Does anyone know what they're like - you can't tell much from the photos. Bill
  2. For the benefit of newcomers, perhaps it's worth pointing out that this is an extremely ancient thread which has become active again. You can get a full list of UK cachers from the Cache Stats page at this site: http://www.geocacheuk.com/ There are quite a few of us now! Bill
  3. Not tonight, but I was this afternoon. A multicache on top of a hill fort. The wind, oh the wind, I could hardly keep my feet sometimes. And the cooooold... I'm sorry to say I abandoned it and went back to the car. Bill
  4. Faye & Brad wrote: quote: there is a think blanket of snow outside now! Is that somewhere between thick and thin, then? OK, I'll leave now... Bill
  5. MCL wrote: quote: I don't need rechargeable batteries in my torch...I always leave it at home! I haven't left mine at home since the day when the cache took much longer than I'd expected, darkness fell, and I had to find my way back to the car using the backlight on my GPSr - now that IS heavy on batteries! Bill
  6. It's great to see those stats back! Thanks to all concerned, not least Elias. Bill

That's the Ring of Brodgar, North Orkney. And hello Andy from someone who's been using your site for a long time (and not to find hiding places for caches!)
  8. Nobody's posted to the UK forum for an hour - perhaps it really is just me here... Lunch must be in one of those boxes...
  9. Mopar seems to have gone - now it's only me. Lunch must be in one of those boxes...
  10. You might be on your own, but I've got company. According to the list there's me and Mopar here. Actually the same thing happened a few weeks ago, and led to a long string of postings by all those lonely people... Lunch must be in one of those boxes...
  11. I told you not to leave the windows open. Lunch must be in one of those boxes...

Currently showing everything unread since 8pm in spite of logging off and closing the browser several times. Yes, I've just tried that and I'm getting much the same - everything unread since 9.32 our time (1.32 site time). Lunch must be in one of those boxes...
  13. Thanks T & J for the links - I'd done some searches before posting but missed these. I've got a much clearer idea of the position now. Lunch must be in one of these boxes...

  15. As a comparative newbie (yes, I've seen the postings about the term!) I'm not really clear about the whole matter of getting permission before placing a cache. What do people in the UK actually do regarding getting the permission of a landowner before placing a cache? I've read the rules, but I've formed the impression (perhaps wrongly) that in the UK anyway the rules aren't always followed to the letter. (I've also read Tim & June's new thread and Team Blitz's recent posting on related things). I'd like to know whether you always get the permission of a landowner, or only do so in some cases, or none at all. And when/if you get permission, how do you go about it? Letter, phone call, email? And, if necessary, how do you find out who owns the land?
  16. With regard to anyone retrieving the travel bug if it's still there, the asbestos is apparently in the hospital buildings, but the cache is in the grounds, so surely asbestos shouldn't be a problem for anyone collecting or handling the TB.
  17. One of my websites started getting visitors coming from this site called www.geocaching.com ...
  18. Thanks for the answers! I've had something like this happen once on my MLR SP24 and it REALLY puzzled me.
  19. quote:Treebeard (Pid) wrote: Tonights program seemed rather vague, especially with the Cod fishing, I dont think Caching is the main story of the program and can forsee them only playing several bits..... Could be proved wrong, hope I am.! There was a trailer for the program after the BBC1 lunchtime news today, and it was entirely geocaching. It certainly gave the impression that gc is the main item.
  20. I don't believe any of you exist. I've been the only one here for hours now.
  21. I don't see any problem with this. I found my first five or so geocaches without a GPSr, by finding the general location from a large scale map then using whatever clues I could glean from the cache page. In other words doing something not unlike what the cache in question requires. And I found it very enjoyable - if I hadn't then I wouldn't now have a GPSr. For me the GPSr is a means to an end - the pleasure is in the place and the hunt.
  22. I can't get the poll to work. I've voted then clicked on "Results" and the page says no votes have been counted so far. I've tried this three times.
  23. I agree. I've just had to edit a log minutes after entering it, and not for the first time either! And now I've edited this posting too!
  24. I don't know whether it's connected, but I've had trouble getting the UK map page on and off for some time now. Sometimes it loads, and zooms in ok, but sometimes it just times out again and again. It's been like that for the last few hours as I write.
