Actually, my farthest west cache is a multi-cache with stage one in British Columbia and final stage near where I live in Saskatchewan. Otherwise that would be a cache in Washington or Oregon. I'm hoping to 'fix' this next fall by finding a cache further west than that!

My farthest south cache I found without coordinates, hoping that there would be a cache at a roadside turnout... and there was! I took coordinates of the cache after signing the logbook, then looked those up on the website! I love that that one is my furthest south cache!

  2. I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy S, but have not yet had it out geocaching. I know there used to be issues with the GPS in these phones, but a bit of poking around indicates it was likely fixed in September. I'm looking forward to trying it out, and just got everything set up today to do so. There are some good free apps for geocaching out there - be sure to do a google search!

Yesterday I tested out my phone on the highway and out geocaching. While driving, the unit sometimes lost GPS contact - once notably over a 20 km distance at highway speeds. I used c:geo to geocache - finding a cache I had previously spotted from my vehicle but couldn't retrieve due to muggles. c:geo indicated that the cache was still 4.5m away when at ground zero, so I'd say that's pretty much in line with most GPSrs. It did seem more prone to drift than my Oregon, though.

  4. Edmonton, Alberta and Ottawa, Ontario seem to be puzzle towns.

I've had lots of fun with puzzles in both places.

I'd like to second the vote for Edmonton, Alberta. There are a lot of nice caching areas in and around the city where you can find caches. There are numerous parks and natural areas along the river and ravines. There are all styles of puzzles - some are fun, some are maddening. And the Edmonton cachers play off each other a lot, which is also fun.

My personal favourites are the puzzle caches of JBeck2 - Newby Geocacher

  5. We (League of Robots, Henchman and myself - el_Fudgeeo) were thinking of making the pilgrimage out to the cache on its 10th anniversary. Perhaps if others are interested, we could make a group trip to the cache as part of your event. Would that work?

Sounds great! I'd like to include as many Saskatchewan cachers as possible (not just the usual Saskatoon crowd), so Saturday is looking like the more practical option for out of town folks. If you don't mind going the day after the anniversary, then I think it would be great to have a group head out there together.

Myself, I am more interested in planning a sort of 'after party' and probably wouldn't head out to the cache again (I found it a couple of years ago). I'm leaning towards renting the Elk's Hall in Asquith and making it a potluck event. That seems like the easiest way to accomodate an unknown and potentially large number of cachers. However if the weather sucks, potentially very few cachers will come and even Saskatoon cachers might have a hard time making it out there! I still need to figure out a back-up plan...

  6. I have that some on-line sites have problems with the geotagging. When I upload to my flickr photo stream it works no problem. I also upload to panoramio to have my photographs show up in Google Earth and it used to work but a while back it stopped working automatically. For panoramio I open and save a copy using Picasa, another free software, and those will upload and automatically pick up the coordinates no problem. You may want to give that a try if the website you upload to does not recognize the geotagging automatically.

Picasa is the one that didn't recognize the geotag automatically. Panoramio did. I keep looking for my pic on GE, but nothing yet.

  7. Thanks for sharing this info. I'm curious what other people use, too. I have an Oregon 550 that is supposed to automatically geotag photos. The online site suggested by Garmin didn't recognize the coordinates of my photo.

  8. January 7th will mark the 10th anniversary of Saskatchewan's first and oldest geocache - GC14F, Sask-cache-one. I am contemplating hosting an event in Saskatoon to mark the occasion! I am trying to determine which day would be best to celebrate on:

    • Fri. Jan. 7/11 - The true anniversary date and have an evening event
    • Sat. Jan. 8/11 - Saturday lends itself to more options, and an afternoon or early evening event could be attended by more out of town people

If you are not from Saskatoon would you come to a Saturday event?

  9. Because sometimes my brain isn't perfect. Life is pulling me many directions right now...

    Here's Garmin's suggestion:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I will be happy to help you with this. I am sorry to update did not work and caused these issues. I would like to try and force the software in doing a boot block.

I would be happy to help you do a boot block on your device.

First make sure the unit is turned off.

Next please download and install the webupdater program.

    http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp

After installing the program, please launch it and proceed to the point that it asks to find the device.

Now press and hold the power button, and plug the unit into the computer. I would recommend you hold the power button with your off had (IE a right handed person should hold it with their left)

Click on Find Device and let it find your unit.

Now click next and agree in Webupdater while continuing to hold the power button.

Let Webupdater finish installing and now unplug your unit. Let go the power button and reboot the unit. It should load in the software and your unit should now behave like normal.

  10. To all that have bricked their 550. Mine is recovered. I tried to recover mine using Method #2 in the Oregon Wiki and it didn’t work because I tried the 2.50_Updater.zip which is for the x00 models. Use the rgn firmware for x50 in the next paragraph down and it should work.

Here's the link to the recovery.

    Here's the x50 recovery software.

I updated my GPSr this morning and bricked it! Thanks so much for this posting! The recovery worked on the first try and I did not lose any data! Thank god! I had waypoints marked where my great, great and great, great, great grandparents farmed and are buried, as well as a geotagged photo of where my fiancé proposed to me! It would have made me sick to lose all this.... and my main geocaching tool!

I've now updated to the most recent version and look forward to seeing what the multi-cache improvement is all about!

  11. My current geocaching goals (which may or may not be completed in 2010):

    1) continue filling my D/T chart (currently at 65/81)

    2) create at least one Earthcache

    3) keep working on all the challenge caches I can!

    4) win the Winter Cache Game!

    So here's the new update:

    1) making slow progress on this, but hope to find a few more in Wisconsin in a couple of weeks (currently at 68/81)

    2) waiting until I'm done moving, dealing with my mom's estate more, etc.

    3) completed and found one more, and set out my own challenge too! Every year a cache... challenge!

    4) I won that way back in January!

And I also found Canada's oldest cache this week! Gotta love the oldies! 100ish oldest caches in Canada

Good luck to everyone in pursuing their goals!

  12. I was born in Moose Jaw. Moved to alberta in 1973 and only been back a few times and never for caching. Mind you I have not been back for more then a bakers dozen years. You say peaple still live there, I could have sworn I turned the light of when we left. Oh thats right you still use candles, right? Have you seen a boxer running around there, heard you could see a dog running away for a week, email ifyou do ,, Thanks

Wow. That's a pretty rude response from someone who actually used to live in Saskatchewan. Sure doesn't paint Albertans in a good light.

Wow, It was a joke, sorry it went over your head. Lighten up a bit.

It's very hard to gauge the intent behind a person's words over the internet... no behavioural context. I've been on the receiving end of condescending comments about Saskatchewanians too many times... just triggered old feelings, I guess. I accept your implied apology.

  14. I was in Regina a couple years ago and was surprised on how few caches were available at the time. Saskatoon seems to have a little more activity.

Rest assured, the situation has improved since then.

  15. I'm not sure if you'd really call it a goal or not, seeing as I have every intention of it happening, but I am looking forward to finding Canada's first geocache in the next three weeks. Then I will have found Canada's three oldest caches, and 4 of the 5 oldest. There probably aren't many cachers that could say the same!

  16. I've scratched myself and even had a stick poke me up the nose once, but other than that I've been pretty good out on the trail.

I'm not so fortunate to say the same about events - once I sprained my ankle going down someone's deck stairs in the dark! And no, I had not been drinking!
