  1. Hello again all! Does anyone here have this soft ware? If so what do you think about it? I looks pretty sweet to me! I know there are alot of "options" to it but it looks like it would be worth it in the long run. Looks like it comes with ALOT of goodies too...GPS tracking on your laptop, downloading info from your handheld, route planing, etc, etc. As always thanks for the help! lost
  2. Hello all! I was thinking since I don't have a PDA but I am about due for a new cell phone.... What about using one of those new cell phones that is a PDA too? I looked at one and it had a Palm OS operating system. Waht version I don't know. It had everything but the kitchen sink! lol I would think it would work if the version of OS was new enough? I'm not a computer person or an electronics junky but I can usually figure these things out. Suppose it would work, how user friendly (easy) is it to use the pocket query function in my premium membership? Again the only computer language I speak is HAMMER!! Would be nice to kill 2 birds with one stone! Thanks for all the help! lost
  3. If you carry a day pack you could always, take along a pair of sandels. Change at the water, wear them until your feet dry out then change back into your shoes. You can hang your wet sandles on the pack for the trip back. You could also look for a spot to cross on the rocks if you can find one. I always travel with a aluminium walking stick for this reason. ( and many others) Just my .02 Don't forget dry socks, no matter waht you decide. lost
  4. Maggie, Although, I'm not really in south central Ohio I would be interrested in your group. If we got together every coupla months I think I'd make the drive. That is if your group wouldn't mind a newbie. Keep us posted please. lost
  5. That was the web site that I found earlier. Can you still get a cache published if you don't have "permission" from a park that may not require a permit? What about cemetaries? I would assume if it is on private land you'd have to ask, but what about township cemetaries and such? One last question, I know of several good fishing holes under some local highway overpasses. I know the state owns a swath of land either side and under overpasses. ( I can't remember the lineal(sp) footing but I can find it) I also trap in the winter and you can place traps under overpasses so long as you "stay on" state land. Do you think a situation like this would require permission? I'm not tring to put anyone on the spot here, just looking for some adice. I'm not one of those, "well so and so said I could do it", kind of people. Cover your own BUTT right? Thanks for all of the help!! lost
  6. Hello all! My one year old son and I have been members of this new addictoin for about a week now and we were thinking about placing our first cache in a few weeks. We live out side of Cincinnati Ohio and have a few good spots in mind. I was looking on the net and it seems like just about every where has to have a permit for a cache. Can some one here help me with this seems like an awful lot of work. The state parks seem pretty easy but alot of the parks and such..blah,blah,blah.... I just can't see all of those caches listed on the map having permits, maybe they do I could be wrong. Can someone point me in the right direction and make me feel a little better? lost
  7. That's a good idea! I always travel with a Silva Ranger anyway, I spoze I could use it?! Just take a bering and of you go. Makes sence to use it under the trees when the GPS is spazzing out! Thanks! lost
  8. Well that pretty much summs it up! Thanks guys! lost
  9. BackPackRider and I were on a quest today. My old Lorance Globalnav 12 was working great all day when we were out in the open. Once we came to our last find of the day it let us down. The cache was located in a wooded area and it would not keep us "found", and when it did the accuracy was horriable. Until this point it has never let me down but it has always fallen short in the woods. Could this be due to it's age? Would a newer unit read better in the woods? Is there anything I can do to improve the performance of this unit? I would like to have a newer gps but the $$$$ isn't there right now. I would like to look for some a little further off the beaten path but am a little weary of doing that after today. Any thoughts about the Garmin Legend C? I found one at Dick's that is bundled with all of the software and some maps (I assume) for about $149 after the rebate from Garmin. That is a good price? Thanks for all of the help, lost
  10. Hello again gang! I was looking at some of the replies in the cache logs and had a few questions about some of the abreviations. Some I figured out on my own: TNLNSL=took nothing, left nothing, signed log. HOwever, my brain has stopped there. Could yall help me with all of the others: TFTC,etc, etc. Is there a link to them? As always any help is very much sppreciated! lost
  11. Howdy gang! Well today my one year old and I went on our first "treasure hunt". He was riding happily up in the back pack while dad "followed the little green arrow". MAN WHAT A BLAST!! I'M HOOKED. I can't think about driving anywhere with out logging on to see what caches are around where I'm going. Maybe I should see my doctor about a vaccine? Maybe it's OCD? You guys/gals shurly don't exhibit these same symptoms? Any way what I learned my first trip out. 1. WEAR PANTS.....Is it just me or do caches attract poision ivy and black berry bushes? 2. If you stop moving the GPS stops reading! 3. That neat aluminium hicking stick you left in the trunk would be great to push some of those black berry thorns out of the way with. Good thing you don't have it or that's exactly what you'd do. 4. If there's a body of water to go around...........you can bet your behind you'll have to go around it. 5. The aforementioned body of water has a parking lot on the side where the cache is, but you'll only find it while walking in circles to make your gps work again. 6. The toddler on your back doesn't really care about the "treasure hunt", he's just as content to ride happily along in the backpack and eat his hat...lol lost
  12. Hello all! I too am new to this GREAT game! I think I have the answer to your question about the converting degrees, minutes, seconds into degrees minutes thousandths of seconds? If you take the seconds in your first cord. and multiply them by, .01667 you should arrive at the answer that you seek. I tried it for a few locals and let the gps check my math and they all worked out. Please let us know how this works out for you. good luck lost
