Are the PQ's downloaded from the GC server or from an email?

Are they edited by some other software before loading them to the GPSMAP 66?

I find my GPSMAP 66 units are very speedy indexing new GPX files, especially compared to previous Garmin products. A few minutes at most, usually less.

I download my PQs directly from Groundspeak, then unzip and store on a directory on my PC. Then I drag'n' drop to my device which is connect to my computer via USB. I have about 70 PQs that I download, and the oldest one I copy is 7 days old.

I'm having a little trouble understanding you here. It sounds like you want to edit the hiking dashboard data fields, which you can not. In fact, there is no Hiking Dashboard.

No Garmin GPSr has ever allowed the user to edit data fields that are part of a dashboard, other than the actual Data Field dashboards. And, any editing of these data fields is unique to the currently active profile by design.

All data fields in either the Large Data Field Dashboard or Small Data  Field Dashboard are fully customizable on the GPSMAP 66.

I suspect there is some functionality confusion here.

It really sounds like you may be referring to Profiles, and each Profile settings are unique. When you create a new profile, the current settings are copied to the new profile, and you can change them as desired after.

What I'm meaning to say is that I would like to edit the data fields on the Geocache Dashboard. When it opens, and I'm going towards a cache, it shows compass heading and distance to destination. I've always liked a pointer for direction, as well as distance. On the older units I've (including the 64s/64sc devices), I've been able to select 2 or 4 data fields, and then select what I want in those data fields. I've not found a way to do that with the 66s. Is it possible to do that?

You are doing something wrong. My GPSMAP 66 units both have zero issues loading PQs, which are listed in the GCLive List menu on the device.

All these bugs really sounds like to me you are running an older firmware version.

    What version is that?

I have version 2.50 which is what Garmin told me was the latest.

Also the Lists that are on Geocaching Live are more than PQs. They also have the Lists that I have made to show that I have met the requirements for challenge caches. For example, we have an Oregon Cemetery challenge that you have to visit 100 Oregon cemeteries. I have a list showing those caches. That shows up in Geocaching Live. But some of the PQs that I have do not show up there. That was my point.

  4. Sorry to be away from the forum so long, but I wasn't getting any updates that replies were being made, else I would have responded.

I am using the latest firmware update, 2.50. That was released when I first contacted Garmin about the problems I'm having. That is the version I have installed. If there's a newer one, Garmin Express doesn't notify me when I connect to the computer.

As for loading my geocaches. I've always used the drag'n'drop method with my older Garmin units. I download my PQs (always the most recent ones), unzip them to my geocaching folder on my computer. I then connect the 66s via USB to my computer (PC, not Mac), and open the Garmin>GPX folder, and then drag all the PQs to that folder. It's always worked that way in the past, now it is not. When I turn on the 66s, it hangs on the Loading Waypoints screen, and the progress bar does not move.

I've been working with Garmin support on this. I have reset the device to factory setting several times, and tried loading lists Geocaching Live. Those do load successfully, and the 66s does boot. I use the Geocache Dashboard. When I select the Map, it shows the closest geocache that is on the device. If I select another cache, either by moving the pointer on the map, or from the Geocache app, it does let me select it. I can call up the cache, look at the D/T rating, read the description, etc. I then select GO, and it brings up the compass and distance data fields. If I decide that I want do not want to go after that cache, I hit the menu button, and the top selection is Stop Navigation. When I select Stop Navigation, the unit powers down after 4-5 seconds. that happens whether I've loaded the PQ from my computer, or from Geocaching Live.

I have some other issues that I'll mention in another post, to keep this from getting too long.

  5. I've had my 66s since it was available, and I have to admit, I wish I had kept my 64sc. This device is so buggy that I can't use it reliably for geocaching. I've been working with Garmin support for over a month now, and am about to take it back to REI, and use their generous return/exchange policy.

The issues I'm having now seem to be software related. The biggest one is that I cannot load pocket queries. I have always loaded them the same way, since my Oregon 300, by dragging and dropping them to the device. When I do that with the 66s, it takes forever (and I mean hours) to get past the update waypoint, tracks, etc, screen (the one with the progress bar). Sometimes it won't get past that.

