  1. As I commented elsewhere...

I kissed a frog. I'm not ashamed to admit it. (Still waiting for my prince in tights to appear)

My guess is that that was chosen as a first Worldwide Challenge because Groundspeak wanted something really easy that anybody could do if they just wanted to "try out" how a challenge would work in practice. Yes, it's a bit silly but at least frogs have an special status within geocaching.

As for the rest... I think it's a pity that within the first hour of the Challenges being released some cachers were already throwing out the Challenge equivalent of the film pot in the bush. Maybe the mistake that Groundspeak made was in thinking that geocachers would take the time to consider the full potential for creating interesting/engaging/clever/amusing challenges and would police the standards themselves?

I'm hopeful that once all this initial silliness has worn off that we'll end up with some worthwhile challenges. Once those who think they're being oh-so-clever by logging all the daft things with photoshopped logs get bored maybe, just maybe, there will be something interesting left that will add a new dimension to this whole Language of Location thing.

    MrsB

Hooray for MrsB! I also kissed a frog to see what it was all about. They probably aren't going to be our thing, but I really can't see what all the tantrums are in aid of. If you don't like them, then DON'T CLICK ON THE LINK! Some of the spoof challenges were initially funny, but now they are just spoiling it for others who want to do some serious ones.

  2. I shall give it a couple of days to see how things pan out, and if it stays the same as it is now I will be archiving all my 50 Groundspeak caches and publishing them on opencaching.org.uk instead.

Groundspeak had an unassailable position as far as cache listings are concerned - other sites could not take it away from them, they could only lose that position if they did something really stupid. And they just did.

I don't know if this will result in other sites getting a bigger share, or not, but it was incredibly stupid of Groundspeak even to offer the opportunity.

    Rgds, Andy

Same here. At least then nobody will try to force unwanted rubbish down our throats for their own commercial ends.

I've just completed one of the challenges just to see what the score was. It will more than likely be my first and last. Some will like them though and am I just being dim when I say - if they're not your cup of tea, just don't click on the Challenges link?

  3. We just got a travel bug back that's gone round the world.

The football season starts in just under a week.

I've got a new Oregon 450T (well new to me anyway).

My mountain bike has just been serviced and goes like the clappers.

We've found an A.P.E. cache and Delta68 still has to go to Brazil to get his. B)

    Simple things and all that..........

  4.

There's nothing in the package at the moment that would tempt me to change from my Oregon. Plus it's easy to change from a 300 Oregon to a 450T without the person who put you on a gadget ban noticing. Claiming your Oregon grew overnight and changed name might be a bit more difficult to pull off.......

Oh that is soooo sneaky ... I love it!

Not that I would even think about fooling my other half .... but he didn't even notice that (after only 3 months of caching) my old GPS 60 turned into a Oregon 300 overnight.

So I don't think I will have any problem turning my Oregon into a Montana!

I'm on borrowed time. Ali notices everything eventually....

& Team Tisri - As I know everything on the internet is true - I'm just about to try that with our old 60Csx. My lawyers will give you a ring in about half an hour.

    :)

IT WORKS!!!!! It's turned into an Oregon 450T!! Right, now to convince Ali.......

  6. I think it's too big and chunky.

Not big and chunky, big and beautiful!

You would indeed have a job getting it mounted on a bike though. Will get a chance to try it out for real this weekend. The screen is amazing and the extra information down the side is brilliant. Just a bit disappointed that I'm having a problem finding a car mount for it. They don't seem to have hit the UK yet. I shall rig it up on a universal mount and plug a mini speaker in instead though to get the sat nav features working for now. I do love my gadgets! :anibad:

I can tell you're regretting it all ready. :P Even walking along the road with it, you'll look like you're carrying a small portable tele! :D

  7. Having seen the Montana at the MEGA, I think it's too big and chunky. I can't imagine it on the handle bars of my mountain bike. It doesn't support Wherigo and unless you're DrSolly - who really needs a 12k cache capacity? By the time you get round to doing them, the PQ's will be out of date anyway.

