  1. Hello, First of all, as a Magellan eXplorist user I would like to invite you to join us at http://www.exploristforum.com where we work in conjuction with Magellan to make these units the best GPSrs on the market and help each other out with technical issues. Also, as far as a cable for the eX310 you don't need anything special to plug or eX310 into your computer. The eX310 uses a standard micro USB cable which you can pickup and Walmart or which you might have gotten with another device. Ok, now as far as inputting the coords into the unit please first check the firmward version on the unit. To do this please goto Tools>Settings>Product Info>Versions and verify that it is 1.17. If it is not, then you'll have to find a cable and update the firmware, which can be found at http://www.magellangps.com for free. If is does have the firmware 1.17 on the unit, then please tell me exactly what you're doing to input the cache coords into the unit, because my eX310 has no way to manually enter a Geocache coord that I know of; however, you can input waypoints and I'm able to enter them in to the 7th and 8th digit. I hope this helps. I look forward to you reply so we can get this unit working for you. David Magellan Insider
  2. I would highly recommend the Magellan eXplorist eX310 for this, which will do everything you're asking plus comes loaded with a good quality basemap and you can later purchase the 24k high end topos for your region for about $50. Although this unit is currently marked down to $179.99 at MagellanGPS.com you can pick it up on Amazon for $149.99. However, if you want to save a few more bucks you can also look at the Magellan eXplorist eX110 which you can put up on Amazon for $119. The main difference with this unit is that you will not be able to upgrade to the high end topos, but it will track, route and do everything expected of a higher end unit for the purposes that you're looking for. Hope this helps, David
  3. I will run a test on mine in the next couple of days to double check to make sure I don't see this... I'll get back with you on what I find. David
  4. First of all I would like to congraduate you on getting into Geocaching and on purchasing your GC. Secondly, I would like to invite you to come over to http://www.exploristforum.com and join us. Any questions that you have regarding a Magellan GPS should be able to be answered there. However, if you cannot find an answer on the forum, please feel free to contact me there (DWCarr1) or here on Geocaching.com (SoCal Zukicachers) and I’ll be more than happen you help out, because I’m working with Magellan in their “Insiders” program to Beta Test and help with providing technical support when I can and if I can’t I can always given them a call and get you an answer. As to your current question – on the Geocaching list the name is truncated to around 26 to 28 letters in length and there is currently no way to see the remaining portion of the name; however, this does bring up a good point and I’m currently working on a report containing suggestions for future upgrades so I’ll add this into the report. As far as the names on the maps screen, I’m going to have to look into this – because in the prior firmware the unit used to display the name; however, in the current firmware the unit is now displaying the GC code instead of the name and I had not noticed this change until looking at it tonight. 5. I picked up a Magellan eXplorist 110 a couple of weeks ago as a tag along to my other GPSrs and this is a neat little unit. Being priced at $129 it is a rival to the Garmin eTrex 10. However, the eX110 has a vibrant color screen, which the eTrex 10 doesn’t. The eX110 also comes with a worldwide base map, supports 500 waypoints, 25 routes, 10 tracks and 500 Geocaches. The unit also displays the vertical profile of a track, hunt & fish calendar and sun & moon information. Plus the unit also performs area calculations if needed. The unit also supports full paperless caching. This little unit is a great starter unit or an awesome add on to the GPS collection to keep the higher end units out of the hands of the kiddos… It is also a great little unit for hiking or biking… Just thought I would put this out here in case anyone is little for a lower end unit at a great price... SoCal Zukicacher…

  8. Glad to hear that you were taken care off. Since you're an new eXplorist user I would invite you to join us over at http://www.exploristforum.com. There you'll be able to get more information on using the unit as well as hints on making custom maps for free. There are also a number of Magellan Insiders (Beta Testers) like myself that can help with any problems you might have and if we can't we can contact Magellan directly for you. David
  9. I don't run a Mac, but you should be able to find someone that does over at http://www.exploristforum.com.... David
  10. The explorist 210 is a very old unit, as far as GPSrs go. Since Magellan produced the 210 they replaced it with the Triton series and now with the new line of eXplorist which includes the GC, 110, 310, 510, 610 and 710. As a tester for Magellen I've had to opportunity to use each of these units, except for the new 110 and I can tell you that you're going to be much happier with one of the new eXplorist units. If you're looking for something easy to use and just for Geocaching the GC is a neat little unit. However, for just a few more dollars you can get the eXplorist 310 which includes routing and tracks as well as the ability to install higher end maps that can be purchased from Magellan. Both of these units come with the world map already installed, but the eX310 can handle the same topo maps that come on the eX610 and eX710, but are seperated into regions due to limited memory on the unit. As far as Geocaching, both of these units will handle 10,000 geocaches at a time and are extremely accurate. As to date I've logged over 4500 caches with these new units and have been extremely happy with them. If you have any more question just give me a shout or join us over that http://www.exploristforum.com. David P.S. - You can find the eX310 on the net for under $150.00 and I've seen it as low as $139.00 on Amazon, but you just have to keep your eyes open and watch for sales...
