  1. In Canada, you can get a Magellan 315 for about $125.00 at Canadian Tire... in U$, this is about a coffee and two trinkets. It does not have colour, it does not have free floating tri-axis compass, and it does not have expandable memory, but I've been using mine for more than 4 years, and I would not change for anything.
  2. Good luck - I've been trying for years - even before I started geocahing. Hey - at least you can down load image shots from TerraServer - if you're in Canada, the pics end a the border :-(
  3. Hi I did the same thing, and had to send my unit to be replaced... Not exactly sure what happened, but it wasn't good. I sent it to Bills Electronics in Mildmay, Ontario. There is probably someone much closer to you who can help. Note that this wasn't free - I had to pay for the fix, in spite of the fact that I download (possibly the wrong?) firmware from the official site. I did this well over a year ago, so the details fade. Good luck.
  4. I have a 315 already, and a birthday soon. Should I upgrade (if her Majesty will even allow) to one of the newer Magellans? Are they really that much better (I mean aside from being obvious chick-magnets)
  5. Hello all Does anyone know of a site that will let you down load a digital topo map and / or satalite image of any given location in Canada. There are a bunch for the states, but just like the CNN weather map, they forget about anything North of the border. Thanks for any help.
  6. I've found all my finds in blizzards. All of them... Every one of 'em... ok - just the one I've found so far... but it really was in a blizzard. Where there's a signal, there's a way.
  7. Took my 315 on a flight to Jamaica, no worries. I showed to to the customs guy, and the first flight attendant, and she took it to the cockpit to get the pilots OK. All the way there, the FAs were asking for updates (I took an atlas from my day timer, and updated our route). On the way back, the FA just said "Oh hi, you mind if I show this to my freind?". Let the staff know what you're up to, and they're likely to help - hide and you're in big trouble.

Well, in general I'm not sure that's a good idea, due to all the rules (both chache rules and base rules). Having said that, check out "The Fort", in Kingston Ontario. Postal code K7K 3E8.
  9. I was out with the dogs in local woods one afternoon, no map, compass, GPS.. Dogs took off after rabbit. I took off after dogs. 30 minutes later had NO IDEA where I was. Was not worried about dying of exposure, but as I'm military was rather worried about dying of embarrasment. Fortunatly, followed setting sun west to road, then road to car (mind you, it was a two hour hike through every pricker bush in SE Ontario). Bottom line - GPS, Map, Compass and yes, cell phone are a good idea.
  10. Warrant in Militia Chief Clerk with JSG HQ Kingston in civvie life do I count as 2?
