typically I carry a Gerber multi-tool, my son has a leatherman that he carries just for caching. We also have a small mirror on an extendable handle, and a flexible part retrieval tool (about 2 feet long but coils up) that has retractable claws on the end. You can find both of these at a local auto parts store. We have yet to be stymied by a cache or log. (that is, once weve FOUND it )

Shopping for used PDA, need some feedback.
The Laughing Gnomes replied to casuallee67's topic in How do I...?
heres a question Ive been wondering about. I know ppc running windows in PDA comes with media player, and obviously if you get an SD slot you can store lots of mp3s. Does palm have something that would work like this? Basically Im looking for a pda for going paperless, while having the added bonus of being an mp3 player. Thanks, the Laughing Gnomes -

Looking for Container suggestions
The Laughing Gnomes replied to rhelt100's topic in General geocaching topics
You dont mention if these will be waypoints only or if they will have a signable log. If its just a waypoint that has no log maybe one of these, sealed closed with some gorilla glue or silicone caulk? -
Junk In Caches - Vent
The Laughing Gnomes replied to cachefam59's topic in General geocaching topics
We have run maintenance on caches that weve found in the past. If the container is damaged/open we do our best to repair (usually with a note to the placer) If its just full of trash, we will clear it all out and restock it from our own trade stash. (trash includes rocks, grass clippings, twigs, pennies, broken mccrap, etc) Tracts, postcards, buisness cards etc usually (but not always) are ruined if they arent at the least baggied, so we usually end up having to clear them out anyways. If they are still in good shape we typically put them in a new baggie with any non-laminated sig cards etc. Bottom line is this: Even if you dont trade, try and leave the cache in better shape then when you found it -
For a couple of months there the Mrs and I worked at our local airport. (Detroit Metro) Weve met and served cruddy food to: The US olympic womens basketball team Smokey Robinson Jackie Chan The Rock Most of the Detroit Pistons 2006 Ted Nugent Meg Ryan George Bush Sr (and entorage) (didnt serve them but we got to see em) Aaliyah (singer, actress from Queen of The Damned movie) R Kelly (spacejam singing guy) While out caching, not a soul. Weve met lots of other cachers out and about but none that would be considered celebrity. Although they are famous in local circles

Recently in our area a cacher from a neighboring community (read that as 15-20 mins down the interstate) has been releasing quite a few caches. Now for some details 1) the cacher is from an area that is cache deficient in the first place 2) the caches are all in more suburban areas where hide spots are harder to find(fewer parks, etc) 3) the caches are all placed in an area much more heavily covered then their home town 4) the caches are all micros Heres my question, and yes I do actually want input, Im not just ranting. Knowing what Ive listed above..... Why? I mean why not place them closer to home location? Why cover areas where local cachers would find easier to maintain? Why cover areas where hides are harder to find to begin with? Why travel to a staturated area and place even more micros? Thanks, The Laughing Gnomes

My geoarsenal.. what is yours?
The Laughing Gnomes replied to rbennitt's topic in General geocaching topics
I gotta say... the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch would be a blessing to carry with me in case I run into those pesky rabbits. But... alas, there aren't that many Holy Hand Grenades of Antioch. Since most of my caching these days is done with a 9 month old... I usually carry the following: GPSr PDA Nalgene bottle Bottle with nipple Water Powdered formula Extra Batteries Extra Diapers Wipes Trash bag for CIPO (Cache in Poop Out) Extra onsie (for him... not for me, although if they made them in my size... hmmmm....) Knife (usually just a leatherman, but sometimes a K-Bar) Bug spray Sun block Various teething toys Extra socks Stuffed toy moose/or cow Jeep Overland Stroller iPod Extra pens/pencils AHHAAHAHHAHAHA CIPO! -

I once saw a cache that was hidden under what was termed "bark-o-flage" in the middle of what seemed like a 12 acre area of poison ivy -
Whats the record?
The Laughing Gnomes replied to Bundyrumandcoke's topic in General geocaching topics
Yes but now weve forgotten the question. So long and thanks for all the fish... (wonders if Im the only one that caught this) -
If you are a premium member you can change a setting to have GC email you when new caches get published. Some of the die hard FTFers even have those emails sent directly to their cell phones so they are notified the instant the email comes through.

Puzzle Encryption Methods
The Laughing Gnomes replied to VeryLost's topic in General geocaching topics
I just decoded one using Vigenere and have seen many other puzzle types out there. Im honestly not the best puzzler but Im interested in learning, so what better way then to try and solve some. Besides we gnomes have a reputation to uphold and our own hides should be fairly tricky to locate. The Laughing Gnomes -
GPS, personal journal, calculator(for puzzle caches), extra pencils and spare log book (in case the caches' is full), extra baggies, swag items of course, extra batteries, BUG SPRAY (good lord the mosquitos are bad this year), leather gloves, small headlamp, just picked up a mechanics mirror last night for those "not so sure I wanna reach in there yet" spots, multi tool, and lots of water. what knife/flashlights do you carry?
The Laughing Gnomes replied to MistrettaA's topic in General geocaching topics
Daily carry - Gerber 450 EZ-Out knife, Gerber multi tool (I have used this thing nearly every day for 3 years, thank god for good multi-tools), Kershaw Ken Onion 1560ST knife. The car always has a 3D maglight. Cache bag - Petzel MYO XP headlamp (I gotta reccomend this lamp its a great lil light). I USED to carry a mini-mag every day, but broke it and just havent picked up a new one yet. The Laughing Gnomes -

Anyone get depressed by certain DNF's?
The Laughing Gnomes replied to Kabuthunk's topic in How do I...?
We normally dont log a DNF if we dont find it on our first visit, IF there are extenuating circumstances. Like....it was to dark and no flashlight, it started raining when pulled up, there was a policemans picnic going on 75 ft from ground zero (this happened 2 days ago), didnt bring appropriate clothing for the terrain, etc. The reason we dont log DNF in these cases is that we didnt actually get a chance to LOOK. But we always try and go back to those places when we can to actually complete. We currently have 2 traditionals and 2 multis (completed up to the last stage) that are in limbo waiting for us to get back to them. We also go back and update our DNFs and notes once we have actually found it to help clean up our trail of ramblings... The Laughing Gnomes -
