  1. Hi all. I have two Magellan GPS units. One is a 510 and the other is a 710. Up until a few weeks ago I could easily down load geocaches into both of these devices. Now although I get to the download stage when I push the button to download nothing happens. It recognises my units though. I have tried both of these units on my other computer which I use as well. Has any other cacher had this issue. I am using Explorer 11. I tried firefox and chrome as well.
  2. Hi there all. Forgive me if this is in the wrong section. I own a Magellan Explorist 510 which I am extremely happy with. However, lately, when I put a new cache in it although I know it is there I can not bring it up on the screen. I noticed this when I put a just published cache in the GPS and went out to look for it. When I got near the area I tried to find it but it would not show up. Well if this is happening to you then I have found the answer. Your memory on the gps may be full or you might have to many geocaches in the unit. I sent a request to a person in the United States about the issue and he gave me then instructions to fix it. Now I will put the instructions up below but first let me say what I did. Being a male I thought I did not need instructions. So instead of going through the steps as given I went straight to Tools then Settings then Memory. I then cleared it. After a short time the memory was cleared. Great but so was every geocache and track that was in it. But at least it is fixed. Now I will state the way that was given to me. That way you will not loose geocaches and saved tracks etc. 1) First use VantagePoint and make copy of all geocaches, routes, waypoints and trails. 2) Attach GPS to PC using USB cable. 3) This will produce a virtual disk named F:\Magellan 4) Make a mirror (backup copy) of your entire contents of the GPS to your PC. 5) Now close the PC to GPS connection. 6) Turn off the GPS. 7) Turn on the GPS. 8) Now clear ALL geocaches from the GPS. 9) Turn off the GPS. 10) Reinstall the latest firmware version for the unit. 11) Remember to use the forced install method as listed on our www.jungleghost.com website 12) Now go to VantagePoint and recopy all your geocaches to the GPS. I hope this helps other cachers fix the problem. Again please tell me if this is in the wrong section and I will fix it. See you all on the find Hillster Kev Hill.
  3. Hi all. I purchased a Magellan 510 two years ago. I am very happy with it as it is very accurate. I have the Summit Series maps in it that turns my GPS into a car GPS with turn by turn instructions to a cache. It also has Australian and New Zealand topo maps showing contour lines power lines streets rivers etc. Of late when I turn my 510 on it takes some time to index the database and I am getting very cranky with it. In the past it has taken up to 20 monutes to start. I have upgraded the firmware but I am now at the stage of buying a new GPS for Caching and hiking. As most people I meet whilst caching have a Garmin can some one tell me a good model to buy. It has to have 1. Turn by turn instructions to caches 2. Full TOPO maps with rivers contour lines power lines etc. 3. Camera 4. Water proof 5. All the tings most others do as well. Thanks in anticipation. Hillster.
  4. IE when it updates at times does the same to me. I now use Firefox and that works great. One thing you may try is to go to tools and select Add-ons and look for the Magellan add on. Look at the right hand side and make sure it says Always activate.
  5. When I have seen other peoples logs some refer to tools. Now I do have a few such as tweezers, torch pliers etc. However, some refer to numbers. Such as 'removed cache using tool number 9. Can any one put me on the site where I can find out what each number of a tool is thanks. See you in the field. Love meeting other cachers in the field.
  6. This blog is in case you may loose Topo maps on a Magellan Explorist 510. I did and could not find out why. I tired everything I could think of. Then I replaced the batteries. When I did it I noticed that the micro SD holder was out just a little. It was very hard to notice. One of the top pins came out. I fixed the holder back in position and got the maps back again. I hope what happened to me helps some one else. See you in the bush geocaching. I love meeting new geocachers whilst doing my hobby.
  7. Thank you for your help. I did it. What I was doing wrong was when I received the email I clicked on the link. I did not see the two attachment files. Ah. I downloaded the files and it worked. One was 4kb and the other was 48kb. (The query I did had 7 caches in it) Thank you again for your help. Kev.
