  1. You would just add a waypoint and manually enter the coords. David Magellan Insider/Beta Tester
  2. No, it does not have an electronic compass, but neither does the eX110. If you want a GPS with an electronic compass you're going to have to pay a bit more than $130! However, I've been caching for quite a while and although the compass is nice, it really isn't a necessary. Actually, the first 1000 I logged I did so with a Magellan Triton 1500 that didn't have one and as long as you keep moving, even at a slow pace, you'll find that the GPS will guid you just like a compass... David
  3. The eXplorist 110 is probably the best unit you're going to find for the $99 Amazon is asking for it; however, it is an entry level GPS and that needs to be understood. This is a great little starter device and will do most everything up upper level units will do including handle waypoints, paperless Geocaching, tracks and routes; however, the options that go along with these are limited in the unit. As an avid Geocacher one of the limits that I would struggle with is the limit of only being able to load 500 caches at a time. At first glance this might not seem like a major limitation; however, when traveling I often load between 1,500 to 5,000 caches in my GPS before taking off for a Geocaching trip. Because of these limitation and the fact that you cannot load additional maps on the eX110 I would like recommend stepping up the eX310, which can be purcahsed on Amazon, for $129. This unit does not have the limitations of the eX110. Therefore you can load additional maps, 10,000 geocaches and waypoints and have sorting and capabilites that the eX110 does not have. As a beta tester for Magellan Outdoor GPS I have all of their outdoor products and I recommend this GPS as a less expensive option. I hope this helps, David Magellan Insider/Beta Tester
  4. Did you download the pocket query as a ZIP file? Extract the file and copy only the name.gpx file to the Geocaches directory in the eX610. However, do not copy the -wpts.gpx file to the Geocaches directoy. If you want to load the child waypoints to the GPS then you can copy the -wpts.gpx file to the waypoints directory in the eX610. Also, if your computer is a PC and not a MAC, then you can download Magellan's Vantage Point software and it will help you with the process or you can also use GSAK. Hope this helps, David Magellan Insiders/Beta Tester
  5. If anyone has a Magellan eXplorist 510, 610 or 710 and the rubber USB cover has cracked or has broken off, please contact me because Magellan has made these item available for free replacement. zukicacher@gmail.com David Magellan Insider/Beta Tester
  6. I'm going to be honest with you. As a Beta Tester for Magellan Outdoors and as a Geocacher I would highly recommend the eX310 over the eX110 if you're are wanting to go with the smaller non-touch screen unit. The eX110 has a database limit of only 500 Geocaches to where the eX310 will hold 10,000. Also, the eX310 will allow custom/additional maps and the eX110 will not. There are several other features that the eX310 has that the eX110 does not, like filtering and sorting the caches in the database. Hope this helps, David Magellan Insider/Beta Tester
  7. Please join the forum at: http://www.magellaninsiders.com. I will activate your account when you join, then contact the user S1G. Since my Germany is very poor it would be difficult for me to assist you; however, Steffen (S1G) will be able to help. David Magellan Insiders/Beta Tester
  8. Super. As a Magellan GPS user I would invite you to join us at http://www.magellaninsiders.com. It is a public forum of Magellan users that help each other get the most out of their GPSes. David
  9. Go to my website http://www.exploristchat.com and go to the downloads area and download "Firmware V1.7 Restore Set - GCV17.zip". This includes all of the files for the GC. Once you've downloaded it, unzip it to your desktop and then you can copy all of the files onto your GC and it will restore it to the current firmware version. Also, if you want, you could just copy the app>elements directory into the app directory on your GC since that is where the icons live. Also, I highly suggest keeping a backup copy of all of the files on your GC, just in case something like this happens in the future. Hope this helps, David Magellan Insider/Beta Tester
  10. Actually the price difference between the two units is $100 if you look on Amazon.com, where you can get the eX510 for $179.99. If you want a unit comparable to the Oregon with an electronic compass you can get the eXplorist 610 for $249.99 from Amazon. Some other points for the eX610 is that it comes preloaded with 24K TOPO maps of the entire US. It will hold 10,000 Geocaches verses the Orgeon's 5,000. The eX610 also has a built in Geotagging camera/camcorder and a voice recorder. Hope this helps, David Magellan Insider
  11. If anyone has had problems with the rubber USB cover cracking or ripping on their Magellan eXplorist 110, 310, 510, 610, 710 or GC; could you please let me know. Thank You, David Magellan Insider/Beta Tester
  12. Wolf9545, Obviously this failure with the GC is a known problem, so if you would like a replacement for the problem unit, please email me at zukicacher@gmail.com and I will give you the contact information for the Magellan Outdoor product manager. Even if your GPS is out of warrenty, he's pretty good about replacing units that have failed with a known problem like this one. David Magellan Insider/Beta Tester
  13. There is a known issue with Magellan communicator, and "send to GPS" Keeps asking you if you want to upgrade to a newer version, right? Just say no, that pop-up will go away, and use the communicator as it's intended to work. Supposedly this is all on Magellan to fix, not Groundspeak. This doesn't mean Magellan sucks for all eternity, there have been problems with Garmin Communicator in the past. This problem was resolved some time ago;however, the problem is that the version of the software with the problem will not update so the user is stuck with the problem. If you are seeing this problem, please go the MagellanGPS.com and download the newest version and this problem will go away. Also, if you are continuing to see problems with the communicator, also download the newest version. David Magellan Insider/Beta Tester
  14. There is a new firmware release coming for the GC very soon, which should fix this. David Magellan Insider/Beta Tester
