  1. mmmm maybe my problem was that their poor comphrehension skills like yours? Andrew Escuse me while I roll over and have a good laugh. Oh my now I feel so much better
  2. Garmin handles it's consumer products much like it handles its Avionic products which are also subject to extensive FAA regulations in addition to ISO 9000. Their service is very professional but like everything from rattlesnakes to puppy dogs, approach is everything. I don't know if you already had a beef with Garmin when you contacted them, but if you contacted me by telling me that Austrailian Law said I HAD to do something I would probably avoid you as well.
  3. You must know some different car dealers than the ones I have run into that would try to sell you three spare tires if they could get away with it!
  4. I used Neo Geo's registry method and used it on faith. It worked perfectly. Follow it exactly and you will get exactly the result you were looking for!!!
  5. Why a rebate on the 76xx 76xxx units. I'll toss my guess into the hat. When I was looking, the 76 appeared to be marketed as a marine unit. That was going to be my primary use for a new GPSr however, it was clear that the 60 and 76 series units were pretty much the same guts in a different box. I chose a 60Cx over 60Csx because a compass would be redundant for my purposes and the altimiter w/barometer didn't matter to me. I chose the 60 series over the 76 series because of the form factor, it had the same size screen but with an exposed antenna is smaller in overall size. I guess too that having the atennae "stick right out there" I had the self induced notion that I would get better reception. In conclusion, unless I'm misinformed, the 60 and 76 are equal in performance. I am very happy with the 60Cx but if I had been able to grab a 76 for a hundy less, I probably would have gone that way. Garmin is moving 60xx and 60xxx faster than the 76ers so they are making a deal.
  6. In my humble opinion, if the issues related to concerns with the 60CSx are either cost or the compass or barometer.......one can take the beltway around those with the 60Cx. This unit costs less money yet offers all the benefits of the improved chipset, memory and all. My Cx demonstrates excellent signal strength, accuracy and utility.
  7. I'm posting this as a new thread to try and get some new eyes on it, to see if others are having this problem. There has been another thread going for a while which details where a number of us cachers have discussed that our Cx units (Legends and Vistas) consistently go off-course by 30-300 feet when getting close to geocaches (which, as you all know, can be HUGE and extremely frustrating...) while our older GPSr units (like my black and white eTrex Legend) consistently get us right to the very same caches. I have been emailing with Garmin about the issue, but the tech (who is being quite professional and responsive...) wasn't able to replicate the problem in his test. So I told him I would attempt to capture the problem on video... Just curious but if a GPSr "becomes" off when it arrives near a cache, does that mean it was accurate until this point? Do it know?
  8. I've used an Etrex Yello for several years and recently upgraded to a 60Cx. Here, one leaves the harbor and you're in the ocean. My primary need for the Etrex was simply to be able to know my coordinates in case my single engine failed. There are many cases of really bad multi week floats that happen when thiings break down so my basic kit includes lat long/etrex and Handheld marine Radio. Being able to raise help on the radio and report EXACT location is everything. My upgrade to maps is mainly to be able to cruise bathymetric lines of depth while fishing. My sounder does not work in any kind of sea state but I find I can follow 350' pretty close with gps. We have many dirt roads (unnamed) in the mountains here and I was absolutely amazed that CityNav which includes the Virgin Islands shows these goat tracks. I've gone to a couple of destinations using the display that if not for the maps I would have dead ended. Next is some geocaching, I haven't done it yet but there are quite a few caches in the territory. GARMIN ROCKS
  9. I was foolishly trying to install West and East Topos to my hard drive and not having much success. I tried so hard I was able to generate a BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH, surely an unrelated event (he says). Recovering from that distracted me from the Topo issues and after I got everything put back together searched this Forum for Topo Install Data. Geo Neo your post for editing the registry works like a champ! You cannot install Topos to your hard drive with Garmin's out of the box setup. Search: Mapsource Topo Install in this forum and have it all! Thanks to you and thanks to the forum. I really appreciate all the good info. and folks here. Tom
  10. Lesson #1...read topic carefully....oops Magellan isn't even spelled like Garmin is it???
  11. Something went wrong when I was unlocking BlueChart to my 60Cx and when I tried to xfer charts to the unit, no go. In the process on Garmin's site I saw that the unlock had been issued to "unknown" unit. I used my second unlock key and got a proper unlock to the Cx. I emailed Garmin and said, "Duh...I don't know if it was you or me but could you restore my lock option on that Unknown unit?" The response took two days, was very courteous, no beating around the bush and the second license to unlock was restored. My dealings with them go way back from my positon as materials manager with a local seaplane operation and now with the increased automation that you can achieve online...we used to have to send cards back for updates for the aircraft instruments...their service and support is just fine! I think that to the extent one can use email or live chat or any alternative to "real person right now on the telephone", the frustration level goes W A Y D O W N. In the end service and support should be measured by results, not lap times..
