The list is a little out of date. Since the APE cache has been archived, it doesn't show up on the PQ search.
The Original Stash Cache is now numero uno. But I do have 4 of the top 5....... -

One thing to remember is that this cache is in a national forest, and one can't just go putting a plaque there without government approval. I remember when the tunnel was closed, some "cachers" jumped the fence and went to the cache anyway. That caused some ill will between GS and TPTB. That may have even factored into the decision to archive it rather than replace it. Yes, it's gone, but it will be remembered as one of the iconic caches of all times. There are other caches that are just as meaningful. Heck, head to Kansas and get Mingo......

All the CO has to do is contact Groundspeak, either through email, snail mail or telephone. My brother tried to adopt one in southern Oregon that the CO had not been online for over 6 years, but GS would not allow him to since they couldn't verify that the CO would okay it. Obviously he wasn't in the game anymore but without some form of communication, GS wouldn't let it transfer.
If a cache is disabled, then it is still possible for the CO to allow it to be adopted by someone.
How is a CO going to allow someone else to adopt their cache if their account is inactive? It would seem to me that an account with an inactive status be be prevented from logging in to access the "Adopt a Cache" form.

Yes, they do. If you look at folks who have found more than one APE cache, they have the same icon. But the souvenier is only for the one in Washingon, I believe.

If a cache is disabled, then it is still possible for the CO to allow it to be adopted by someone. But if it is archived, then it is almost impossible to adopt it. I've only seen that happen once and it was a long process, since the CO was deceased. Putting a watch on this cache would answer any questions on how long before it is archived, and how.
Oh okay that makes sense. The cacher contacts GS to have their account disabled and when done the system automatically disables their cache(s). My one question is why disable and not archive? The CO cannot adopt since their profile is wiped out and the reviewer will eventually archive it, why not save them a step?
To the OP it looks like you have a spot and a fully functional cache that can be soon relisted under your name.

So are caches that are in perfectly good shape now being eliminated by gs?
I realize this one is only disabled, but all that means is the local reviewer will probably archive it after a while.
In a situation like this, the CO is not available, for whatever reason. It could be they have health issues, or may even have passed away, and someone has told Groundspeak about this. Who knows. Why not drop the CO a line and see what the reason is?

A really shame this was archived, I would argue strongly that this one should be replaced as I was one of the caches that one day hoped to make the journey to the cache. It may be too late now to replace the cache, but possible not; it could be unachieved. But what I think could be a better solution is the placement of a log able plaque with the souvenir and icon.
I have set up a post on the Groundspeak get satisfaction forum to this effect.
I support the idea of a logable plaque. What does it need to make this happen?
There is a plaque at the original cache location in Oregon. It was placed with Groundspeak's approval for distance since there is another cache about 50 feet from it. It usually has an ammo can near by for swag and trackables. But even as a plaque that cache gets muggled several times a year. I've taken friends to it many times, and it seems each time the adoptive CO has had to replace and move it. I've placed TBs there that have disappeared after being dropped there. I agree that a plaque at the APE site is a good idea, maybe as a virtual of sorts. But if you make it a virtual, then the problem will be with armchair logging of it. I know many of the grandfathered virtual caches are being archived for that very reason. What would be nice would be to have a plaque there, along with the plaque at the original cache, and the log book at the headquarters. Make it a virtual multi cache?? Have to visit the first two and then sign the log book at HQ to get the special icon. That would prevent armchair logging, and keep the triad alive.

Sadly, the APE cache was archived this evening. Here is what Mou10Bike posted in the cache log tonight:
"After careful deliberation with Jeremy, Bryan and others, I've decided that the best course of action with this cache is to archive it. I'll be sad to see it go; needless to say I've become rather familiar with the location over the last 10 years!
Many thanks for all of the great logs posted to this cache over the years, and my most sincere apologies to those who wanted to visit it but were denied the chance."

I have an Oregon 550t, and enjoy the Wherigo caches. But I am wondering if there is a limit to the number of cartridges that can be stored on the unit. I travel quite a bit, and like to store quite a few of them on my unit. But I'm finding that when I add more than 15 or so, they don't appear in the menu. So I'm wondering if there is some sort of cap. Just curious.

When you want to use an unlock code for a Wherigo, it will given to you at the completion of the cache on your device. When you have reached the last stage, it should tell you that, and then give you the code whicd you can then enter on the website. Not all Wherigo caches have that step in them, so you would need to upload the saved game to the site.
If you are looking for the saved game, you need to hook your Garmin to your computer (I am assuming that you have a Windows based PC) via a usb cable. That will allow your Oregon and it's associated microSD card (if you are using one) to be seen under My Computer as drives. If you open the Garmin drive, you will see a folder called Wherigo. If you open that folder you will see the installed cartridges and a folder called Saved Games or something like that. If you open that folder you will see your saved game there, under the same title as the cartridge is named. It will only be there once, and it will be the most recent saved one. Then what you do is go to the Wherigo.com site, find that cartridge, and select the upload saved game. The resulting screen will let you browse to the folder where your save game is, and then you can select it for upload. You have to keep in mind that some Wherigo authors don't code the cartridge correctly, and your save game will not appear. I just did a brand new one here in Oregon called Clue Beaverton (actually got the FTF on it!), and followed it through all the way to signing the log. But I never got the saved game message, nor the unlock code. I contacted the CO, and he corrected that error. So now I can go back, do it again and get the data I need to be able to log it on Wherigo.com.

