  1. You can also try the Garmin Ique 3600 if you want to get a little more fancy. I am using it now (about $250 on ebay with all the pieces and maps you need). I have AUTOROUTING and PROXIMITY ALERTS set up. Effectively while driving I have a machine telling me when I am near a cache, then showing me on a map where that cache is. Then I read the file with details. I was driving home from work and picked up six CACHE & DASH finds in less than two hours.
  2. no PMs coming through. The Groundspeak web site is saying I have zero (no) PM messages awaiting.
  3. Okay this is how I am doing this. I do not have time to keep track of everyone who might want this Laptop, or might change their mind on it, so I am relisting it again here (and closing my other email). If you want it, post a message here saying SOLD, and immediately send a PAYPAL payment for $170 ($150 plus $20 shipping) to my paypal account ktjensen@gmail.com You can look on Amazon or on Ebay for my "ktjensen" user name and see I NEVER have any business problems. If I check and DO NOT see a PAYPAL notice cooresponding with someone saying they bought it, then I will mention that is a reposting. I have an old Toshiba laptop light grey color. It can handle running Windows 98 only. I have it running with a wifi card, and it has a built in CD burner. Runs, boots, fine. Can even watch movies with it (via DVD player). Great for portable use. in the car (store your maps for your Legend Etrex, upload photos with your digital camera, burn CDs to share with friends). Synchronize your PDA to it. Use Wifi at free wifi hotspots when you want that. I will sell it for $150. Shipping will be $20. I will look for the model number, and hard drive size when I get home. Maybe in a week I will start thinking about best offer, so go ahead and ask me. Or maybe I will ebay it, or sell it on Amazon as used. Toshiba 4020CDT Model PA5402UB 64 MB ram 6GB hard drive Pentium II combination CD Recordable and DVD drive Netgear 802.11b wireless PC card model MA401 usb port (older version), serial port, pcmcia slots (two) Battery is old (will not keep a charge long) so you need to replace the battery, or plug it in when using. (getting a car charger for this is trivial, as they are available all over ebay). I always keep my laptops plugged in because wifi eats power (at least the older versions do). The system does work (all parts), and WILL NOT be dead on arrival. But I will not guarentee it for more than that it will be functional, and you can check that. Still this is cheaper than most GPS devices!!! and definately needed. I think I have the manual and original disks here too. Yes it has the power cord. Someone has got to want this laptop?

  6. I am trying to generate further discussion on this. Google map seems to be keeping locations (business addresses and the coordinate cross reference) up to date. The GOOGLE MAP tool (combined with GOOGLE itself) has the ability to search for a specific address, and translate the coordinates into a POI or Waypoint. Look at this brief note a few messages down in this discussion. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...3entry2105223 What if there was a tool to search for all "Restaurants" (or bars, or pubs, or theatres, or malls in your town -- or maybe your zipcode, or maybe your zipcode and others within 10 miles of your zipcode) and download the name, address, phone number, and coordinates into a *.GPX file (or something equivalent). Then the POIs could be given a category to be used with a GPS for directions. Sort of an active, updated POI generation tool. Maybe the tool could be linked to the advanced (payed version) of GOOGLE EARTH that way the GOOGLE folks get a revenue from the tool, and would not be likely to try to stop the tool (as it uses their paid tool). What do you think? I emailed a few people to see if they could direct me to others that might be in pursuit of this goal of a group POI/waypoint tool using existing business addresses. 7. But this is great!! This is like the holy grail!! of POIs (Points Of Interest) and Waypoints!! There are people who are designing GOOGLE MAP interface tools to do searches and displays of their tracks. You and I need to try to generate some interest from these "google map folks" to build a web site tool that does this like you mentioned. A tool to take multiple google found addresses, and consolidate them into a *.GPX file (or equivalent) for download into a PDA tool (like cachemate). I will contact the author for Cachemate and ask him if he (or his minions/ aka friends and colleagues) will take this on as a project. Also need to find the GOOGLE EARTH folks that are using that tool. I think you just started a snowball, that will turn to an avalanche

  9. Office Depot has them at their stores, they are shutting down. Brand new for $100.
  10. You guys are great at Northern New York !! This is one of my frequented travel destinations. I will bookmark you so that I can use the POIs later. I also found a couple WIFI hotspot POI web sites 1) T-mobile Hotspot listings selfcare.hotspot.t-mobile.com/locations 2) Free Wifi by state listing www.wififreespot.com 3) wifinder.com
  11. Well I might evertually experience this. I would check that the coordinates are correct. They should be valid versions. Then check to see if you have the latest software installed on your Legend C. These device can hang out in warehouses for months, when new software comes out, they need to be updated.