  8. Thanks all. I did it and now can down individually from a list by clicking the right hand side of each cache. I was just wondering if there was some button that I could press to get them all at the same time. Thanks.
  9. Thank you Chief301 for your fast reply. When I get the result of either the PQ or just finding a geocache on the hide and seek a geocache part there is a box on the left that when I check it all the caches below it are also checked. Then go to the bottom to see if I can push button to get them all down loaded into the gps.
  10. Hi there. I have read some other questions about this mater but I am a bit confused between a GPX file and a LOC file. I am a premium member. I wish to down load multiple caches in one go if possible directly onto my Explorist 510 instead of going into each cache and hitting the sent do my gps button. I have done a Pocket Query say for Canberra and saw all the caches that I want to download onto my Explorist 510. I checked the boxes but when I go down the bottom it will only let me down load the Waypoints to the down load icon on my computer. I see that this is only basic information. Is there a way that I can say complete a query say for 10 km radius of Canberra and then get all of the caches to down load onto my gps with the descriptions and hints etc. Oh just another point I am not that great on a computer as you have probably worked out. Thanks Hillster
  11. I am logging on via a computer.
  12. Hi there. I have gone into my profile on Geocaching.com and set the time for where I live. (Sydney, Australia) however it shows a day behind. Can any one tell me how to change the date to the correct date. I can change the format but not the actual date. The date on the computer is correct as well. When I log a chache I have to continue to change the log date. Thanks Kev Hill
  13. I have noticed that some geocaches are in a round circle and others are in a rectangular box. Can any one tell me the difference.
  14. Hi there. I have a Explorist 510. Some times it takes ages to start up due to it indexing the database. Does any one know as to why it does this sometimes?
  15. Hi rosetigerdragon You could try Chrome. I do not know if your husband has done this but make the alternate browser (firefox for me) your main browser. Then re boot the computer. You have to get the add on for Firefox to work. When I tried after going to Firefox I had to set the program up. I attempted to hit the Magellan button then had to go and install the add-on. It took me a few minutes for this to happen. Then had to re start the computer. Luckily for me I have had no issues after that. I hope this works.
  16. Hi there. I am only new to this hobby (5 months). I do not know if this is the correct place to put this but here goes. I had problems with my coordinates not being correct on my Magellan Explorist 510. I could find Geocaches very accurately but the coordinates were out according to other Cachers GPS's. I was told to change the Datum to an Australian one (as I live in Sydney) so I did. But that made little difference. In the end I found out that the default setting on my GPS was on Degrees only. I changed it to Degrees/Minutes and it corrected it straight away. Just thought that I would put this post in case any other newbie had the same issue. See you in the field Hillster.
  17. Hi there after posting a blog before that I could no longer download cache info into my GPS (Magellan Explorist 510)I took some advice and downloaded Firefox. Made Firefox my internet browser and it now works. Apparently when you upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 the Internet Explorer updates as well. As a result, some programs do not work. I sent a message to geocaching.com and received a very quick reply from Annika as did another cacher luivvinbird. I was advised to try a few things that did not work. However, they told me that if it did not work then download either Google Chrome or Firefox. I chose Firefox and it worked straight away. Very please I have the capacity of downloading caches again. Thank you Annika from geocaching.com and luvvinbird for your assistance. Hope this helps others. Perhaps I might see some of you in the field. I will be the old bloke in the bush scratching my head looking for caches. Kev Hill hillster
  18. All good now. Got rid of Internet Explorer and downloaded Mozilla Firefox. Working just fine now. Thanks for the info.
  19. Thanks mate but Chrome does not work as well. Getting mad now. Put in an inquiry to Windows but no reply.
  20. Hi there. I am new to this area and only have been caching since August. I have a Magellan 510. I have been using the download system for the caches via this site. All has been working just fine on Widows 8. Then I upgraded to Windows 8.1 Now when I plug my Magellan explorist 510 in and try to down load the caches it tells me that it can not find the plug in. I have reloaded it several times but it still will not work. I was using Explorer at my web browser and even tried Chrome. Still will not work. I can not revert back to Windows 8. Any suggestions.
