  1. Having two friends that have the same GPS would be a benefit. You can ask them questions and you guys can "geek" together. Customer support is very important as well. I just got my 60csx for Christmas-wife paid for half of it I have not played with it in the field but I really like the size etc.. I am still new to this unit. My only real complaint so far is the way it handles maps. I am going by what I have read here so please correct me if I am wrong guys I have a 2GB uSD card for it and have read that you cannot load up various types of maps at the same time. I have read you cannot have topo maps as well as the City Navigator ones loaded up together. I would like to have the 24/M topo ones of near by state parks, the normal 100/M US topo ones that you can buy and maybe put the few states around me of the City Navigator which I did not even buy yet if at all. Maybe in the future I would like some marine ones or whatever as well. I was thinking a way around it may be that, since it saves everything on the uSD card as one file, I could set up various files with it and copy them with a PDA. Or just do a rename if I have enough space. I have not tried it yet and it would take some time to copy a 1+GB files anyway. Then the location of the uSD slot would make it hard to pop in and out. Anyway just some random thoughts
  2. I recommend a program called Geoniche. http://www.raydarllc.com/ This is the best program for GC with the Palm. The documentation with it covers how to get the waypoints into the program. --Imports GPX and geocaching.com files --Imports points of interest and driving directions from Google Maps You simply download these files from the web site of your choice with all your caches and he has a small conversion program that generates a pdb file that you simply install to the palm. It can also contain the notes, hints etc.. it even has a hint decoder built in. About the only thing I do not like is it does not use the full screen mode of the Palm. I Emailed the author about it and he may consider adding it so ask for this when you order I assume you already have a bluetooth GPS that transmits to the Palm. If you want to just use the Palm for cache information and use a stand alone GPS I still recommend the program as it can be used that way as well. Some small utilities that may also help you out. http://factsfacts.com/geocachingsoft/ThotsUtilities.htm http://www.easygps.com/
  3. Well my wife offered to pay half for my Christmas gift this year (a bit late) so I broke down and got the Garmin 60CSX. I REALLY wanted one anyway, it is the best handheld out at the moment IMHO. I am not new to GPS, just GC. When I head out I will take that and my PDA setup and compare. I will let you know how it goes from a beginners standpoint for GC-ing. Just FYI I did stumble across this in my searches for PPC software. Looks similar to GeoNiche. http://www.visualgps.net/BeeLineGPS/default.htm Thanks guys.. I hope to contribute more here.
  4. Hi, first post to here! Since I have not read much in the forums yet, this may be repeated info. If so sorry. I am new to geocaching itself so bare with me. I have two Palm based PDA's as well as an PPC Ipaq 2795b. I bought a Holux GPSlim 236 unit that uses bluetooth to send the GPS data to the Palm or PPC. I did come across a really cool program for the Palm called Geoniche http://www.raydarllc.com/ This software looks very cool and useful. It has a small converter program you run that takes all the cache info and sets all the way points etc.. It also imports all the notes of the cache. I really love the zoom feature as you get closer you can zoom the display in/out, very cool. It looked so cool I bought it even before actually using it in the field So far it has worked very well in testing it in the yard etc... but I have not actually went out in the field with it yet as I said (If anyone has any ideas on a cool PPC program that has similar functions, please let me know.) Anyway I just wanted to toss that info out there for the thread and then ask if anyone has any opinions on this set up versus a good hand held GPS like the Garmin 60CSX I have been looking at. Do you think, for geocaching, a hand held unit like the Garmin would be worth it? Would it give me any better results, get me even closer etc..? Would it offer the same functionality as the Geoniche software with notes etc..? The Holux and Garmin both use the same chipset but the Holux does not have WAAS support. I am unsure if WAAS is useful for geocaching enough to get the handheld just because of that. Any pros or cons?
