  1. I am 30 and my husband is 28. We're pretty WASPy (though very moderate politically) and we have a 3.5yr old and a 1yr old. I like to cache with them, but am also perfectly happy going out by myself, while I doubt my husband would go out and cache just for the solo fun of it. He is Army but I knew about geocaching long before he did and have wanted to get into it for several years now. I don't remember where I first heard about it, I assume it was online...
  2. Definitely do the pocket queries. Then you can send that whole file directly from GSAK right to your Magellan.
  3. I know that I like reading the detailed logs. Therefore, *I* try and leave a detailed log that someone else might enjoy reading. I'm not witty or clever and have a very plain writing style but I like coming back and filling out the logs - not just to get another smiley asap, but just so the cache owner knows I was out there hunting their cache. Plus, the sooner I can log the find, the fresher the details still are in my mind. If other people want to leave cookie cutter logs, it's no harm to me, but I do enjoy the more detailed logs I think it's because I almost get a sense of "community" thinking that there have been other cachers out there doing just what I was doing to get to the same cache - it's just kinda cool
  4. Here is the link to the page on Best Buy... Regular price $80, Sale Price $45 PLUS "up to $10 in rebates".
  5. I was afraid that my comments would be misconstrued. That's what I get for trying to write a coherent post while my 3yr old would rather that I come and play Legos with him I didn't mean to imply that I thought that it was appropriate to have a Jeep TB with that name, or even anything specific about this particular mountain. Of course none of us were around when slavery was legal or when the Native Americans were displaced, I definitely didn't mean to imply that any of us should carry guilt about those incidents. I keep getting distracted by the kids, so I don't have time to re-form all of my thoughts about what I was trying to say, so please just take this as a sincere apology to any that I've offended and know that it absolutely was NOT my intention. -Kristin
  6. By "sanitizing" history and making everything politically correct, the true danger is in forgetting the atrocities that we committed against the Native Americans. I'm not saying that means it's OK to throw around racist or derogatory terms, but there's also no sense in sanitizing everything to the point that we can pretend we live in a lily white, white-bread world.
  7. Good thought - I assume that you mean the last update filter in GSAK?
  8. Gotcha, thanks. Yeah, I keep track of my finds in GSAK - that's really helpful. That's the way that seemed to make the most sense, but thought I'd just double check. Thanks again
  9. A month or so, when I first started caching and got my premium membership and all that jazz, I ran a PQ and got my local area cache info. I dutifully uploaded all of the info to my Palm and my eXplorist. Now though, that information is no longer current. So, what's the best way to keep everything current? My guess is that I set the PQ to run weekly and re-install the info into the Palm and GPSr (via GSAK and CacheMate) as the PQ email comes through. That should set me OK for spur of the moment caching. Then, if I know that I want to go caching on a particular day, just run a PQ for instant results and update everything again? Is that right or am I making too much work for myself? Thanks! --Kristin
  10. Thanks for posting that link!! My hubby is over there right now (not near you though) and is due home this month. YAY! Anyway, I'll PM you his info. I just got into caching while he's been gone and he's already hooked, hasn't even been out once yet. He's even already talking about what GPSr he's going to get for himself, and I'm pretty sure he'll be wanting to hit up all the base caches next time he heads over.
  11. Individual caches into Palm - Yup, you can do it. Download the .gpx files (from the individual cache pages) and open them with GSAK and you can send them to your Palm same as if the files had come from a PQ. Sorry, I can't help you with the other...
  12. Or, if you think of a place where you'd like to set up a permanent cache, you could have the bike as the FTF prize...
  13. That's so awesome! That's some pretty country to go caching through, too! My husband has been out of town since I got bit by the geocaching bug, so I can't wait for him to get home (early August, yay!!) to show him how much fun it is!
  14. Ooh, pretty picture. Is that you? Thank you! It is Rodney & me. A friend of mine is building her portfolio as a pro photographer, so we got a beach shoot for free
  15. I'm still working on mine, not very exciting yet...
  16. It's your cache and you can do whatever you want with it. You have to remember that this is only a listing service, one of several. Nowhere is it written that a cache has to be published here before its found.. Nor is it written that it can't be listed elswhere first, then listed here. So you can give the coords to your friends first, post them on your own website, post them another listing service first or run an ad in the newspaper if you like. Its your cache and nobody else's beeswax how you choose to publicize it. If he found the cache first, what is he, second to find? Of course he is first to find. The second person to find it is second to find. I guess the second finder can call himself "First To Find After Publishing On Geocaching.com" . What if, instead of giving the coordinates to his friend, the owner first published the cache on Navicache (where about 2 people would have seen it), then decided to list it here? I completely agree with all of that. What's more important in this sport/hobby? Being the FTF or just going geocaching? If he had the coords and he found the cache, then it's an honest find. IMO, anyone who would get THAT worked up about losing out on FTF on a cache meant as an honor to someone else is just taking offense where none is intended.
  17. As a geo-newbie, I have to say that I thought the whole idea of the logs was to provide the cache placer with thanks and thoughts about what I as the seeker thought about the cache, if I liked the view, enjoyed the walk or whatever. I obviously don't know nearly everything about the sport yet, but one thing I've picked up on is that micros are supposed to be saved for when there's not really room for anything else. So, in the log for one cache I found that was a micro, but there was plenty of room for a larger cache, I said that in the log. I don't think I said it rudely but who knows how someone else may construe it. I am sure that this debate just goes 'round and 'round and 'round, but I would think that *most* people who enjoy geocaching wouldn't mind a little feedback about what the seekers really think about their caches. I know that if I placed a cache, I'd LOVE to hear of ways to improve it to make it more enjoyable for everyone. Long story short, it's possible to be honest without being a jerk.
  18. Corndog? No. You have to eat a Turkey leg. Why, I don't know, but it's the no. 1 delicacy at Disney. Yes, all my posts to this thread were from the perspective of someone who gets picked up at the airport, and uses Disney mass transit (monorail and buses). Rest assured it all runs on time, and you can go anywhere you want to go and do anything. Renting a car is just a waste of time and money. No way! You know how much money we saved by driving off property for all our meals?! Of course, we just drove there in the first place, but dang, that food on-site is $$$!
  19. For other great deals on GPS, don't forget to check ebay! I wish I had! I have an Explorist 210 and am very happy with it Oh, another site that often has very good prices is www.tigerdirect.com
  20. No, I've been aware of geocaching for a few years now and it always seemed like so much fun (I'm a big mapping/trip routing/gadget junkie) and this seemed like a great way to combine all of those, plus my husband's constant "let's go DO something". I always thought that the GPS systems were out of my price range but then a friend of mine from another internet message board was getting another of her friends hooked and said what she had paid for a Garmin etrex Legend and I was very pleasantly surprised I went out and got a GPS and a Palm (couldn't resist the chance to get another gadget) and I'm hooked!
  21. In GSAK, choose File, Export, Cachemate PDB file. Then drag and drop the PDB file into your Palm QuickInstall and HotSync.
  22. Get an All Found PQ emailed to you, unzip it and drag that file into the Temporary Places area on the left side of Google Earth. Then click File then Save Image. Like this: Thanks!! You placed the very first cache I ever found! (home depot)
  23. I've only got 13 finds - 4 in Cincinnati and 9 in Savannah, so it was hard to make it look impressive
