  1. Mine would be: Park Loitering Earth Station Zebra Bohemoth Muskrats, Mosquitos and Muck
  2. Yes its absolutely possible, maybe the best time to do it. No mosquitos, not too hot, vegetation is down. I set up Melvin's in January or February, but frozen conditions don't really help becuase it never freezes enough.
  3. Team Og is correct, but failed to mention the GPS purchase permit, map download tax, geoclipping tariff, and multicache hunting stamps. Be prepared to be viewed as a criminal as you park for your cache hunts. You know geocaching is a major threat to the security of the NJ populus. DO NOT commit the capital offense of using an ammo box for a cache container. Keep your eyes on these boards, watch for upcoming get togethers and you will meet wonderful people in this sport.
  4. Seriously, Fish & Game? Is the area a Wildlife Management Area? I don't think they have any right to prohibit you from the woods unless its a WMA. I plan to get there soon, but the snow slowed me down.
  5. I use a Sony Clie SJ20 for Geoclipping descriptions, which go into the memo feature on the Clie'. I run GPilotS to download and save my track logs, waypoint lists and routes. I use Navigate to inverse between waypoints and project waypoints. I have literally hundreds of cache and benchmark descriptions loaded in and still have 8.7Mb of free space from the 15Mb available without the memory stick. Nice thing about the Clie is that it has a serial port for interfacing with the GPS. The SJ22 which I think is a slightly newer version can be had for $99. Cables are available thru PCMobile.com. With the Clie, I rarely bring paper descriptions with me when caching.
  6. SHARPSHUTR, what course of action got you your money back?
  7. Does anyone know of any original airway beacons that may still be existing in NJ, preferably central NJ?
  8. I've hopefully refined my numbers and with some hints and help from JoelSD and Mr. Magoo and Team Og I am off into the woods again. I have it narrowed to an area of possibility of about 400 foot square. Ah, the challenges!
  9. After doing Team Ekitt's The Cache Where Your the GPS, and thoroughly enjoying it, I just had to try Radio Waves. I've been working on it for a few days now and have come to some conclusions. I think luck plays a very big role. There might be a few too many variables involved for many to solve this one, myself included. Errors in positions of towers used to find the final cache, may yield areas of position that are really too big to search. Even the methods used to get the initial tower locations give varied positions depending on the method used. I stumbled on a net calculator that does circle-cirle intersects, but that has some strange operational anamolies. A purely graphical solution needs to be done at a very large scale to yield good enough results to enable a field search. AutoCad methods also have not helped me. So far, simple plotting with drafting instruments have yielded the most sensible (I think) results for me. Team Og seems to have hit it on the head with his log. Lots of possible final cache locations. Certainly a challenge Team Ekitt! What do others think about this cache?

  11. I am thinking about a new one, Mullica Midnight Multiple Madness, while the wives are gambling at A/C, the guys could be out in the tidal swamps of the Mullica River doing a mega night cache along the theme of Melvin's.
  12. The 12CX holds slightly more than 2000 tracks points. I would not hesitate to get it, if I needed one.
  13. Congratulations to The Fifth Melvin's Expeditionary Force. Nice to see the energy with which they entered the swamp for the third stage. I've made some minor clarifications to the cache description to aid the next brave souls who attempt it. Yes, Bassoon Pilot , the time frame seems right, you probably did see them in the swamp. I didn't see anyone else out there.
  14. I personally don't think its a good idea to place a cache on a State Game Land. Danger issue aside, the hunters have put a lot of effort in their pursuit of game from pre-season scouting to actual hunting. One hiker walking thru the area of a hunter on stand at the wrong time of day can ruin his whole day (early morning and late day mostly). Now placing caches in the safety zones around hunting areas near dwellings might be good for the hunter as cachers will chase the game out of those sanctuary areas and maybe to the hunter. Orange or Hi-Vis Lime green should always worn. Very few other colors are safe, nor even those red and black plaid jackets. Hunters key in on movement, not shape or color. I have, numerous occasions, for a short time, saw movement thinking it was game and it turned out to be humans.
  15. Always been interested in Celestial and Land navigation, Orienteering and map work. When I heard they turned off Selective Availibility I figured the GPS units were accurate enough for my use. After I got one and started researching their use on the 'net. Ran across a post on Sci.geo.nav newsgroup, went to the website and here I am.
  16. Does anyone have a program they would like to share for Palm operating system to decrypt the hints on the cache pages?
  17. I would certainly love the try a night cache. The things I used were just bits of reflective tape slightly larger that a thumbtack. You can buy Bright Eyes, Fire tacks , etc at hunting stores , but you need so many it gets expensive. Just find some old traffic cones and salvage the white tape off them. White works so much better than red. A suggestion for anyone wanting to set up this type, bring along something like a milk crate to stand on and set the tacks as high as possible. That helps eliminate the casual jerk that wants to remove the tacks. Mopar, I will do a Pine Barrens night cache, but not alone and without a weapon, too many Jersey Devil and Piney stories floating around.
  18. Rains 2 days prior won't make any difference in trying the cache. Only the approach from the parking area would get muddy but still passable, the rest of the cache journey is, well, let's say, a tad muddy. For anyone interested a good viewing area is at N40 27.252', W74 16.470'
  19. No, I don't use AOL, I use Earthlink. Never had this problem before.
  20. Are there any special or necessary browser settings to get the "Report a New Cache" page to load on the computer? I can't seem to get it to load.
  21. I am using Netscape 4.7 which I have been using all along. Yes, Javascript is enabled. I can post a note to exisiting caches, and have posted new caches using Netscape many times before. I also tried to post using Microsoft Internet Explorer and the same problem exists, the "report a new cache" screen does not appear.
  22. You are correct, I meant the "hide and seek a cache" page. But nevertheless, the new cache report form does not show up.
  23. Check out my "Night Vision" cache, zip code 08879, NJ
  24. I get the following error messages: ************************************************ You need to choose a terrain level. You need to have a name for your listing. You need to enter a real Latitude and Longitude for this listing. You must select a state/province for this listing. ************************************************* Of course I get those error messages because there was no form to allow me to enter that information. What I am saying is that the traditional new cache form does not appear on my machine. Have the links from the main page changed?
  25. I can't seem to get the form to post a new cache to appear on my computer. All I get is the following form, which when I complete it, it takes me back to the same form. Any suggestions? Do I need certain browser settings? Form below shows: _______________________________________________ Report a new cache [new] Please fill out the information below regarding your cache. Once you are done, click on the button at the bottom of the page to send it for review. You will receive a confirmation if your cache report was successfully submitted. You'll need to enter your cache report within this time, or your session will end and your submission won't be sent. If you need more time, we suggest writing your report in a text editor and copying and pasting the text onto this page. If you wish to add images to your cache, you'll have the option of uploading images once your cache report has been submitted. Note to Reviewer In order to expedite your new cache approval, please provide any details for the cache listing, such as final coordinates for a MultiCache, whether you received permission, or a description of the item for a virtual cache. The reviewer will delete this note before approving your listing. Regarding Travel Bugs: If you place a travel bug in your cache, you will need to add a log entry to your cache page. After clicking on the submit button, add a log to your cache page like in the "how to" guide to Travel Bugs. Yes. I have read and understand the guidelines for listing a cache. Yes. I have read and agree to the terms of use agreement..