  11. Just got back from the event after running the series for 3 days - what a blast! It was great to see all of the cachers that I've already met and to get to meet several others. It was also a treat to see that Magellan GPS company came out to support and sponsor this event with some freebies - like a couple of GPSrs... Thanks Clay4 & whtwolfden for both this series and this event...
  12. It is a great little Geocaching unit for the price and as far as it being discontinued, that is nothing more than a rumor. I'm a Magellan Beta tester and I was down at Magellan two weeks ago and they've said nothing of the sort. Actually, they've told me the opposite. This little unit is selling very well and they're hoping to put out some updates to it in the future to make it an even better unit. For the price it is a great unit. However, if you do want to do something more than Geoaching then I agree, look at a higher end unit... David
  13. If you have any other question about your GC come over and join us at http://www.eXploristforum.com and the guys there will be able to answer just about any question you might have. David
  14. I'm not sure I understand, why will it not read your Long and Lat - my 310 does it perfectly. Are you having a problem trying to display it on the screen, or is the unit just not working? David P.S. As an eXplorist owner you might consider joining us at http:/www.exploristforum.com. The individuals on this forum will be able to answer any question you might have.
  15. Although I have several GPSrs including Magellan's high end until the eX710, I also have a the eX310 and it is a great little unit. If I was going to buy an easy to use unit for Geocaching for a friend this is the unit that I would buy, no questions asked. In the past I had recommended the GC for those starting out, however, after using the eX310 I always direct people straight to it. It is actually the same hardware as the GC, however, the firmware on it includes most all of the features of the high end units. David
  16. Do you have the Vantage Point Software loaded on your computer and can it communicate with your GC? David
  17. The beta maps are still really, really buggy! When moving around the map and zooming in and out the personalization stops working and when will we be able to see Premium Member Only Caches?
  18. Come over to http://www.exploristforum.com and you'll find help there...
  19. The new firmware for the Magellan eX510, 610 and 710 units is now available on the Magellangps.com website...
  20. Let me try it with one of my T400s and I'll get back to you, however, I've used my T1500 and it works fine... David
  21. I have had a GC since they came out and it is a neat little GPS and the paperless caching on it is incredible. I am often very slow to recommend products, especially to friends - but I've recommended this unit to several friends and have helped them get started with Geocaching with this unit and all of them have been very happy with their GCs. If you want more information check out http://www.exploristforum.com and the guys there will answer any questions you have and you'll be able to find screen shots on the unit as well. Also, if you're wanting a GPS for $200 or less and want more functionality, the Magellan eX310 is being released this week and it is a big brother to the GC and has added functionality starting at $199. I've been caching with a eX310 for a couple of months now and it has the same paperless caching as the GC and is also a really neat option - put also has added tracking features of a higher end unit... David
  22. Dito - I also have a GC and love it! David
  23. Have you loaded the v1.6 firmware update? The update increased the font size a little bit...
  24. When you mark a cache as found and then enter comments on the GC, once you get home to connect the GC to your computer and upload the logs.txt file from the Geocache directory on the unit to Geocaching.com by accessing the Field Notes page here on the website. Once you've upload the log.txt file to your field notes the website will create a list for you of the field notes you've upload, at this point you can go through the list and log them... David
  25. Anytime to want more information concerning the eXplorist line of GPSrs, check out http://www.eXploristforum.com Later, David
