  1. Garmin III Plus, good reason to love it, I have may GPS units, sometimes 10 or more including Streetpilot III and V, would not be without a III Plus. Garmin must feel some compassion too because they finally came out with Ver 2.06 after 1 year without any updates in the firmware. PS I also love my eMap, right Gimpy
  2. "Is Benchmarking a different game, or part of Geocaching?" I guess I was a little ahead of the curve on this one, take a look at this Geocache I placed about a year ago, in my case the answer is: it is a part of Geocaching. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=4588 [This message was edited by ROCKY on June 07, 2002 at 03:00 PM.]
  3. Last year I recovered one established in 1899, the only recovery in the history section of the official data sheet is mine, in June of 2001. If you would like to check it out the Station name is Nunda, located in New York State PID NB2026 You may have to go to the NGS site, for some reason none of my 40 or so recoveries show up on Geocaching Benchmark pages, including I might add, Station Irish, PID NB1941
  4. Thanks guys for the reply. After reading your posts I called Garmin and they confirmed it is not anything they did. Their suggestion is to reload my software. I think I will wait for the new City Select and City Navigator to arrive before I try it.
  5. Garmin eMap, most bang for the buck at $120.00 You can add detailed maps with Garmin Mapsource Products when ever you feel you want to. [This message was edited by ROCKY on June 02, 2002 at 06:14 PM.]
  6. I hope this is just a glitch, but ever since I downloaded Mapsource 4.08 the phone numbers do not come up for the Points of Interest like they use to. In this age where everyone is traveling with a cell phone what makes more sense than to call ahead for hours, reservations etc., Why on earth would Garmin do this? I am lucky to have programmed my data cards before 4.08, but this will sure take away some of the usefulness of my GPS on an out of town trip not loaded with the old version. 7. I Think since you do not care about autorouting you should consider a III Plus to the Map 76S. In this comparison price will be a large factor. You will spend about $375.00 for the Map 76S where a III Plus would be about $200.00 For the difference in price here is what I see as the differences: Screen size, I don’t think a big deal when you are walking and can hold the GPS at any distance from your eyes. Memory, 24MB compared to 1.44, if you are loading Topo or Roads and Recreation 1.44 is all you need. Compass, Wal-Mart has them for $6.50. Altimeter, the altitude from the satellites is usually + or – 50 feet worst case. Reception, hands down the III Plus will far out perform the 76S and if you cache in heavy tree cover there is nothing more frustrating than loosing the sats. I know of several local cachers who the Map76 and at this time of year the have problems with reception in our area.
  8. I have a Garmin GPS III for sale, in addition to the GPS, original box, owners manual, 12V cigarette lighter adaptor. Price $155.00. Email me Rocky@infoblvd.net This unit is in like new condition, under 35 hours of use.
  9. This is my understanding of the City Select upgrade being offered by Garmin. There is a new City Select CD, which you can order right now for shipment to you at a later date. This CD is free of charge. If you bought your V after April 22nd you upgrade to what ever you have now free of charge. If like most of us you purchased before April 22nd it will be $50 per map area, including the one area you got with the purchase of the V, unless you already purchased the all unlock then it will be $100 for the same with the new CD. The coverage sounds much better, it will be interesting to see how it compares to Metroguide 4.01, which still may be a better way to go to get the whole country without additional fees.
  10. Gunther, sorry to hear that you had problems with 2.04, Garmin should be very concerned, to have released 2.04 so close to the release of 2.03 means they are having problems. I sent my unit to them for warranty repair of the beeper tone. It left me with ver 2.02, came back with ver 2.03, and 2.04 was released the day I got it back. They are a good company and I am confident in the end they will straighten this thing out, ver 2.99?
  11. You are right, the price has come down on them, I am now asking $325.00
  12. You can display coordinates on the map page. If you go to the "customize map" menu one of the functions is LAT/LON on or off. The on will make your coordinates appear at the top of the map page.
  13. Gee, 25 of them I hope you don't get stuck with them, TVNAV has them for $370.00 including shipping on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1348560738 Buy Now [This message was edited by ROCKY on April 27, 2002 at 04:40 PM.]
  14. If you have Metroguide version 2.00 or 3.00 the answer is none, the maps ar all just under 8MB. You have 1.44MB on your III Plus.. If you have the 4.01 and turn off the auto route function you can find some maps that will fit. You would be much better off with Roads and Recreation for your III Plus.

  16. I have it from a very good source that these forums are being policed for thoes selling copies of software. BEWARE, these people will prosecute! [This message was edited by ROCKY on April 22, 2002 at 03:30 PM.]
  17. Cozmo, for caching and driving I would suggest you look at the V. Much better for both, close in cost to the Map76S, you will never look back if you do.
  18. Please let this be a lesson to everyone, want to ruin the game and bring out the worst in people, put items of value in your caches. Sad to say, but oh so TRUE!!!!!

  23. quote: I steered clear of the firmware update because it was mysteriously pulled from Garmin's download area for several weeks with no explanation Just checked Garmin's site and the ver 2.02 update is back and listed as the current firmware. Would they pull it down, make changes then put it back up as the same version???
