 26th-?. I'm going to have to go with the Rubicon- it's a bit cheaper since Off Road Warehouse will be transporting my jeep up there and with gas prices the way they are- it makes it an obvious choice.

  15. Thanks for the info everyone. In the past I would create my own fire circle with rocks from around the camping area. I wonder if people would confuse my rock circle with something built by Indians. Guess I shouldn't have done that. But it was OK with the Superintendent because I wasn't a geocacher then anyways. It would only be bad if a geocacher did it.

  16. I saw a sign heading out to Ocotillo Wells that I had never noticed before which really concerned me. It may be a new sign or it may be something I just never noticed. The sign is located along the 78 right after one of the many very large Anza-Borrego Entrance signs next to the San Felipe Bridge cache.

What concerned me about the sign is a rule that I didn't know was a part of the now growing list of rules in ABSP. It said Welcome to ABSP- No Shooting and No Campfires.

Now I can understand the No Shooting part. But since when did the rangers start enforcing a No Campfires rule? Is this another one of Jorgenson's gems of new rules to make it HIS park and not for the people who actually use it?

I understand that when camping in National Forests in places like Big Bear that I'm not going to be able to have a campfire because of a heightened fire danger. That was always the appeal of going to the desert- the ability to have a campfire and not worry that flying embers would burn all of Southern California.

If this rule is not something new then I confess- I have broken the law many times in my camping days in ABSP.

  17. Since the weather may not be cooperating for another go at MTRP this weekend I'd like to head out to Ocotillo Wells. Skillet has blessed us again with an enormous number of new caches.

The cache run I'd like to do is to head out to the Jet Engine cache. Anybody who'd like to join me is welcome. I will probably head out around 7am from the Rancho Penasquitos area.

  18. too bad they don't have an "Ignore" button for the forums...
Actually they do. Click on "My Controls" on the top right. Then click on "Manage Ignored Users" towards the bottom of the left side. I think it's time to use it again....

Thanks for the info- I just exercised my option to ignore some morons who have invaded our local discussions. Now I only wish that I could eliminate that 'hot' avatar from showing up.

  19. If Anza Borrego Desert State Park is off limits, consider caching in the the huge Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area next door. I can't imagine a cache site having any impact to Ocotillo Wells, at least when compared to the impacts of the vehicular recreation that goes on there.

Geocaching does not have any impact on the environment . . . Some of the caches that were removed had been found only six times in the past year. Also, in the Ocotillo Wells area, there just isn't any scenery like this, which is near where the Powder Can Cache was located.

Nor is there evidence of past History such as this:

    689b537c-307a-4b5d-aef1-4f8220984bb7.jpg

And, in the Ocotillo Wells area, I sure haven't seen anything like this, which is in the Domelands area.

I am very indebted to the cachers who put caches in those locations giving me the opportunity to see those places and have wonderful memories of caching in ABDSP.

Why must there be a box of trinkets at the end of your trail?

You poor soul, not know the feeling of discovering somewhere new on your own.

It must suck to need a guide to enjoy the desert.

Shutup, you pathetic sock puppet! You're lower than a troll- at least they don't hide behind fictitious names.

Maybe you need a guide to find your misplaced 'reason'.
