  1. We went to a cache meet recently which was a 'lunch-time' meet. It was pretty disappointing. Ok while we were there, but we'd travelled around 80 miles and the whole place had cleared out by about 2:30pm.

I'd much rather have an event touted as a whole afternoon, then people can come and go. We tend not to go caching on cache event days - just sit in the pub and chat.

That's my take on the matter.

    Cheers,

    Stu

  2. I believe that the only place that could have given out my email address was the traveler tag page or one of the other pages run by the same organization that runs traveler tags.

Needless to say, I am saddened by this, and don't plan on doing much business with a company that appears to disregard their posted privacy policy.

    That's easily checked experimentally.

I have just created a disposable domain. The only place that domain will ever appear is in my email address for TT.com which I have just registered.

I can disable the domain (and spam) if there's a problem.

    I'll report on progress...

    Cheers,

  3. Really sorry - there was a change around in scheduling and your geocaching video diary will now be broadcast on Sunday 13th February.

I hope this isn't a huge problem for you. Very sorry about the confusion.

Bah! Didn't see this until after watching some mountain rescue people planting Junipers in the lake district.

    It was quite interesting, though.

My word - it is heavily edited, isn't it. Don't blink, folks!

  4. Just had a look at the site - would it not be clearer to just use 4-figure grid refs, and throw out all those redundant 5s?

    SK0000, SK0001, SK0002 etc.

    rather than:

    SK005005, SK005015, SK005025

I can see why you've used 6 figures - to get near the centre of each square, but it add a lot of clutter to the site.

Feel free to ignore me, of course!

    Cheers,

  5. You are free to give away DVD's and CD's provided they are the originals and you are not keeping "backup" copies for yourself.

...and if it's music of your own creation - well, please share! I'd love to find people's own work in caches.

But not copies of commercial stuff. Nope.

    Cheers,

  6. If money is really no object, I would go for a Vista. Shortly after buying the legend, I sort-of wished we'd spent the extra cash at the time for the extra memory and compass. Mainly the memory.

Of course, it's all academic now we have our lovely 60CS.

But anyway... to your original question... the Legend will give you a much richer experience than the basic eTrex. It's easier to type numbers with the clickstick than the limited buttons of the yellow. The resolution is better, so skyview, maps and all are easier to follow.

Definitely the Legend out of those two.

(We've owned yellow, legend and 60CS)

    Cheers,

  7. Somewhere to stay overnight, Somewhere that does food and good ale and a garage that sells diesel.

And the odd cache or two within walking distance, of course and a room or bar where we can just sit and chew the breeze.

I agree. At a cache meet, I want to talk to cachers. No need for a quiz or a huge multi. I can do them without travelling to a cachers meet

  8. _Intrepid' date='Feb 1 2005, 11:22 PM'] Have you considered OziExplorer? It does the same things as Fugawi. Just a suggestion...

    From their site:

"OziExplorerCE runs on Pocket PC's and handheld PC's. It does not run on Palm."

Unfortunately, I have a Palm handheld that I want to run it on.

Thanks for the pointer. Had I had a CE machine, I think I would have plumped of Ozi Explorer at the outset.

  9. AHAAA!

After literally hours of searching, I have found my answer.

Because of licensing restrictions, the Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 version (at 49 pounds) of Fugawi does NOT allow you to use your own scanned maps.

The full, unrestricted version of Fugawi (at 79 pounds) DOES allow you to scan your own maps, BUT is not compatible with the Ordnance Survey digital maps.

Seems like their licensing restrictions are very silly

Oh well... so it looks like I need the more expensive version, because the cheaper one really is crippled software. It's exactly the same as the other version but with map importing disabled. Bah.

    Cheers,

    Stu

  10. I possibly didn't make myself clear.

    Is it:

One piece of software, with various map options at different prices.

    Or:

Do the differently priced variations have different software.

    Example:

    1. Fugawi software with UK 1:50000 topo map, 1/4 of the country for 49 pounds.

    2. Fugawi software with European roads for 79 pounds.

Since I'm hoping to scan my own maps, I guess I should go for the 49 pound version. BUT does this include the palm software?

Another problem: I've downloaded the demo and can't for the life of me figure out how to import a jpg map I've scanned.

    Cheers,

    Stu

  11. I'm looking for a solution for scanning maps and putting them on my computer and palm handheld with GPS tracking, waypoints, routes etc. It looks like Fugawi will do the job, but there's something not clear from their website...

It seems there are lots of options for which mapping you require with lots of different prices, but can someone answer this...

Does the software work like Mapsource with one base software installation and lots of mapping on top of it? Or if I pick one of the cheaper options, will I get a somehow crippled version of the software (without the handheld version, for example)?

And advice would be most appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Stu

  12. Snow. Grr. When we visited this cache, we cleared a two-foot snowdrift for the entire length of this wall. The spoiler said it was there. Then we cleared a similar drift from another wall nearby. Then we discovered the cache was on the other side - where there was very little snow. <_<

  13. I just commented to Sarah this morning... "You know how sometimes you add a cache to your watchlist which is in the middle of the desert, or in a volcano, and you never really expect to see a log... well, guess what?"

You're right about the modest log! I couldn't actually tell is was one of those really hard caches until I noticed "Location: Antarctica".

    Good stuff!

    Stu

Edit: Haha... I have to add - I love the cache ratings: No phone, no restrooms, not wheel chair accessible. Buy hey - at least there aren't any poison plants there! <_<

  14. Roll on shorter nights so you can cache until 10 at night... :D:D

Get yourselves over to Finland. We were caching late one evening last summer, using daylight only - no torch - and went to sign the log. The conversation between me and Sarah went something like this:

    Ok... what date is it?

    16th of june.

    What time?

    23:58

Erm, OK... maybe we should be heading back to our hotel...

    :D