  8. i give up i will carry on with the dakota as it is thanks anyway

If you carry on just using the base maps you're not using your GPSr to it's full potential. Persevere. There are various step by step guides that will show you exactly how to do it. If you only use the base map, you've wasted your money to be honest and might just have well bought a cheaper one. Would you buy a Ferrari and just use it to give your mum a lift to Asda? (Not that I would condone going over the speed limit of course.....)

Talkytoaster maps are your way forwards. Be patient with the download old chap! You won't regret it.

  9. I'm really looking forward to this event already!

There has been a terrific amount of research and work gone into this; it's not during the Oympics, precisely because people will want to be at the Olympics, at home watching the Olympics, volunteering etc etc!

Clearly every event will not suit all tastes; however, what's the point of naysayers coming here and criticising, if it is not your cup of tea, move on to something that is!

There are events every year that don't pique my interest, so I look for ones that do, rather than come here trying to pick holes in peoples hard work that is clearly popular with others :P

    Well done SimplyPaul!

    Well said.

  10. Good news!

Both tunnels are now open, although the west bound one has a 30 mph speed restriction. This shouldn't make a big difference to journey times.

They clearly pulled out all the stops for the Mega!

I finish work at 6am on Sunday morning and have got to Boris bike it to the station to get the first train to here be dragon's land. If there are any problems with the trains or if I get stuck at work - I may need you to put the Mega back a week or so. That's ok isn't it? B)

  11. Hi There,

I think i may have lost some imformation on my 450,Whenever i try to mark waypoint i get the message Database error. This worked ok untill i conected my 450 upto the wifes laptop whilst an holiday. Since then i get that message. Iv'e searched the forums looking to re install the software but can't find it? is this worth trying?

    Regards Dave

You could attach it to the webupdater. It has a re-install section (although I'm not sure what it re-installs.)

You could also try looking here.

Alternatively, blame your wife and demand she buy you another. :)

    Thanks for the reply

The re-install only re-installs the latest update.I can't find the info to re-install the original software though?

    Regards Dave

Ask in the wikispaces forum - you may have more luck there.

  13. My recommendation: Oregon 450. The $50 rebate from Garmin is still on, and you may be able to catch it at an additionally low sale price somewhere. They can go as low as $220 or so.

    Alternatively: Dakota 10 or 20.

Some of the higher end eTrex models would also work (they support routing), but won't do paperless. If you prefer an eTrex style model anyway, you can wait for the new eTrex models (20, 30) to come out, they're gonna support paperless. Not sure about their price though.

None of these come with any detailed maps. You don't need to purchase a map, you can get very good maps for free off the interwebs, both topo maps and routeable street maps.

    +1 for an Oregon

  14. Oh...who was that sexy bloke I just saw on the telly?? :o:unsure:

You get about a bit lad!!;)

Oi, hands off!!! I saw him first! After his recent headline grabbing TV appearance, I've decided to become agent for 'Coach Palmer' as you all now have to call him. I've also identified some spare time that he has each week (between 4am and 4.45am) that he's kept quiet about. If anyone would like to book Coach Palmer, drop me an e-mail. He's available for birthdays, weddings, Bar Mitzvah's and 'Special' ladies nights. (Cheap rates if you're a member of the GAGB).

There's also a slight problem with a double booking on 31st July. He won't now be going to the Mega as he's off to the Middle East to help solve their problems instead. I bet they will be more appreciative of his efforts than some others............

  15. I need help with an argument on the internet. Can someone please complete this line for me:

Obscure??? But geocaching is more popular than ever, unfortunately!!!

Ladies and gentlemen we have the winner.

It's never been the same since all these new unwashed people joined! :P

    UNWASHED PEOPLE JOINED ?

You would get my hilarious joke if you read the virtuals thread.

The Unwashed, or the Great Unwashed?

I consider myself to be part of the Great Unwashed. I look down on those that are merely Unwashed.
