  1. I would love to rent a scooter and head off to a "nearby" cache. Not sure exactly what a "5 & 5" cache is, but it sounds like what we've been looking for. Practically all of the caches we've seen in the Caribbean are driving distance from the harbour, and aren't close enough to the tourist attractions to be combined with an excursion. Guess I'll keep looking since it seems that it is possible based on other people's experience
  2. Thanks BlueDeuce and yorelken for your excellent advice. It never occured to me to contact a member who visited a cache for their advice. I checked GC.com for caches that appear to be at the dock for the islands we are thinking about visiting, but I only found one in Grand Caymen. We are torn between the "Colon, Panama-Limon, Costa Rica-Belize" or "Grand Caymen-Cozumel-Belize-Costa Maya" itineries. If you have visited caches in these ports I would love to hear about them. Thanks again for your suggestions.
  3. Every March my hubby and I pack our bags and head out on a Carribean or Hawaiian cruise to celebrate our wedding anniversary and warm our bones. Since we have been turned on to caching this year and are *almost* addicts, we were wondering if anyone has combined these two past times. Our concern is mainly transportation getting to the caches and safety while wandering the wilds of the islands. There is a little information available on Google, and GC.com lists some caches. We were wondering if anyone has done this and what their experience has been. Thanks!
  4. I just ordered two of the coins. I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of such a legendary cacher. Although we never met we "spoke" in the forum. He was really nice and very helpful. I wish his family a speedy recovery of their injuries. Thanks for the opportunity to support such a worthy cause.
  5. The Bullfrog Eh-Team necks in the woods closer to Arrowhead (50 km.) But, the bears are very chosey about the taste of geocachers. Usually they (the geocachers) reek of 'Deet'; and aren't considered as special fare. Your bushwacking experience is par for the course in this end of 'Central Ontario'. As you get closer to 'The Geocaching Capital of Canada' the experience get more bush-ie. Yesterday, the Bullfrog Eh-Team found 6 cahes in only 6 hours - and only put 275 km. on the geo-mobile. Some sort of record for us! So, basically, if I take a deet shower and am my usual non-stop chatty self, I'll pretty much drive all those nice little black bears away? That certainly sounds doable. Congratulations on your finds! And for setting another personal record. *275 km is quite painful at $108/ltr*
  6. It is a great country! I think I had better get out a good atlas and "remind" myself of exactly where I live in Canada. Hubby and I are going on a camping trip at the end of August and plan to do some geocaching. We'll be staying in Arrowhead, Oastler and Fairbanks. Isn't Fairbanks around your neck of the woods Bullfrog Eh-Team? Aren't there a lot of bears around there? Any reports of Geocachers getting attacked by bears recently? I'm not a very big geocacher. Hubby is also going to Nfld in August and he is dropping off a new TB at the Atlantic with a mission of reaching the Pacific. Just before he leaves we'll check our vicinity to see if there are any TB's that can hitch a ride with him. We went out this past weekend for our first time ever with our trusty GPS and our four-legged friend. We had a great time and found 3 out of the five we had set out to find. One of them we bushwacked for at least fifteen minutes, in and out of trees and bushes and tall grass before finally giving up. We convinced ourselves that the cache was missing only to come home and find that someone else had found the cache later in the day. We'll have to try that one again with a bit more experience under our belts. Happy caching!
  7. Thanks danoshimano for your recommendations! I noted the trails you suggested and will do them in the order they are listed. I will also join the central ontario geocachers today, as well. So I guess that means I now live in central Ontario? I never realized that before you mentioned it. I lived in Southern Ontario for 41 years and just moved up here a year ago. Hmmm...
  8. Hi all, Hubby and I are planning to head out on our first adventure as soon as our new GPS arrives, which will probably be next weekend. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good cache for a first timer. We live in the Barrie/Angus area and don't want to travel more than 100 km. We are looking for something not too hard, kinda on the easy side of things since my hubby is trying out a new knee brace as well and he's too big to carry, lol. I also have some really great swag to trade and a new TB to release into the wild!
  9. I just ordered 3 of the copper geosquid coins. I can't wait to get them! I'm going to give one to my geocaching nephew for his birthday and I just know he is going to love it. The BIG question is....wherever am I going to begin my squids travels? I am just waiting for my new GPS to arrive and then I'll be off on my first adventure.
  10. Thanks for the insight into the pocket knives. It's been a long time since I had a youngster around and I guess I just didn't think. Sure wouldn't want anyone to get hurt.
  11. I'm a newbie and am just learning the game. I have actually done way more researching than geocaching but I am hoping to get out on the trails a lot more once my new GPS comes... Anyway, I was in the dollar store the other day and saw some really great penlite flashlights and pocket knives that would be really easy to engrave my member name on them. Of course it would be a pretty amateurish engraving job but I was thinking that these could be pretty useful items to keep in a backpack. Your thoughts on these items would be appreciated.
