  1. Update: I received the newsletter yesterday, but still have not received any notifications of PQs run or logs on my caches since Wednesday, February 3.
  2. HeadHardHat's GeoSnippits tutorials, although be forewarned that some cache hiding techniques shown are against the guidelines. Also beware autoplay if you land on his main page.
  3. I think it would be more effective to have one goal spelled out at a time. First step: get it to Fort Bragg. It is a longer trip and a higher goal each time, which would be very satisfying. And as a potential finder, it is more work to deal with travel bugs that have multiple goals. If it wants to see the east and west coasts, has it been to either one yet? If its goal is to travel to Mexico and then back home to Germany, did it ever make it to Mexico?
  4. I can't find a geocacher called E Pineay. There is also not an active geocache called FTF: E Pineay. Could you tell us where you were in general? What country, state or province, and city? Were you in a particular park or on a named hiking trail?
  5. Wednesday I ran a regularly scheduled Pocket Query and subsequently was notified that it was available. Friday (yesterday), I ran the same query, and did not receive an email about it. I also scheduled two PQs last night to run today. Although they were successful, I did not get any notification that they had run and were ready. I have looked in my inbox, deleted folder, and spam folder.
  6. TFTC = MPLC = "Thanks for the cache." aka? I don't know of any special meaning in geocaching. Can you give an example? In ordinary English, it means "also known as," and is pronounced as separate letters, "A K A." BYOP = "Bring your own pen" or "Bring your own pencil." More abbreviations and English geocaching slang explained at Prime Suspect's GeoLex.
  7. Look, the original poster's daughter received a Geomate Jr. as a gift, and this is supposed to be the forum that is friendly to beginners. Although you may think that other devices are better for geocaching, it is not very helpful to tell someone that the gift their child received was worthless and to take it back. If it can be made to work, although it is limited, it may be an inexpensive and user-friendly way to get them started in geocaching.
  8. Try this site from Brand44. Apishere is defunct. Brand44 bought the Geomate Jr. from Apishere. Brand44's Geomate Jr. page includes a "Geomate Guide" in PDF, last updated August 2014. It explains how to update the database on your Geomate, depending which version you have, and whether you use a PC or a Mac. Certainly worth a try. Another cacher here asked about updates from Brand44 this past June, but then resolved the problem. This leads me to think that Brand44 is the most current place to get updates.
  9. Clarifying what Pup Patrol said, it would be better to "write note" and afterwards, when both parts of the challenge are met, add a new "found it" log. The cache owner will not get any notification of your find if you change the log type.
  10. MarkandTor, can you post a screenshot of what you see after you log a cache and press "Done"? I have been going by the screenshots I have seen for the Montana, supplemented by experimenting with my Oregon to see what happens when I push a particular button.
  11. Thanks but there isn't an arrow pointing left, only the down arrow to scroll down the list. Odd. This is a roundabout way to do it, but what if you picked one of the caches from the list and said to navigate to it? Can you X out of the screen from there? Or if "Done" is taking you to the "View your geocaches" screen and not a list of nearby geocaches, try the X in the lower left corner.
  12. There is an arrow pointing left, at the bottom of the screen. Hold the arrow to get back to the main menu. Then you should be able to see the map.
  13. Hi, Dolphin Finder 18. It is a plus that you took photos of the benchmarks, so that you can identify them and show what condition they are in. The Benchmark Hunting page includes a search for benchmarks in the Groundspeak database. Using the advanced search from that page gives you some more options, like coordinates and designation (what identifying name is stamped on the disk). There is also a FAQ section on the Benchmark Hunting page, which includes a quick guide to logging benchmarks. There is also a forum here about benchmark hunting. Newcomers welcome!
  14. GigaBowser, even some GPS models that are great for geocaching don't seem that way out of the box. Auto GPS units are set up for navigating roads. Handheld models are usually not set up ahead of time for one thing in particular, because someone might want it mostly for fishing, or driving, or geocaching. Probably changing a setting or two will get your GPS to stop "eating" destinations. But Garmin makes several different kinds of GPS. So to suggest a way to fix the problem, it would help a lot to know what kind it is.
