  1. The newer Magellan eXplorist series of GPSs are boasting 14 parallel channels instead of the 12 channels found on most units. My question is: does it matter? I understand the concept of more-is-better; but would I notice a difference with only 15% more channels? The unit specifications still only claim a three-meter accuracy, the same as 12 channel models. Will it get a 15% faster lock? Drain the battery 15% faster? Or, am I missing the point of the two extra channels all-together? Just wondering
  2. For anyone interested, Tiger GPS has the XL on pre-order for $348. Just over a $100 cheaper than suggested retail of $449, which is probably what your local REI is going to be selling it for. http://www.tigergps.com/magellanexploristxl.html
  3. Ticklegrass is the name of the road we live on. I think it's a stupid name so I picked it.

  5. There's one other thing to consider and that's the performance of Mobipocket. As far as palm applications go it's one of the most intensive out there. If you buy one of the cheap/old palm devices you'll end up with a processor speed of 16 or 20Mhz, the newer palms have 33 or 66Mhz which help. I'm running a 33Mhz Clie that is overclocked to 44Mhz for Mobipocket and it's still not great. If you've got $600 to spare you could get one of the new 200Mhz models, I haven't tried Mobipocket on these units but I'll bet it's a dream.

That includes rechargeable NI-MH battery pack, and headset. That's why I've kind of swayed to this model.
  8. What two-way radios have you bought/used? and why? I've been looking at: -Motorola T7200 -Kenwood TK-3131 -Uniden GMRS480 The Motorola and Kenwood are two of the top rated, the Uniden isn't typically compared with these radios but it's half the price with mostly the same features. If anyone has any other units they prefer then let me know. Please give me your input so I can make a better and informed decision.

  10. My first, and current, GPS is the Magellan Meridian Plat. At first I had wondered if I should have gone with the Garmin (both of my brothers have Garmins) because it would act weird around ground zero of a cache and struggles in canyon walls. After talking with my bro's and reading numerous posts this seems to plague both brands. So, since I can't fix these issues with any unit then I am happy with the fact that I saved about $100 by going with the Magellan. 11. Due to the fears of September 11 not even geocaching is immune. The following article appeared in today's edition of the Salt Lake Tribune. -------------- BOMB SQUAD CHECKS OUT SUSPICIOUS BOX The Salt Lake City bomb squad checked a suspicious World War I-type ammunition box at about 1550 W. 2300 North on Tuesday night. A technician at a nearby sewage treatment plant saw a man in a pickup drop the box at the side of the road at 8 p.m. After opening the box at 10:30 p.m., police found pictures of a dog and a wedding and a logbook. The box was left by someone who participates in "geocaching," a global scavenger hunt using global positioning systems to find items, said Detective Dwayne Baird. The box was left in a field near two oil refineries and the sewage plant. Police have yet to contact the person who left the box.