HI, I'M TOTALLY NEW TO THE Wherigo CACHES AND HAVE COMPLETED 2 OF THEM. THE FIRST WHEN I TRIED TO UNLOCK THE CARTRIDGE ON THE Wherigo WEBSITE COULDN'T LOCATE THE FILE. I THOUGHT PERHAPS WE DIDN'T SAVE THE GAME WHEN FINISHED AND THAT WAS THE PROBLEM. THIS WEEKEND DROVE A WAYS AWAY TO DO ANOTHER AND MADE A POINT TO SAVE THE GAME WHEN FINISHED, JUST TRIED TO UNLOCK THE CARTRIDGE AND IT CAN'T FIND IT.
THIS IS WHAT I'M DOING, I'VE GOT MY GARMIN HOOKED UP TO THE COMPUTER AND AM GOING TO THE Wherigo WEBSITE AND I'M CLICKING ON THE UNLOCK TAB, FINDING THE Wherigo UNDER MY GARMIN ON MY COMPUTER BUT IT SAYS :AN ERROR OCCURED AND THE FILE IS UNREADABLE:
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS WHAT I'M DOING WRONG? I CAN'T GET THE CODE TO UNLOCK OUR CARTRIDGE.

Maps seem to be missing from when looking at caches. Not just in PQs but any cache. I assume this is a momentary glitch?? Started about 20 minutes ago...

Unless it's been recently changed, the My Finds PQ does count agains your 5/day limit.
You can create many (unlimited) pocket queries, you can only have 40 saved on your pocket query page at any given time.
You can only run 5 pocket queries in one day (not counting the My Finds pocket query). I don't find any Knowledge Book article that says differently.

I just verified that the problem still is there when I preview in the map mode (this time is was a cache in Bodga Bay California GC9C) but when I load the gpx onto my Garmin Oregon 550t, it does not show up. So the glitch appears to be site related, and is not really using that "phantom" cache. It also appears to that "phantoms" appear to be older caches, with only 4 or 5 digits in them. But then who knows what evil lurks in them..... the phantom knows.....

ivhs72, just to verify.. this only happens when you "preview on map", correct? If you have a GPX file sent to you the data is correct?

I just ran my PQ for Portland Oregon, and each time I ran it, it came up with an off the wall, out in the middle of nowhere cache. I ran it several times, and tweaked the configuration several times, and it came up with differnet caches each time, once in Germany, once in Ft. Worth, one in Fire Island on the east coast, and one north of PDX near Mt. St. Helens. At this point in time the PQ is totally unreliable since I can't trust it to give me accurate results. FWIW, this PQ ran just fine yesterday with no problems. Very Frustrating.

I'm still working on the cache that shows up in the middle of no where.. I have yet to reproduce this issue in an environment where I can do it repeatedly

My experience with alkaline AA batteries was that the backlight and sounds on my Oregon GPS would fade when they reached 50% of the battery indicator. Sometimes that would be only a few hours. With Lithium Ion, I can go several hours and the backlight and sounds last till the indicator is in the red. They last longer as well. True they are more expensive initially, but with the ability to recharge them, and how long they last, they are cheaper than alkaline. I got a charger and 4 batteries for $12, and then an extra set of batteries for $7. I carry two in the GPS and two spare sets and that will last me a couple of excursions. Your mileage may vary but for me it lithium all the way.

Many times railroads consider their property to be totally private. Where I live, there is one small company that hires private security guards to patrol their tracks. The reason for that is that it is used as a bikeway/jogging path since it very rarely has train on it. They make it very clear to not tresspass.

I just installed it using the Garmin updater on their website. Took about 10 minutes start to finish. Read the instructions carefully, as it says to wait for the device to restart on its own, or you can damage it. But there is an asterik next to it, and it says at the bottom for Oregon's to power it on yourself. Everything seems to be working fine so far. Five day road trip coming up, we'll see what happens.

2) Have you considered Topo 24K West? Right now you are looking into City Navigator to get auto-routing on streets. Topo 24k West gives you exactly that + routing on trails + more detailed maps when being out there. Furthermore it is not locked to one unit. Of course it covers only OR, WA, CA and NV, but if you don't travel beyond that it certainly would be worth looking into it.

Just coming back from vacation. YES, I'm sure. I own the DVD.
I've been told by Garmin that the only maps that they lock are the City Navigator. Go figure. I found that out when I tried to load my CN 2009 onto my Oreon 550t and found it locked to my old Oregon 300. Had to buy a new one. But I could use the topo maps if I wanted to.

Maybe at different zoom levels there are different amounts of detail displayed. Try zooming in to see if more street names are displayed. At wider zoom levels the screen couldn't display every street name on the map without making everything unreadable.
I should have clarified, I've already tried that. I've played around with zoom levels and have it set to the level I've had the most luck with. Also, I played with the settings and made sure detail level is set to max. It still does it though... I'll try what Splashy suggested and see if that helps.
I have a Kenwood DX512 touch screen unit in my Saturn VUE, and have the Garmin GPS add-on to it. That does give me a warning of approaching streets no matter what level of zoom I'm in. That is a written indication, not audible. But that is only the next street as you appoach it, not every surrounding street.

I know the Garmin Oregon can use a 4 Gb Micro SD card because I have one in mine, but I was just wondering if this was the largest one it could utilize or if it could also use an 8 Gb? I assume you could use an 8 Gb in it, but can it only address the first 4 gigs?
I have a 16gb one in my 550t, works great. Lots of room for pictures. It sees it as a full 16gb, not 4 or 8. It also worked in my 300 when I had it as well.

The original stash cache was granted an exception to the distance guidelines to be placed so close to the un-original stash. But that is on private property, not national forest land like the APE is/was. I don't think the issue would be with the actual plaque, but getting forest service apporval to place it there. Relations between TPTB and the forestry people have been strained in the past, especially after the tunnel was closed and some cachers decided to jump the fence and use it anyway.
