  1. For your next LPC find, why not write a positive and upbeat log such as.... "Great news. In spite of the lack of effort you put into stashing a cache at this location, I am please to report that I have found at least 5 even more lame than this one. Nice job! NOT! But tftc anyway."
  2. Be sure to recalibrate the compass when first starting out. May help with some of that.
  3. Any container that is durable and will seal tightly should to. If a peanut butter or peanut jar, mention of this should be made in the listing for those with allergies. The pretzel container should do nicely but will need to be replaced every year or two as the plastic gets brittle. Camo tape can help slow degredation, but you may wish to leave one side open so the bomb squad can peek in at some locations. Pill bottles with screw-on caps also do for smaller caches. Coffee cans and similar with snap-on lids do not do well as pressure changes will pop those open.
  4. the only problem with the ETrex unit is the lack of files inside, it only takes waypoints. But, the old-fashioned PDA is not being used any longer by so many you can grab one for a song and load cache descriptions there with the right programs. Printing pages for the caches I was going after got expensive really quick. If that is to be your temporary work-around, I used to open a notepad, highlight only the info I truly needed from the cache page, and put several caches on the same sheet that way. The lack of graphics meant only black ink was used, 4-6 caches per side of the page, and you had the margins to take notes.
  5. I had found a cable at Fry's when I needed one, don't remember the maker but it was silver with blue connectors. Possbly Belkin, came with a small CD for drivers.
  6. I once found a never published cache. It was while trying for FTF on GC16REB that the wife and I found a cache and signed off. My original log on the find mentioned the container and the cache owner contacted me with a question. I described what we found. We had been at the correct place, but found the wrong container. When the stray container was retrieved, the puzzle was solved. Container placed but never published. New cache placed within feet of the other. The cache has since been archived due to change of surroundings, and another cache now occupies the area.
  7. Any reason for that? I can understand for cachers that don't have kids..... Something about an old guy walking out there around a bunch of kids they don't know seems to get folks a bit upset, with good cause.
  8. MERRY CHRISTMAS from Texas. It may not be white, but then we won't leave tracks leaving the caches either!
  9. If there is room in the cache for another log, I might add one and let the owner know the wet one is at the bottom. However, with the overabundance of "micro-spew" out there now, there is not room in many containers, so the above is how I handle it. If the cache owner doesn't reply within a month or so, obviously it means nothing to them and the wet log is treated accordingly.
  10. First visit here since the new format, so I reserve comment. Still, it took me a few minutes and a trip to the "help" desk to find a feature that used to be right at the top of the page. Hmmmmmm!
  11. Is this still available? I am looking for a way to get out of going to the in-laws.
  12. Camping section of ChinaMart or a outdoor store. Just a plastic tube that screws shut on an O-ring, designed to hold about 20 of the old kitchen matches. Of course, IMHO, it would be considered a micro and should not be used if the location could conceal a real cache.
  13. May need to just rephrase that a bit. "Last seen in the hands of ##### who claims to have placed it in GC$$$ but not properly logged as such." You can't prove they lost it, although they certainly didn't log it properly if it still reflects in their hands.
  14. Cheap and versatile, for my money I look at the E-Trex series from Garmin.
  15. Just put another out here without taking a day to ask a question. Nice. To clarify, mail the duplicate tag and allow the current holder of the TB to affix it so the TB may continue it's travels.
  16. I don't know if it is coincidental or related, but I find it curious that right near that location Google Earth showed a business called "The Benchmark Company". I thought at first they might even have placed that out there as a business display or draw, but their website indicates they are a market research firm ( http://www.thebenchmarkcompany.net/ )
  17. If you have the duplicate tag, mail it to Europe and keep your baby moving.
  18. Reread the notes section of the original email. Bet it is the same event.
  19. I have had two of the E-Trex series, bought both used and abused them well myself before losing one and the other quit. Don't know about the site, but if you use a credit card you can also hold the transaction in case of problems.
  20. True, neighbor. But in an urban environment, they are less likely to accompany someone as they egress the cache site. As they are less expensive, I do plan on replacement occasionally as I do maintenance. Just part of owning a cache to me. There are a few places where I would agree they are totally inappropriate, but then there are places where any cache would be.
  21. The stores you mention also have lock-n-lock type containers of various sizes. Leave one side uncamoed, particularly on urban caches, in the event the bomb squad needs to peek in with a camera before sending your cache on a never-ending journey into the ionosphere.
  22. Sounds like you are using an automotive type unit, recheck your settings. Also, some units are not set up for true accuracy simply because on a 30 foot wide road, it wasn't needed for the intended purpose. If a hand-held unit, try calibrating the compass.
  23. Having played with the macro for the past couple of months, I am inclined to go along with you. Even with the macro the information is incomplete, multi-cache and mystery/puzzle are still completely unsolvable. I began that quest in the hope of leaving something behind but miss not having a nearly complete description available at times. And it really isn't that difficult to load Cachemate, after all the filter is already set up in GSAK and you just need punch a couple more entries.
  24. As you are not a premium member, you cannot get pocket queries, which would be as many caches as you wish (up to 1000) in a zip file. For the time being, I believe your best bet would be sending each cache's coords to the unit from the cache page. With your unit attached the computer, just click on the "send to my GPS" button. You will need to jot notes or print the page if you want to take more info with you, almost mandatory on multi-caches. After you decide whether you will keep caching, you may wish to become a premium member, it is well worth it.