When I am able to load a geocache, and start looking for one, after I've found one, and move on to the next one, the maps will not display on the screen. All I have is a direction arrow and a blue screen with a cursor. The maps I have on the 66s are the City Navigator, 24k Western States Topo, and the 100k USA Topo, all Garmin products. Today I removed all the pocket queries I have on it, and power cycled the device. When I turned it on, all the caches were still there....even though the files were not on the device....go figure.

Another glitch I've found is that if I'm searching for a cache, and decide to stop navigating to it, when I select the Stop Navigation command from the Geocache Dashboard menu, it turns the 66s off. I am able to duplicate that every time. Very frustrating.

The lack of ability to customize the data fields is also not good. The preloaded dashboards are all different from each other. If you customize one, say the hiking one, and you then select another one, all the customization that you made does not migrate to the new dashboard. I could accept that if I could program the data fields........

I've had some luck in using Geocaching Live, but the main drawback there is it only looks for Lists, not pocket queries. So I can't download all the queries I have....very frustrating......

For the record, I've used Garmins for over 10 years, starting with the Oregon 300, then 450, 550, 650, 700, and GPSMAP 62, 64st and 64sc. FWIW, IMHO, the 66s is a downgrade........

I'm calling REI now to see if I can arrange to swap this for another unit....or downgrade to a more reliable 64........

  6. I went to run a Found Caches PQ today (the one that can be run every 3 days). It says that I've found zero caches. When I look at the top of page, where it shows my user name, it shows zero finds. But my profiles shows everything normal, with the correct number of finds. What's happening??

  7. Do you use lists? Why or why not?

Yes, I use lists. It's a convenient way to track some of the cache types I'm hunting for.

How do you currently use lists? Why do you put caches on lists? Are there list related tasks that are tough to do?

I use bookmark lists to keep track of challenge cache requirements, to track certain types of caches that I want to find. It's also a great way to store caches that I specifically want to find when I go into a geographic area.

Watch lists are invaluable in terms of new caches, as well as when caches are archived or disabled/enabled. I would change the interface to allow actual texts to be sent to phones, rather than having to use my carrier's email (ie, xxx.xxx.xxxx@carrier.com)

How would you like to use lists? Is there functionality that is missing that would improve your experience? (Feel free to think outside current offerings. ie: collaborate on it with a friend, download to your GPS, etc)

I would dearly love to see the Ignore list expanded to include caches by individual CO's. There are some CO's whose caches are pure garbage, and it would be nice to be able to add them to an ignore list, rather than have to limit their 500 or 600 or however many caches individually.

  8. One thing to keep in mind is that not all CO's use a cell phone when they are placing a cache. I use my handheld GPSr when I've placed mine, since it's more accurate. Living in the NW, it's assumed that urban caching you'll have cell signal. But when you're hiking in the Columbia River Gorge, or the side of Mt. Hood, you more than likely will not have cell service. You might be able to make a phone call, but your data network won't work. I'm with Sprint, and have pretty good coverage.

I'm getting ready to go backpacking this weekend in the Ocala National Forest in Florida. I'd love to do some geocaching but an not sure if there will be cell phone signal where we'll be. From what I understand cell signal is spotty in this area. I was thinking it would be nice if there was a way for people to let others know if a cell signal is available on the geocache's info page. Obviously there are different carriers that would complicate it a bit. But I'm assuming as smart phones become more common that more and more are using them to geocache.

  9. Is anyone having problems adding favorite points to caches? I've just logged my caches from last weekend, and there were several that I wanted to give a favorite to. But I can't add them. I click on favorites, click on add to your favorites and it shows it added it and increments it by one number. But when I come back to the page, it shows that it didn't register. Is there a bug in the system somewhere?

  10. I don't see this ever happening. If a cacher lives in an area where they have to travel 161 miles for a single cache, then that cache must have some significance other than a daily streak. It could be for another challenge, such as the jasmer, or to fulfill a certain challenge cache. Or there are so few caches in their area that they have to drive that far to find one? As for wasting their fuel, it's their choice to do that. It's their fuel and their statistic. Geocachers are some of the most ecological sound and pro-environment people I've known. In my area, I know of cachers who have a daily streak going who don't own a car, use mass transit, and take bicycles when they cache. It's how they choose to participate, and it's their choice.