  15. Also, you need to know that the Triton 400 doesn't like the HTML contained in some of the descriptions here on GC.com and it can and will lock lockup your T400, but there are some steps you can take to prevent this. The first step is to make absolutely sure that you make a copy of the files on the TFAT drive and keep them on your computer. The second thing is learning to use an HTML stripper on the GPX files before loading them onto the GPS. I have a couple of them, but the one that I most commonly use works with GSAK. David Magellan Insider/Beta Tester
  16. It all depends on the types of maps you like and want. If you're looking for TOPO there are several cheap/free options available. If you're wanting satellite maps, again there are free resources available. If you would like more information and some instructions on creating your own maps, join us at: http://www.magellaninsiders.com David Magellan Insider/Beta Tester
  17. Check out this video, it might help you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40ZsZhlY_MU Also, please feel free to join us at Http://www.magellanInsiders.com. This is a forum of users where you can find the answers to all of your questions. David Magellan Insider
  18. How long have you had it? David Magellan Insider
  19. Here is something to think about if you're going to be on your 4 wheeler. If you're wearing gloves the touch screen could be an issue! A friend of mine has an Oregon and a 62 and won't even think about taking the Oregon on his dirt bike or on his quad, just because of this issue. David Magellan Insider
  20. I have tried all speeds, and about 2-3 MPH seems to produce the best results but when you are on a cliff or in a river bed that is rather impractical. Maybe what we're all learning here is that for a GOOD GC GPS you need to have the active compass and this model just isn't going to cut it. That would be the ONE thing that it really needs, if we determine that is what the issue boils down to. I was on a 50 degree plus grade two weeks ago and moving at all was nuts, let alone holding my GPS as a 45 degree angle. Terrain 4-5 caches make the requirements for the speed and amount of distance ot get the reading 'on' nearly IMPOSSIBLE. OK, now I've exceeded my 2 cents worth again. Y I absolutely agree, in those types of conditions and electric compass is a great to have. It isn't a must, but it is great to have and I love using my eXplorist 610 & 710 because of conditions like this; however, the truth is you're not going to find a new GPS on the market for $120 with an electronic compass. With Garmin you'll be looking at a minimum of the eTrex 30 which runs around $300 and with Magellan the eXplorist 610 which can be purchased from Amazon for around $350. The truth is, the eXplorist 110 as well as the GC and eX310; which are all the exact same hardware are all entry level GPS receivers that are being sold at an entry level price... David Magellan Insider
  21. One more question. How fast are you moving when the compass/gps starts freezing? Since these units do not have an active compass they will not update correctly when standing still or when moving slower than 1.5 mph. I'm just wondering if this could be part of the problem. A lot of people are trying to compare these units to their cell phones; however, their cell phones do have active compasses in them and therefore they can and will update while stopped. If this is the problem, Magellan does build units with active compasses in them; however, there cost is closer to the cost of an I-phone or good quality Android. Just wondering! David
  22. I use a lanyard with all of my units; however, I just know to pick the unit up and give it a second or you to grab a good lock before continuing. This normally only takes a couple of seconds; but of course with the eX110 I have to be moving (walking) when I do so.... David
  23. Ghosty, I am sorry to hear that you are having these issues with your eX110 and I hope that I can help resolve the problem. My first question is, how are you holding the GPS when you are using it? Top straight up, top tilted up (45 degree angle), flat or top pointing somewhat down. I am asking this, but it has been reported that a number of users who have been having problems with the "Compass" line of products (eX110, eX310, GC) have reported holding their units level to the ground; however, the antenna in these units is mounted so that they work best when held at a 45 degree angel with the top up. Also, in order that I can answer Matt's questions, the Product Engineer, can you please answer the following questions: * Which Orientation do you have selected in the Map Options: Track Up, North Up or Course Up? * Which location Icon are you using? Smart Arrow or Standard Arrow and which size. * Is the Auto Zoom function enabled? * Do you have the Compass Overlay enabled? If can answer these questions for me, I will speak directly to the Product Manager/Engineer and see what he can tell me. Also, please feel free to email me the answers at ZukiCacher@gmail.com Also, I apologize to anyone else who is having similar issues, but if you could please email me telling me the problem you're having and answers the included questions I will do everything in my power to help resolve your issues. Please understand that I am NOT an Employee of Magellan, but a Beta Tester and a Geocacher; however, as their lead US Beta Tester I'm not the phone with them constantly and I will do what I can to find out the answers for you, because Magellan is listening. Thank you, David Magellan Insider
  24. I am sorry to report that there is no way to increase the size of the font on your eX310 at this time. Magellan has already increased the size of the fonts on the compass line of unit GC, 110 and 310 once; which was actually done before the release of the 110 and 310 and this is something that is supposed to be addressed again in a future up date. However, this is somewhat difficult because this is a very small GPS with a 2.2" screen and when you start increase the font sizes on the screen display limitations very quickly arise. Yes, I can understand your problem because too am no longer 25 years old and I have 6 of these units; but to be honest I normally end up using one of my "touch" units - eX510, 610 and 710 because of this. I know that they cost more, but the larger screen makes a big difference on the old eyes. David Magellan Insider
