  1. Bad idea: No sufficient supply of free water nearby. No one wants to haul 5 gallons of water half a mile through the brush. Area cannot tolerate repeated sudden pouring of water. Soil is prone to erosion, there are delicate plants right under the proposed cache, etc. Water drains faster than it can be poured in. That's just mean. Method of hiding does not account for the temporary weight of the water and its sudden addition. That zip tie might go around a PVC pipe, but will it hold a few gallons of water? No indication of anything unusual in the cache description. I suspect someone who is looking for a 1.5/1.5 micro would be annoyed when they saw what was required. Good idea: Type of cache is unusual in your area, and you have obtained a waterproof container for the log.
  2. View source. Look for the second appearance of "Fair!" or of "UserSuppliedContent". Now look after <span id="ctl00_ContentBody_LongDescription"> The cache description page is using tables to define a background color and border.
  3. How can it be a "substantial technical issue" when: A. Forcing HTML everything was a "snap," and B. Groundspeak used to offer a choice between HTML and plain text newsletters, although now they are not honoring users' decisions?
  4. ajscuba, what you're seeing is the plain text part of a multipart e-mail message. Other people are seeing (and talking about) the HTML version.
  5. "Send to GPS" defaults to DeLorme. Click on the Garmin tab.
  6. Oregon 450t. Sometimes Windows XP, sometimes Windows 7. My procedure is to download the zip file of a PQ from geocaching.com, unzip it on my hard drive, delete old version (if any) on GPS, copy unzipped GPX files from hard drive to GPS. I am using 8% of available waypoints. I have four PQs loaded currently, with a total of 871 caches. Two of the PQs are caches along a route. With the PQs I ran on June 30 and July 2, if there are additional waypoints associated with a cache, the waypoints show up in the GPS but not the cache. With one PQ I ran July 3, I did not notice any problems. With the fourth PQ, also run July 3, I may have the opposite problem from the first two. One cache description told me to use the parking coordinates below, but there was no parking waypoint (and it wasn't in the description). The information on the caches is in the main GPX file, but it does not appear on the GPS. If I search the GPS for that geocache by name, it is not found. I am in the geocaching profile. Nothing has changed except this baffling behavior with invisible geocache descriptions. Any ideas? Has anyone else experienced this? Do you know how to solve this problem?
  7. I don't think so. It does not seem likely that Groundspeak will even update their snapshot of the NGS database, which dates to 2000.
  8. When the D/T and size icon is grayed out with a question mark over it, that means the server is very busy. So busy that it's not going to match up that information to each individual cache in a list view.
  9. klassyart, you may be misunderstanding ngrrfan. Or maybe I am misunderstanding you. The problem is that the older Garmins had a serial connection. Not USB. The end that connected to the computer had 9 pins. If this is the kind of cable you had, you would need a serial-to-USB (USB to RS232) adapter if you want to connect the GPS to a computer that doesn't have a serial port but does have USB. The adapter generally requires software from the cable or adapter manufacturer installed. You can't just hook all the pieces together and expect it to work. ngrrfan is saying that not all USB-to-serial cables work. If your plain old eTrex has a serial connection, it might be a lot less hassle to just buy a new GPS. If your "plain old eTrex" isn't an eTrex H, a newer model will give you better reception.
  10. Currently the home page of the Waymarking web site, http://www.Waymarking.com/ returns a 503 error message, "Service unavailable." I have reported this to Groundspeak via the Help Center form.
  11. In Munich, the letterbox Arche 2000 has many favorite points. WW-II Relikt also has many favorite points, as much for the easily overlooked remnant of war as for the hide. There's a webcam cache on the Marienplatz that I, unfortunately, was unable to do. No one to take my picture. It's called "The heart of munich."
  12. ok, I have created the query, but I am stuck on unzipping and transferring What kind of computer do you have? (Mac, Windows, Linux etc.) How do you usually unzip .zip files? You can unzip the .zip file directly to your GPS. The unzipped file(s) will be .gpx and should go in the Garmin\GPX directory of your Oregon. If you are loading pocket queries to a memory card instead, you will have to create a Garmin folder on the card, then a GPX directory inside of that, and place the .gpx file(s) in there. Or you can take the belt-and-suspenders approach. Unzip the .zip file on your computer, then copy the .gpx file(s) to the Garmin\GPX directory of your GPS or memory card. There may be one or two .gpx files inside each .zip pocket query file. One will have the caches that matched your search. If there are additional waypoints included in the listings (parking coordinates, trailheads, etc.), you will also get a file ending with -wpts.gpx that contains these extra waypoints. If your pocket query resulted in a .gpx file, not zipped, you can copy that .gpx file directly to the Garmin\GPX folder of your GPS.