  12. I have been looking around for one of these. Everything is expensive, so I figured I should be able to find a use one from someone? I have the Garmin clip on the back of my etrex, so I just need a windshield/ window mount that can attach to the clip.
  13. Looks like Garman has a pretty good listing of POI points built into there units. I am going to test out their POIloader tool (free application) to see if I can download the list. Maybe I can then change the parameters of POIs to create proximity alerts for waypoints. I like proximity alerts to warn me that a geocache is nearby, or a bathroom.
  14. Okay lets say I do this. 1) Save my unlock code for my Garmin Ique 3600 to a file. 2) Email it to my second computer. 3) Attach my Legend C to this second computer 4) Unlock the software on the second computer. This should all work? Maybe? Maybe I will give it a try later. I am now using my original version 3.x mapsource maps (uploaded to my Legend color), and mapsource 6.x application. No unlock codes needed and uploaded fine.
  15. I just saw a new in package Garmin Legend at the closing down Office Depot stores for $100. I also saw the Palm Lifedrive for $355 which is cheaper than any sale I have seen.
  16. did not work for me. The City navigator I have (v4 I think) on cd came with a Street Pilot III and I have it installed on my 76cs. I don't know if that will help but...
  17. I think that a pay for database web site is okay. People have to make a living. I like the free ones too though. Look here http://www.swopnet.com/waypoints/ Does anyone have a listing of the PAY poi databases? Guess I just need to look deeper at the mapsource (Garmin) web site, as I am sure someone has a license to provide this.
  18. I guess that it is true that Garmin creates there own POI databases to include with their maps. I was looking at some software that was included with my Gamin Ique PDA-GPS that was some company that is cataloging POI in a text readable address format, rather than a Lat/log format. I need to investigate if this service is a viable aggressive datasource that is updated with listings for gasolene stations and restaurants, and other information. I need to check the PATHAWAY web site to see if they list POI sources.
  19. This is a sensible suggestion!! I would add that if there is leaf cover, and the clues say it was not found in a while, and the log entries imply that it was easy to find (and you have not) then maybe the cache was muggled (taken destroyed, etc.).
  20. Here is what I am going to attempt with this: 1) Bought a refurbished Ique 3600 with CS and CN available on the CD with a unlock code for it. Noticed that during the install process (on my laptop computer) the screens say clearly " If you register your email address with Garmin you can use the software on a second GPS without any additional cost". So I am going to take Garmin on it's offer, as I did register officially with my email address. (should have done a screen capture print to a PDF file to send back to Garmin). On the Ique 3600 the software WAS NOT already installed. 2) I am expecting delivery of a Garmin Etrex Legend Color today. I will attempt to install this software to the Etrex Legend C. If it fails to install I will be emailing Garmin, like you did (someone here did). I will be aggressive with getting my second activation code. I will mention: a) I have an original Etrex Legend, and considered competing products from Magellen and Lowrance, but stayed with Garmin during my recent upgrade; I bought the refurbished unit knowing that it contained software with the ability to unlock use on two GPS devices; c) I am a frequently Geocacher, who blogs/discusses the benefits and comparison between the Garmin devices and other competitor products on the geocaching.com, and gpspassion.com bargainpda.com web sites in their forum sections. I would think that warrents consideration from your Vice President of sales, or your Vice President of customer relations (or equivalent) at Garmin, and that the release of one additional software registration/activation is warrented for my unique situation. 3) I will install the software on my desktop computer, and see if I can accomplish registration/activation from a second computer if I keep the desktop from communicating to the Garmin web site for any code verification. Guess I will see what happens. Yes. You can install it on as many computers as you need. You will use the same unlock code for each install. The unlock code is associated with the particular serial number of your unit. The software is intended for use in a GPS receiver, and their main concern is that you not install it to more than 2.
  21. well we are getting good at hitting things with our military stuff now, and getting good at automating airplane landings, so pilots dont make human error with ease. We are also getting good at creating mcirochips that know how to process RF infoormation more effectively (higher accuracy, faster like the SirfIII). Yep it is all good.
