  1. I'm also a newbie to this sport/game and I found a lot of help looking up reviews of different GPS models on Youtube and Amazon. I inevitably went with the Magellan 310, but would have rather had the 510 if I could have afforded it, as it has a touch screen (I think that was the one) Anyway, I was originally going to get the basic eXploarist Geocaching model from Magellan, but went with the 310 that offers a few more bells and whistles. I also am using this while I kayak too, which I'm sure the basic model is fine for, but this has some added topics to look up such as sun rise and set, which comes in handy if you are planning a very early morning search, or late afternoon one. I purchased mine on Amazon, the 310 is a $200 model, but I got brand new in the package with shipping for $125. My friend bought the 510 model on Amazon for $170, also brand new! It normally sells for $280! Check ebay too. I'm happy with mine, but a touch screen might be easier than the joy stick control I have to use with the 310. Maybe my fingers are too fat to control it, but I am getting used to it. If you do get into this, invest in a rechargeable battery set up. They eat batteries fast! Although, Magellan claims they will run for 15-18 hours on two AA batteries, which is probably true if you keep the screen brightness down to as low of a setting as you can get away with. I've needed mine on the brightest setting as I only go out in fair/sunny weather and it's really hard to see the screen. Just like on my Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone. Oh, and I always forget to turn off my GPS, so it really eats up the batteries overnight I thought I set mine to shut off after an hour, but apparently not, and I never think of it...ever, well, when I go to turn it on and the batteries are dead:) Good luck with your research. I love geocaching soooo much, I just wish I knew about it sooner! Oh, and get yourself a copy of the book THE JOY OF GEOCACHING by Paul & Dana Gillin. I just checked it out from my library and I haven't gotten too far into it(because I'm out searching for treasure) but I've learned A LOT so far!
