  1. Article on Paperless Caching This article explains paperless caching, using GSAK and CacheMate. It was the only reference I needed to get going - very thorough
  2. One nice thing about my hubby being in the Army is that there is always going to be a good surplus store nearby He looked at work, but couldn't get any of their empty ammo cans, but our local surplus store has them for $4 or $7.50. A bit high compared to what some have said they can get them for, but not bad.
  3. 2.8 miles as the crow flies, a little further on the roads. I want to get it, but it doesn't look very stroller friendly so I need to wait til I a. decrypt the page info and b. get a chance to go out without the kids. Within 15 miles of my house, there are 128 caches.
  4. I'm a SAHM to 2 pre-schoolers. Brodie's 3.5 and Mason's 16mos. Yesterday we skipped naptime just to go caching (hey, we got an FTF!). Having the mini-cachers restricts some of the caches we can attempt (I save those for when DH stays home with the kids or when we have a sitter, we'll go out on our own). The 3.5 yr old isn't in love with it, he'd rather stop and play at the playgrounds that are inevitably at the parks, but generally if I tell him he can play at the playground as soon as we're done "treasure hunting" he's cooperative enough.
  5. My husband's also goes to the menu every time. I got his through Erwin Computers for $591. They have *excellent* customer service. I was quite leery about using them as I'd never heard of them, but I was very pleased. Nuvi 350
  6. The first time I ran into one, I had to log a DNF b/c I didn't know the trick and thought I was just blind!
  7. Thanks Airmapper. I was hoping you'd post, I need to bookmark your Lowrance user's guide I *really* like that I can distinguish child waypoints from other waypoints - with my eXplorist, I was always trying to find caches at points that popped up on my screen, not being able to tell that they were just parking coords.
  8. Thanks for the info. I had a feeling that might be the case. I'm going through and reassigning different icons for the different categories now. I am pretty sure that I can remember what's what...and if not, I'll have my Palm with me anyway that has the full info.
  9. OK, I found out that the reason that the icons aren't showing up is that those icons aren't loaded into my iFinder (apparently). For one category I chose a skull & crossbones and that icon is showing as that icon is loaded. I'd *really* like to be able to see the different icons that are caching specific rather than just choosing dots or Xs. Anyone know if that's possible?
  10. I have no idea. You might just have to wait a few months til stores start carrying it. Or, you could hit up a store known for carrying GPS, like Bass Pro Shops and ask them.
  11. My guess is that if no one (or very few people) has seen it yet, it's going to be one of those things that you're just going to have to get your hands on and try it out for yourself...
  12. I just got a Lowrance iFinder Pro (Plus) this weekend and so far, I really like it. My only problem is that when I loaded the caches from GSAK onto my MMC card, the cache icons didn't make it. The names, size and diff/terr made it, but not the actual icon. I'm going to go and poke around and see if I can find the answer myself, but thought I'd throw it out here and see if anyone else knew what to do. Thanks! --Kristin PS - The maps from MC made it just fine as well, it's just the cache icons that didn't make it.
  13. Yup, if you own a Geko 201 or 301. I use the exact same data cable I use for the eTrex. Thanks! I'm thinking of getting one for my mom for Christmas
  14. You've gotten some good advice. There are lots of different ways to set up everything to go paperless. Here's the article that helped me first get started... http://65.34.18.106/content.php?article.15
  15. Can I download waypoints into a Geko, like from GSAK?
  16. ditto and I will never go back... best $28 I spent EVAR Me too. I got them both right out of the gate and I can't imagine doing it any differently.
  17. Post a "Should Be Archived" log - it will send a note to the reviewer.
  18. Oooh, you're right... Back to the drawing board I guess!
  19. Well, unfortunately, I lost my GPSr this weekend so the cache is postponed indefinitely. I'd started writing it up before I got the coords. Hopefully my GPSr will find its way home (or I can get a new one quickly) and will get the coords locked in and get it up for review and then published. (It'll be GCYAKK)
  20. YAY! The soft reset worked!! Thank you so much, I was very worried it was done for.
  21. Thanks for that suggestion. I know exactly where I lost it (well, not *exactly*, but pretty close). It was quite a ways away from the cache - we hit the playground at the park and then walked back to the car. The park is a big loop around the lake and the cache would be at 2 o'clock, the playground at 6 o'clock and the car at 10 o'clock. I am afraid that it fell out of the stroller when we folded it back up at the parking lot. I will post a note on that cache *just in case*. OK, off to reset the Palm. I'll brb and update. Thanks for the suggestions!! --Kristin
  22. My Palm is 3 months old and has worked flawlessly to date. This morning I was out looking for a cache without my GPSr (long story, think I lost it this weekend ) and was looking back at my CacheMate files for some info about one in a park where we happened to be. I noticed that the screen was a little dimmer than usual, but just attributed it to the bright day. I put it back in my bag, and later went to check for the hint (it's hard to find a cache without a GPSr and just a vague idea of where it is) but the screen wouldn't come on at all. I thought it was just out of power, but it's been charging all day and no luck. I know it's more than just the screen having gone out as when I connect it to the USB on my computer, there's no connection "sound". I guess I just have to call Palm in the morning for tech help, but thought I'd post here real quick and see if anyone had any tricks to try first. It's no fun suddenly being down a GPSr and a PDA all in one weekend Thanks, Kristin