It might be a bit controversial but I think removing the 'Current Streak' statistic would be beneficial. Many times I see cachers travelling miles and miles by car to get one single smiley only to do a similar journey again the next day to get another smiley which was 161m away! Ridiculous! This goes on day after day basically wasting fuel over a statistic which means nothing, only to the cacher. Same thing goes for FTF but thankfully this isn't a stat.

So I say, remove this 'Current Streak' nonsense as it only encourages cachers to get a minimum daily geocache which I believe isn't in the spirit of the game. It's environmentally irresponsible.

  11. I'm having the same problem..... :( At first I though it was a browser issue with my iMac, but am having the same problems with Chrome and IE on my PC, as well as the iPhone Geocaching app. Has anyone contacted Groundspeak directly on this? It's been going on for at least a week.

  12. I'm the owner of this geocoin.

That's funny, like Fairyhoney I was curious what the coin looked like so I went to Google for help. Guess what the first photo was? TBNMP8

That is funny... Must want another for safe keeping ;) Dont blame him tho...I got both metals and would still go for another. Neat coin that I really like as part of my collection. Heres the pic off the page. f7291dfe-4001-471e-aac9-9189a01b4cae.jpg

  13. Effective April 21, 2015, a one-year moratorium is in place on all new challenge cache submissions. It does not impact previously published challenge cache listings.

For more information about the pause, see the Help Center article.

    * Please note: This thread will be open for 3 weeks, until May 12, 2015.

    1. They add a variety of flavor to the types of caches that are currently allowed. Having to do something extra to earn the Challenge icon makes it fun.

    2. Challenge caches that are very narrow in focus for what needs to be done to find and log it. For example, "if you have X number of caches, divide by 10, and then find Y number of caches", etc. etc.

    3. First, any cacher who submits a Challenge Cache to a reviewer MUST prove that they have met the requirements that would allow them to log the cache. If they haven't walked the walk, then they shouldn't be able to talk the talk

    4. A favorite challenge cache is one that fully takes advantage of the challenge that is to be performed. It should not be a give away, but earned. Like a 365 day streak, it takes time and planning to complete that cache. But that's what makes it fun.

    5. Ones that seem to be put out only to show that they cannot be solved, or are so narrow in focus that only 1 or 2 cachers would be able to complete it.

  14. Okay, color me confused. I was caught unaware of the changes coming today, but can the see the attempts at improving the notification experience, and accept is as a works in progress. What I'm confused about is what Moun10Bike mentioned in the initial post, and that is the ability to receive notifications via text. As far as I've known, the only way to receive notifications has been via email. To get them to my phone I have to enter my number as an email address ( i.e., cellphone#@messaging.sprintpcs.com for me). Is there a way to receive messages via SMS text? Did I miss a memo?

  15. A couple of questions about the iPhone Wherigo app.

1)My phone says that I have v324, but on the iTunes page for the app it says that 1.4.2 is the latest and greatest. Where can I find that on my phone?

2)The App store also says that there is a bonus features in-app download for $0.99. Any idea what that is, as I haven't seen it on my phone when I'm using the cartridge?

3)The release notes for the latest version say that you can download the cartridges to you computer, and then drag and drop them to the Wherigo folder in iTunes. Okay, I give up, where in the Sam Hill is that folder located????

    Thanks

  16. I figured it was a browser problem, since it's seen everywhere else. I just thought it strange that it worked under Windows 7 and not under Windows 8.1. I use an iMac at home, and it works there without any problems. But my work computer is a PC and I do updates there at times......

It is Internet Explorer that is the problem.

In the browser Tools menu, locate and change the "Compatibility Mode" setting.

Many of us have simply dumped IE and now use Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome for that reason.

  17. I recently upgraded my computer to a Dell All-in-One, retiring my 7 year old one that I built. Had not problems connecting and sending GPX files from Groundspeak's website to them. Since I've gotten the Dell, when I try to send any GPX files, it says the device is detected and connected. That is not the case. I connect via the USB cable, the computer sees them, and puts the icons on the desktop. When I connect using Garmin Express, it sees the both the GPSr and the installed microSD card. I'm guessing that it is a Windows 8.1/Internet Explorer problems, since it is happening with both my 550 and 650t. I can copy files via drag and drop to the devices, but it's nice to just hit the "Send to GPS" button and do it that way. Anyone have any insite what could be going on. My older computer was running Windows 7 32bit/Internet Explorer and had no problems.
