  6. from the BMTC-KY mailing list: I read a review of last year's Las Vegas "Urban Challenge" in the New York Times a couple of months ago and was happily surprised to see that the popular urban orienteering event is coming to Lexington this September. Teams of two are given maps and clues to locate a dozen checkpoints across the city using only their feet and public transportation to get around. They take digital photos of themselves in front of the landmark, building, whatever, that they believe to be the correct checkpoint as proof that they were there. So, the race is part athletic skill, but mostly mental (puzzle-solving, mapreading, navigating, street knowledge, trivia knowledge, etc.). By chance, I learned today that the event offers a significant discount for early registration, which ends on JANUARY 9TH. If you register through active.com by January 9th, the fee is $99 (plus a $6 processing fee) for a team of two. After that, the entry fee increases by $50. You needn't identify your teammate until a week before the event, so you can register now even if you haven't a clue with whom you might race in September. It's pretty far away on the calendar, I realize, but I figured I'd let you all know that you can save a third off the entry fee if you know now that you'll want to do the race. You can find details and register for the event at www.urbanchallenge.com From the NYT article, it sounded as though these teams went to great lengths to get the upper hand in these races. They set up these elaborate networks of communications and internet access. While only 2 can actually complete the race, they can call upon anyone to help them figure out clues, locate landmarks, etc. So, these teams would have friends and family planted all over the place with cell phones and laptops and maps ready to render assistance. Sounds pretty wild. I'm registered. See you on the Lextran! (Hey - what'll they do if Lextran goes belly-up before September? It'd be a serious advantage to the runners in the race, huh?)

I'm planning this trip on a shoestring (even thinner) budget, and if someone can either put me up out of the kindness of their hearts, or accept whatever i can give em in return, i'd GREATLY appreciate it! please drop em a line via email - and i'll check back here when i can - Thanks! jenn the white diamonds pirates lexington, ky
