  1. There is a macro, no longer supported by the developer, that would put a portion of the cache information into a Map 60 CSX as point of interests, several entries required for many caches. You can get some of the info onto your gps this way, but the surest way to get all the info on a cache page is to also carry a Palm or similar device. The macro is next to useless on multi-caches as it does not recognize the clues for waypoints and thus leaves you blind. If I see requests in this thread, I can go try to find the links. Edit to add: Found the link for the macro on a post by Motorcyclemama, I remind you that you will be loading multiple waypoints for most caches, and they will go into your unit as points of interest, not caches. If all you want is the hint, see jssearchers post above this one. http://gsak.net/board/index.php?showtopic=8932
  2. In regard to Touchstone's post, an additional benefit to that suggestion is the Land Manager is now aware of GeoCaching and appreciative of the cachers for the clean-up help. May open more opportunities for good hides in your area.
  3. Let's not add any more work for the mods. They are contributing their time and efforts, it is not right to dump the world on them. To verify a traveler is missing requires a live visit to the cache. Some may not see a traveler present and make that comment, others just don't bother looking for them. Let the cache owner make a maintenance visit and do the verify and posting.
  4. There are a few things to keep in mind around livestock. Bulls often react based on hormones or scent. Bovines are often nothing more than curious, or perhaps they look at people as a food source as when the farmer/rancher drives out. Livestock don't have hands, a nudge is one method they use to "test" the curious item. Cows will generally not nudge as hard as a goat. These are animals, they don't think like we do. If you have a dog with you, many animals may see you as more of a threat, perceiving the dog as a predator. There is no need to be afraid of animals, but you do need to respect their space. If crossing a field of cows, wave your arms and call at them as if herding. They will generally move. Avoid pastures with bulls as they will often seek to verify the pecking order.
  5. I don't care how irate they get, if you didn't smudge the log sheet in some way you didn't find it. I will allow exceptions if I need to replace a wet log and they remind me of that, or if they leave a calling card instead of scrawl.
  6. The main thing to remember if buying regular alkaline batteries is to purchase from a store that sells a lot of them. No reason to spend money on old batteries that have lost half their life on the shelf.
  7. I just thought someone was trying to up your skills by increasing the difficulty level a small bit.
  8. Bill, I took the liberty of checking on what you did with the trackables, and as an owner of a few I see no problem. You did do a discover on the one instead of a retrieve, but that is no big deal as the software still corrected the traveler's position when you dropped it. It just showed as in the last cache for an extra few hours instead of in your possession. Glad you thought to question and make sure of what you were doing. Welcome to the madness. errrrr game.

  10. Download your PQ to your computer, then just drag and drop on the GSAK icon to open it. Parse and filter to your heart's content. When finished, at the top of the GSAK tool bar look for "GPS", it is toward the right. Click "setup", and highlight your particular unit (Colorado 400t). Close this box, click "GPS" again, then "send waypoints". On this screen set up what you wish in regard to child waypoints, macro for name generation (see the GSAK forums for info), leave maximum waypoints blank as you are working within a filter, how many of the last logs you want to see, and you can clear all waypoints on your unit by checking the "clear GPS" box if you so desire. Press send when you are done and your unit is cabled to your 'puter. In the future, you can just go straight to "send". Hope this helps. Edit: I referenced the wrong unit and corrected that.
  11. Most of the Garmin Nuvi series will easily load with your caches by putting them on the memory chip. You can set your preferences to have them shown on the map or just look up the closest few in the memory. Loading the chip is not hard if you use GSAK or the Garmin POI loader. You will still want to load your 60 for the close in work.
  12. I feel there may be some credence to this study, as I am convinced that some in the administration offices of my employer require use of technology to find their way to the little room down the hall.
  13. No guidelines will ever improve the ingenuity of a hide or the deviousness of the hider. And I imagine that there will always be those who keep score or "cache for the numbers" instead of caching for relaxation or just to have fun. Face it, there will always be anal type As in every sport or profession. (granted, sometimes that can be good). Let's face it, there is not a true way to grade the hide except by eyeballing the map to see if it is in a shopping center parking lot or a park. Then decide.
  14. At that price! Grab it for resale if nothing else. You could destroy it playing in the woods and not be out enough to make you even tear up. Grab it by all means.
  15. Yes. You don't say whether you use GSAK or EasyGPS, but either will work easily. Simply move your PQ into the program, filter as you wish, and send to GPS. One neat feature of GSAK is the polygon filter, which makes it easy to do curved or even serpentine routes by plotting on a map. Unknown which other programs offer this feature.

  18. Not so much revive as replace, yours will be a completely new cache. The cache you indicate shows no finds since March, and cache owners last visit to the site was in June. Pretty safe to say if you are close, visit the site and try to determine why the cache disappeared so you don't make the same mistake. Then, if unable to locate the cache log another DNF and needs archived to bring it to reviewers attention. On the cache page, put yourself as a watcher to receive updates on all new logs, and when it is archived by the powers, you will be notified as well. The location will now be open. This is not a procedure to be abused. If the last logs for a cache are founds, even if the cache hasn't been found in a year or more, it may still be there and available. Finds slow as all the locals get it and only travelers or new to area or sport are left to find.
  19. I go with Chokecherry here, don't inconvenience yourself as it just isn't that important. Remember folks, it is only a game! Write your log indicating that you were second to find, mention the first if you remember who it was, and go on your way.
  20. I would hesitate to replace a cache I didn't find, as how can I be sure it is gone? However, if I find bits and pieces, trinkets and parts of a log the lawnmower spit out, I may place a new container in the spot described. This is followed by an email to the owner with pictures of what was found and of the new cache set at the coords on the page.
  21. Well, if others can own up to these, I can too. Each of them more than once, but I lost count after two so don't ask, OK. (LOL) Folks, let us remember that this is a game, a way to have fun. If you are not having a good time out caching, best to try again another day.
  22. My attitude exactly. Now, if my dispatcher would just get me a load that way before the snow flies, you supply the ride, I buy gas and meal while we find caches.
  23. Two possible ways, first is to press buttons until your fingers tire, or get the cable (usb preferred but serial with an adapter works) and load them in a group with a program like GSAK or EasyGPS, or the loc file right from the cache page. These programs also let you easily filter caches when you get a bunch downloaded.
  24. It is too close to the other to be listed, and you know the other is active. It is in bad condition and and clearly not maintained. The name doesn't come up in a cache search, and the owner's name stated doesn't come up in a search. CITO, and end the confusion. Bonus for you efforts would be anything reusable in your next placement.
  25. Be sure that you have marked the cache as ready on your submission.