  13. Safari is a web browser for the Mac (and iPads, iPhone). It is no longer made for Windows.
  14. Ah ha ha. Yes, that would be a good interim goal, wouldn't it? MKFmly's link was broken. I think they intended to point to Understanding Geocaching Practices and Motivations.
  15. Oh, my. Older cachers are remarkably like younger cachers. Do you hope to find broken fast food toys?
  16. Hallo HappyHours, Vielleicht is das Problem nicht der Benutzername sondern die Adresse. Jedes Konto soll eigene E-Mail Adresse haben. Grüße aus Minnesota/USA.
  17. You might have better luck asking in the New England forum. Or maybe a moderator will move your thread there.
  18. When you put in the final coordinates, could the unit still be expecting N DD MM.MMM W DDD MM.MMM ? It's simple to overlook, and would certainly cause the coordinates to be way off. And as splashy suggested, it might help to double-check that you're using the right datum (WGS84).
  19. How close is "in the Minneapolis area"? Have you got transportation? If you do a pocket query, I think you should allow up to a 2.5 difficulty rating. A lot of cache owners will bump up the difficulty rating a little (or a lot if it's a tough puzzle) to account for you having to make that extra step of finding out the coordinates. Or you could go to page for the puzzle you have found, then click Find... ...nearby caches of this type, that I haven't found Then look at the easier rated ones and see if you can solve them. You could also try the Minnesota Geocaching Association Twin Cities Metro Area forum.
  20. The world is a very big place. In Minnesota, "abandoned" is the same, 48 hours. But there is also a category "unauthorized vehicles," which can be towed if left unattended. On public property "properly posted" (maybe meaning with a warning posted), 4 hours. Of most concern, on a highway and properly tagged by a peace officer, 4 hours. I have had my car tagged within 5 minutes while I went hiking on a trail. Finally, without owner consent at a single-family or duplex residential property or a "properly posted" nonresidential private property, theoretically they can tow you immediately.
  21. From the Endura manual, it seems to be a simple copy-and-paste operation to get a GPX file loaded. And, as you say, it worked before. My guess is that the culprit is Internet Explorer 11. Is that what you are using? If so, check the compatibility settings. You may have to add geocaching.com to the list of sites in compatibility view. 22. Welcome to geocaching. I know there are active geocachers in Hawaii; I see their posts on tumblr. One way to meet people is to go to an "event cache" near you. Newbies are welcome. I don't know of an active geocaching organization in Hawai'i, but you could try the West and Southwest forum here. No, sorry, you must have misunderstood something. Waypoint averaging can help you get the most accurate reading of coordinates possible with your unit, but it does not help you get closer to a specific spot. Even under ideal conditions, your GPS has a margin of error, give or take 10 feet. And so does the hider's GPS, unless she is a professional surveyor. The Oregon 450t takes a MicroSD card. Garmin says 4GB, but it is hard to find cards that small anymore, and the Oregon works fine with memory cards that have more capacity than that. File size of individual maps may be limited. Two sources of free maps for Garmins are GPSFileDepot and OpenStreetMap.nl. Garmin will be happy to sell you maps too, but you mentioned "trails from various sources." Here is some dense technical reading about maps from the unofficial Garmin Oregon wiki. Highlights are: You can have multiple maps Garmin has some standard default maps, the wiki names them Map names end with .img Maps should be loaded in the Garmin directory on your device or card So if you downloaded a map and it was called gmapsupp.img, the standard name for a supplemental map, you can change the name to HITopo.img or whatever is appropriate, and create another supplemental map. If you are putting the maps on a MicroSD card, you will have to create a directory called Garmin on the card.
  23. What does it look like? Like this? Or maybe something like this? They unscrew. You can use a tweezers, forceps, needle-nose pliers to get the log out. Then roll up tight and replace.
  24. The SD card is not a good idea. Why should anyone trust the safety of a card they found in a cache? Second, in my limited experience, the memory card has to be formatted for a particular camera. A card that's set up to work in your camera might not work in mine.