  15. I agree, it never should have been painted over in the first place. But as a non-surveyor, I would not want to get in legal trouble for pursuing survey marks. If you could be certain what mark it was, but could not get the paint off, I would call that FOUND POOR.
  16. I think I would report it as Not Found, but I don't blame you for writing a note instead. If it was a mark where I could return without too much trouble, I would ask for guidance from the NGS Geodetic Advisor for my state/region. Or someone in the state Department of Transportation who would know about the legal issues with survey marks.
  17. There are a lot of usernames like that. Just on the first page of _a, I see _A&A_ _a&v_ _A_ _a_piano_ _a1x_ _aabbbbiiee_ _aannaa_ _AAOS_ _abbalicous16_ _abby_ Then there are usernames like # animal lover (header level 1) * Anna * (unordered list) [a] (link text or reference) __Abe__ (bold) `AleX` (code)
  18. Will we be told which of our logs are affected?
  19. Sure, but it doesn't look as if we can "Block User" without opening their message. Will Groundspeak be deleting these spam messages, I hope? Not just instructing us to "hide" them?
  20. Hi, The_Mamer. What are you trying to do? Update the caches on the Geomate, perhaps? Did the Geomate come with either an update cable or an update kit? And did the instructions refer to Apishere, Brand44, or some other site? A lot of questions, I know. But it will help to determine where you are getting stuck. If you are only looking to tell geocaching.com what kind of GPS you use, that information is not part of your user profile anymore.
  21. So, since there is no Markdown standard, how do we know what flavor of Markdown Groundspeak will use? They've already said some features will not be supported; how can we know which features ARE supported? Since this change amounts to learning a new computer markup language, will there be a tutorial and/or reference provided by Groundspeak? Knowledge of HTML and BBCode is very widespread; I have never encountered a site that mandated Markdown until now. If we did edit logs now, would they look like the dog's breakfast until sometime after February (because Markdown is not currently one of the ways to format logs)? Will there be a plain text way to format logs? It seems to me that a WYSIWYG editor that relies on Javascript would be difficult to implement across platforms. So on the one hand, text will look the way TPTB want it to, but on the other hand, the input tool for users may be restrictive. I personally prefer to write HTML and BBCode by hand. I don't trust WYSIWYG tools, partly because you can't see what's going on.
  22. Did you buy the eTrex locally? If so, perhaps the store or the salesperson loaded local geocaches on the eTrex 10 before you took it home. With this model, you can't just turn it on anywhere and find out what geocaches are nearby. You have to plan ahead.
  23. Sorry to hear that it has been so frustrating to you to try to get started geocaching. Does your girlfriend have a separate account? Is the Magellan new? If so, your girlfriend (or you, if this is a shared account) should be able to try a Premium Membership at geocaching.com for free for 30 days.
  24. Greetings, nervous newbies. Here's an explanation of , using Garmin Basecamp. It works with a Garmin Vista HCx, so it should work with your GPS too, in a pinch. But I have never used GSAK. If you used it before, I think you should ask around or try to find documentation of the steps to using GSAK to get GPX files on your Garmin eTrex Vista Cx. I suspect GSAK can do a similar thing with the files, but, of course, the procedure would be different. Does "Send Waypoints" look familiar? The email you get after your pocket query has run used to include the file; now it just has a link. You have to visit Build Pocket Queries --> Pocket Queries Ready for Download, while logged in at geocaching.com, and download the GPX file from there. What TriciaG is talking about is the Garmin Communicator browser plugin. You would need this if you wanted to use the "Send to My GPS" button on an individual cache's page. Windows 10 does not play nice with it. Also, some newer browsers are phasing out plugins. So, depending on your operating system and browser, it could be difficult to make this work. The easy workaround, once you figure out how to get GPX files on your GPS, is to click the "GPX file" button instead, if you should ever want the information on just one cache.
