............................. and that if the owner has given up and doesn't respond, the ONLY option is to archive. We then rely on a good samaritan to clear up the geolitter.

Any reviewer care to confirm?! cheers!

This is what happened with a cache with me, I was involved with the archiving of a cache, the owner hadn't been on the site for several months. So the reviewers archived it at the landowners request. I hadn't actually visited the cache, but passed on the landowners concerns. I went to the location and removed the cache from the dry stane wall, put it in the bin as it was completely soaked inside and wasn't any use to man nor beast.

The owner is back caching, but has never said anything to me about it, despite myself letting him know what my involvement was. Which is fine in my opinion.

What did I actually get for my good willed efforts?? I was called some rotten things, mainly by a rotten individual, all of the things which can't be repeated where on a not so nice Scottish Geocaching Forum. Why do I say it was not so nice as the person was a moderator and the forum admin let the truly offensive logs with swearing to stay untouched!!

So to sum up, be wary before doing what you believe to be correct.

    <_<:huh::unsure::blink::blink:

I think you should be proud of what you did - the landowner asked for the cache to be removed, and you did so, being open and clear about it along the way... there's absolutely nothing wrong with that AT ALL, and you have helped maintain the reputation of geocaching in a situation where the landowner was probably a little miffed.

I wouldn't hesitate to do the same.

  2. I found a cache near where i live which had been completely vandalised. The container had gone and the contents spread throughout the woods. i e-mailed the owner twice but had no reply. He has not logged anything for a long time.

    What should we do?

Either replace it, or get it archived and then set up your own in the same place!!! The cache owner clearly has lost interest, so you won't be stepping on anyones toes, but you will be doing other cachers a favour.

  3. I went to New York recently and had spotted a cache in Central Park before I went which had disappeared, and been diabled by the cache owner. I emailed him and asked whether he wanted me to replace it, as I was going the be there a couple of days later. I had no reply, so replaced it anyway. I emailed him again when I returned home to say that I had done it and that he could reenable the cache, but still no reply.

Since then it has been found three or four times in quick succession by grateful cachers.

I think it's fine to replace caches, as long as you have tried to contact the owner. If they don't reply, it should be assumed that they are no longer that interested, so they won't be upset with you!!

  4. I used to live in this street whilst at University, and walked past the shark every day... It's an institution in Oxford now.

I'm pretty certain Bill doesn't live in the house anymore - I'm sure it must leak, but since noone is there to notice, I don't think its a problem. It must be tanked or something though, or else the house wouldn't be structurally sound.

This guy definitely didn't go to the cache, or his log would have been significantly different. You couldn't go here without mentioning it!

TFTC - I haven't logged it because I need to go back first, but I've definitely enjoyed remembering my time there.

  5. Cor blimey - monster posting/rant from me on the other page... sorry Lactodorum.

Do you remember before mobile phones? Remember how naked you feel without your mobile now?

I feel completely at a loss when the website is down.... isn't that a little worrying! I don't know what to do with myself!

  6. I paid my membership almost immediately after my first cache. If it weren't for Groundspeak, we wouldn't have the website on which to search for caches - game over. End of.

I happen to use it for downloading GPX files, I use it for bookmarks and notifications. I also use PQ's to search for particular types of caches.

I don't however think that the way I use the website has much to do with whether I pay or not. Geocaching.com is the best resource for caching available, and so we should be prepared to pay for the priviledge. Given that there is a two tier system already with people who pay and those that don't (and my view is that everyone should pay), why don't we have a £5 a year fee for basic membership, and £20 a year for full membership.

These extra funds could be channelled towards making a more reliable site, having a team of people who negotiate with all major landowners in the UK like GAGB but paid for their time so that we get a definitive and comprehensive answer as to where we can and can't place caches and so on...

Let's face it, what other activity can you do, or club can you join that only costs you £15 a year after the initial capital outlay? I reckon that the capital outlay isn't that siginificant either, when you consider how long a GPSR will last you - much longer than a pair of football boots. Rank it alongside Golf, Horse Riding, Climbing, Gliding, Surfing, Sailing, Scuba Diving or even gym membership and it is the cheapest of the lot.

As for the prominent geocacher who doesn't pay to be a member, I must say that I think he has made a huge contribution to caching in the UK - perhaps he should be given free membership, which would be the same for him, but wouldn't set such an example.

I'm starting to rant so I'll stop.... to...... breathe..... and leave you all alone now!!

    <_<

  7. It is frustrating when this happens, and it seems to be happening more often these days...

I for one wouldn't mind paying a slightly higher membership charge to pay for running the site - £15 per year for membership is peanuts really, especially given the time spent doing it! I would be more than happy to ramp it up to £20 or perhaps even higher...

<_< And shame on those of you who haven't paid your membership!! Given that the site is run by volunteers and our fees pay for the hosting etc, membership should really be compulsory.

Semi-rant over  - looking forward to the site being up again.

  8. Hmmm

My list is short, and should be shorter, because I'm cheating - you'll see why.

    Hillhappy1

Wisewol (both together whilst all three of us failed to find)

**Andy** a guy I knew already, who i met up with to go Geocaching

MumboJumbo (saw him caching, but from my office window - subsequently met for a pint or two)

Pamina2006 (my fault she geocaches - I introduced her)

so really, its only two. Mind you, that's one for every fifty.

I'm looking at organising a meet in the midlands not too long in to the New Year, so I hope to meet some more then.

  9. I'm not really too keen on giving away the idea behing the cache - but that's not how the cache is going to be...

    Keep trying!

Large barrel with holes in the sides you fill with water till the correct one floats to the top ?

Hmmm... I think I should rename this thread and get people to guess what my ideas are - it'll get me a whole heap of great ideas to use... say goodbye to my sense of creativity - who needs it when I've got you guys!!!!

It's not that though, by the way. Although I have thought of a water based cache...

The trouble with a "Large Barrel" would be finding a place suitable that would avoid muggles... Easy in the US, or some more remote parts of the UK, but try finding something like that around Birmingham!!!

    Keep Trying.

We have just booked for Mauritius for next March.

According to Google Earth there are only a few caches there so with a bit of luck we will be able to do ALL the caches in the country. (I think that would take some time in the UK)

Has any one else doe all the caches in one country?

    Gordon

I think CurryKev has done all the Caches in Trinidad and Tobago!

    Not me!!!!!

But another trip to Tobago would be nice.

Sorry curryKev - it was Pieman - I must have been getting the foods mixed up!

I was in New York last week - Five Star New York would take five days on its own, let alone with all the others!

I'm off to Rome in May - I wonder how many there are in the Vatican?
