It can in no way be a letterbox without the stamp. Many newbie cachers are clueless about letterboxes. We've taken to putting prominent notes on the stuff that isn't supposed to be traded. "THIS IS NOT A TRADE ITEM!!!" Probably should engrave it into the handles of stamps, too! That and a flame this high really burns my butt! CR *** In case you didn't know, any box you find with a stamp can be considered a letterbox. To claim the find, you still have to exhange impressions, though. ***
  2. Thanks for the review. Looks I can stop drooling over the Color and stick with my STMap. It does everything I want except built-in compass and the extra memory. Even then, I have street level maps from Topo covering my entire caching territory. CR
  3. Do you think a "pass word protected" access to the coordinates and descriptions of caches would cut down on cache losses, and vandalism? Nope Would a required fee to "play the game" seriously hurt the growth of geocaching? Yep Would geocaching be better off if "quality, rather than quantity" was its main focus? Yep, but who's to ensure "quality?" What is "quality?" Define "quality." CR
  4. quote:Originally posted by canadazuuk:This thread really needs some closing remarks from Jeremy perhaps, and then it can go buh bye... Maybe it shouldn't have been brought up to begin with. It's been mentioned to me that some people don't post here because of the fussing, fighting, and finger pointing. Say the slightest thing wrong and you're jumped all over. Accusations fly at the slightest of perceived wrongs. No wonder people are afraid to post here. If I weren't thick skinned, I probably wouldn't either. CR

  6. Sissy turned me on to these logs on Homeless Bathtub cache. For ease read this log by Feros Family first, then this one by Geo Dee. I was rolling! CR
  7. Try this rough link for caches in Connecticut with the word "canoe." http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Ageocaching.com+%22In+Connecticut%22+canoe Use the same with varying words to get what you want. Not elegant, but workable. Hope that helps. CR
  8. How many are you looking for? What's your budget? Email me with particulars I'll see what I can do. CR
  9. Look in the Yellow Pages under screenprinting and call around for someone who can do "pad printing." It's a silkscreen process that allows printing on odd shaped items. I used one for baseballs one time. If the item is flat, you might get a kick out of screenprinting them yourself. Try your local library. AC Moore has a kit I saw the other day. It was complete with diazo emulsion and inks! The inks should be durable enough for your uses. CR
  10. I am an engraver. All the gear I work with is computer controlled. Diamond drag metals; flat, odd shaped, cylindrical. Brunish; flat stock metals. Rotary; soft metals, plastics, acrylics Laser; wood, plactic, composites, acrylic, glass, coated metals. It's a CO2 laser so it doesn't cut or mark raw metal. I also have a ceramic coating I mark hard metals with. Email me with info. CR

  12. yeah, I've seen the pinecone thing. Also, seen the fake sprinker head, fake fence strut, and the fake birdhouse. CR
  13. Yeah, I'm not a hunter either--used to as a kid, but not anymore. It just never really turned me on. Too boring. I'd rather fish. That way, I don't freeze my @ss off in the process being boring out of my wits. Anyway, one more thing to consider. Hunters will pay for bear tags. So instead of spending money, the could be making money and get the population culled. CR
  14. After panning around on it a little my first impressions of the map are not nearly as exciting as when the new Nearest Cache list came out. Suggestions: -Create a &f=1 function to filter my finds/hides. -Have the default zoom something other that zoomed right into my house. I have to click out a few times just to see the nearest cache, much less anything of interest. Thanks! CR
  15. They're planning to control the population or reduce the population? If they're sterilizing an animal that lives for 25-30 years in the wild, that doesn't do much for reducing population. Seems to me the only thing this scheme will do is slow the growth, nothing else. ...and then you'll only start seeing results in a few years when the pups come of age and can't reproduce. It does nothing for the reproducers of today. Sounds hair brained to me. CR
  16. Yep, if I ever got the chance to be face-to-face with a real-life pirate, I'd call him "childish and stupid." Hey, what the heck, he'd probably would have killed me anyway. CR
  17. quote:Originally posted by Cupajo:I've never said new people _shouldn't_ start geocaching if they can't compete. What I've said is that many of them probably _won't_. Everybody here who started geocaching to have status on a leaderboard, raise your hand. CR
  18. quote:Originally posted by Cupajo: quote:Originally posted by Sissy-n-CR:Looks like someone doesn't want stats until he won't be at the bottom of the list. You know, this is the kind of snobbish elitest attitude that will only get worse if GC institutes their own leaderboard. _That's_ what will keep people away. You can stick a little winking smilie on the end to make it look like a joke, but you still come across as an [*******]. Funny, but I wasn't joking. Looks like you're trying to get yourself banned, but that's okay. However, I do hope you stick around and enjoy the game. Let me quote some more for your words: quote:Placing a ranking system on it now would stunt it's growth. For the record, I'm not saying to never institute ranking. All I'm saying is wait a year or two. Give the geocaching community a chance to build a tradition and grow in number a little bit. I'm curious, then, why wait a year or two? Wouldn't there be yet another newbie with so little experience arguing the same thing? "Isn't only 4 or 5 years too short of a time to have tradition?" Most likely. If you read back over the archives, both here and usenet, you'll find people make the same arguements over and over on many different things. Many times they are proved wrong, yet that doesn't prevent yet another newbie to bring it up again like it was a fresh idea. (Yeah, before you go and reference, I've been guilty of it, too.) Flask, I hope you weren't referring to my comment. Quite frankly, I couldn't care less if you, or anyone else, want to be in a leaderboard or not. What I was saying had nothing to do with that. CR
  19. Looks like someone doesn't want stats until he won't be at the bottom of the list. CR
  20. So is this going to happen to the cache page images as well? That'd be completely screwed up. CR
  21. quote:Originally posted by Cupajo:What I've said is that seeing a leaderboard with astronomical numbers will discourage _new people_ from _starting_. Well, I guess everyone is entitled to be wrong. Your arguement is about as valid as we shouldn't have a world wide leaderboard because there are places that have more caches than others. For instance, how in the world, if we all started at zero tomorrow, could I compete with cachers in CA, especially around any major city? I couldn't, but by your standard I might as well not even start because there is no way I could be first. Unless you have some kind of mental problem relating to always having to be number 1, I don't see a leaderboard discouraging anyone from starting. To take the baseball metaphor further, I think you're way out in left field. CR