  12. Hola friend... If you're asking me, I don't know, didn't get the kit. I purchased a Marine mount which has no connectivity. Tom
  13. http://www.thegpsstore.com/Detail-Garmin-G...microSD-GPS.asp I didn't get the "kit" from these guys but purchased a 60Cx, CityNav and BlueCharts. The CityNav they shipped was V8. Hope this helps...
  14. There's a thread, "Accurate Best Cheap GPSr for Beginner" with 14 replys currently located adjacent to your question.
  15. You just can't go wrong with a Garmin 60Cx/Csx, in my opinion. I have used a number of positioning devices over the years including six different GPS units and my 60Cx is absolutely on the mark! Remarks are made about magellan's customer service, I have no experience with it. I have had a lot of experience with Garmin both in support of instruments for a small local airline and personal devices and considering what passes for customer service these days, Garmin is pretty good.
  16. The depth function and water temp functions of a sonar are displayed by the GPS, no 'depth chart' is displayed. Its handy in a very rudimentary sort of way, but certainly no fishfinder/bottom scanner. Knowing the depth of the lake I'm on is the info I'm most interseted in. Does anyone know of a "rudimentary" sonar is capable of relaying this info to the 60SCX? The business end of any sonar unit is the transducer. They are either transom mounted or through hull, but must be submerged. Can the 60xxx receive data directly from a transducer? That I don't know but I doubt it due to the fact that a transducer simply functions to send and receives a sonar ping. The sounder "console" is the device that generates the ping and evaluates the return and displays information either in numerical and/or graphical format. Water Temp. requires a sensor to be in the drink to send info back to the controller. Often temp sensors are included onboard transducer units. If you needed a depth sounder in order to transfer information to the gps, linking the two would be silly because you could look left for your gps map position and look right for depth and temp. which as stated before would appear as numerical values or on a graphic bottom display. Garmin and other mfgrs. do have Marine Chart Plotter/Depth/Temp console mounted units but they obviously combine GPSr with sonar ping generators and more (?) If a 60xxx could generate a ping and receive a ping and translate that into data, I'd run to the source to purchase one myself.....but then why in fact does the 6oxxx unit have that display option? That is a good question.
  17. GPS (Global Positioning System) is the "System". The hardware you hold in your hand or mount in your car is a Receiver, it receives the System's signals. Software is the code that makes the signal useful to you (it tells you where you are or how to get to where you want to go, or even where you've been. What follows is about 10,000 details that must be absorbed through study and experience.
  18. After you go to the Map page and have pressed Menu and moved to the Setup Map section, press Menu one more time. That should bring up another menu that allows you to show or hide all the map sections associated with each specific product (City Nav, US Topo, etc) all at once - i.e., show/hide all US Topo, show/hide all City Nav, etc etc etc. I use this all the time to switch between street and topo maps depending on whether I'm driving or hiking. See the "Loading Garmin Maps" section of Sputnik's Garmin FAQ (specifically question 9) for a picture of what this menu looks like. Well, there you go! I appreciate your tip and have to say that this forum rocks! Tom
  19. You can try the choice Hide City Nav and that should allow display of other maps. I kept messing around and found out the following: With the San Juan area CityNav available (includes my local are in V.I.), when I went to navigate on land, the software automatically jumped from BlueChart to CityNav. When I went to go back to OceanNav, looking for depth lines, etc. it stayed in CityNav. On the Map page I selected Menu, Setup Map and scrolled through all the BlueChart maps until I got the the first (and closest to position CityNav module) the San Juan P.R. map. I deselected that map, quit and viola was back in the ocean. Your comment "Hide CityNav" sounds more elegant. Where is that Menu choice? Learning software higherarchy is always a trip! Thanks for your comment and having missed the Hide choice is like missing a cache, if you get my drift, but it's the mind, not the receiver wandering! Tomas
  20. I'm stumped at the moment I loaded Bluecharts and Eastern US onto my 1gb card in a 60Cx. When I took the receiver out in my boat the Bluecharts displayed perfectly. Back on dry land, I used the unit to Navigate home and it switched to a City Navigator map (Puerto Rico as well as Virgin Islands is included in Version 8). Well now, it seems to want to remain in city nav. and I can't get ocean desplays out of bluechart to save my life. This is in spite of confirming that the bluechart maps are checked and I even "switched" maps to bluechart somewhere in the menu structure. Anybody have experience with this or a quick answer?
  21. I looked at the RAM mounts an they look pretty good. I got off of $31 for the Garmin Marine Mount and in any kind of chop the r ocellates too much to focus on the screen.
  22. Almost without exception, if you get a phone call from an online seller, you're being hustled. The whole purpose of online transactions is to make the costs as low as possible through automation of the order placement/fulfillment process. A human calling you about your order costs money. The only reason for the seller to spend that money is to try to tag you for more dollars. Advertize the absolute cheapest price on an item, set the hook and then sell you accessories at the absolute highest prices. There still ain't no such thing as a free lunch...
  23. Ahhhh Soooo #2 I just picked up from another active thread that you have to accumulate ALL the maps/charts you want on the r in Mapsource, at one time and then do the total transfer. Appearantly each time you do a transfer, all chart/map data on the r is automatically wiped.... I'll give that a try!
