  1. I recently tried Stabilicers and they seemed very durable; but a bit heavy and bulky as they do not fold-up. They positively grip everything in a mixed environment, snow-ice-rock-wood-mud. Easy to put on and maintain. Have only worn them for a rough 4+ mile hike/bushwhack and they gave me a lot of confidence.
  2. The HCX is a no brainer....if you like the Etrex family Color - maps look great Faster to lock on Faster to calculate Holds a signal Better Good accuracy 1000 Waypoints Huge Map Storage Capabilites Great Battery Life Unlimited POI Storage Huge track Storage Very Happy with our Vista HCx (the Compass is a great feature as you don't have to be moving to keep oriented) Happy Birthday!
  3. Many times I have found a cache in an area we would like to explore, then cut and paste the the Waypoint Name or coords into a new PQ page as a centerpoint. A simple link on the cache page that would create a new PQ with that cache as a center point would be handy for us lazy folks....maybe it's already there? anyway....Happy New Year!
  4. Most Excellent AVGraphics! Keep it UP, Andy!!!!

  6. A GPS is a useful toy – besides quickly telling you where you ARE and where you’ve BEEN and how to get to SOMEPLACE else and how far away that SOMEPLACE is and then RETURN…. It’s an accurate clock, an odometer, a speedometer, a trip calculator, a poor flashlight, a stopwatch, an alarm clock, Some, an altimeter, Some, have tide tables, Some, tell sunrise and set, Some, the phases of the moon, Some, have compasses. Some, have radios, Some, are phones, Some, are PDA’s, You can- -Record your journey so that you can re-live it later on a digital map or Google Earth. -Sync your digital camera with the GPS clock to know exactly where you were when you took that picture. -Feel like trails are optional and going “off” only adds to your adventure. -Find a can in the woods, in a beautiful spot that some thoughtful stranger was willing to share with you… -Hide a can in the woods, in a beautiful spot that some grateful stranger will enjoy… Most of this can be done with Compass and a Map, and you still need both, but a good tool… I mean toy….can enhance your outdoor adventure.
  7. Ran 3 this morning........Got 1..............
  8. Our friend's sister was out hiking/caching with us and was operating the GPS'r for the first time. She was over-focused on watching the needle (which we warned her about) and nearly stepped on a silent, sizable Timber Rattler near GZ. Shook everyone up...she hasn't cached with us since.
  9. I don't believe database is broken, just that page. There is a correctly ordered list (at least the old order) when you look at My Geocaching Log (All) page and My Geocaching Details page. These can be found by picking Quickview| Watchlist|Geocaches along the top and Show all Logs for: Caches, above the logs.
  10. I think you can create a PQ for an area. Load the PQ GPX into GSAK. Run a filter with "Owner Name" filled out Export the results to a GPX and open with Google Earth you should be able to create the desired results.
  11. I calibrate the compass whenever I use it or have any question about the direction the needle points. Some times a couple times an outing in tough terrain. Doesn't take long and you get to enjoy the scenery all around you...twice. If your compass is turned on, you are always using your compass when you slow down or stop. The GPSr does not know what direction it is pointing unless it/you are moving.
  12. Many times we get to cache pages from notification emails. We see a cache find or DNF and wonder if we have it already. As our find list grows longer, our memory seems to get shorter. This "Found" feature would be great. If this info was an added comment on the notification email that would also be handy! also.. The greasemonkey script works GREAT! Thanks Lil Devil!
  13. I thought it would be nice if the Cache Listing page could indicate if it was already found by the logged on user. A big Red Check or Smiley Icon prominently displayed somewhere on the page would be great. Right now we have to scroll down through the logs to find our found log or open Geocaching.com Google Maps to find a smiley. I'm sure there are other ways also.
  14. I like these pens, though a bit pricey to leave in a cache. G2 Mini Retractable
  15. Just had a drifting issue this weekend running 2.70/2.60 after a hard reset. Recycling the GPS'r power had me jump 370' to the correct spot.....Oh well back to 2.70/2.30..........
  16. You can only "mark" a current location, which manually creates a new waypoint, then you can edit the coordinates, name, icon etc. with the toggle to be what you want. Generally the way to go with multi's in the field.
  17. Based on some posts/links on this forum I was able to create a Topo map for Northern half of NJ from free sources. You are welcome to use these maps “at your own risk”. I am not an expert at the creation or installation of these maps. The map is transparent (is visible through other maps like City Navigator) and has 20' contours. The area is generally north of N40 4.735. I have used it for a couple of weeks on my Vista Hcx and found it very helpful. I also created a map for water features of the same region. These maps show more detail than the Garmin US Topo. I used this excellent link to learn how to create the maps. Creating Custom Topo Maps for Garmin GPS After downloading these maps, they will need to be added to your Garmin Mapsource software. Then they can uploaded to your GPS'r with the standard procedure. Remember you have to upload "ALL" your current map sets at the same time to your GPS’r ....as your current mapset will be ERASED! These maps (.img files) may be downloaded from the following links. Northern NJ Topo Northern NJ Water To add maps to your Mapsource software you will need to download this software/tools. MapSetToolKit cGPSMapper I would create a folder called “Maps” and put the software and map files there. Follow the directions outlined below to add the maps to your Garmin MapSource software. 1. Launch MapSetToolkit. 2. Click on the "Select IMG files" button. Select the map folder you made. 3. Select one or more img files, then click "Add" button. 4. In the Mapset Directory field, select the Maps folder that you created and click OK. 5. Enter a name (I used "NJ Topo Northern") in the "Mapset Name" field. (Space characters is allowed) 6. In Family ID, enter a number between (1 – 65535, I used 8000). Make sure this number is not being used in any other Families ID. (Look at “Mapset Installed” list box and verify that your FID number is not used.). Product code will be changed automatically to put the value 1. 7. Click on the "..." button beside the 'cgpsmapper' field and select cgpsmapper.exe file in your map folder and then click OPEN. 8. Make sure the "Install in Mapsource" box is checked. 9. Click the START button. 10. When all is done, check to see if your mapset is listed in the “Mapset Installed” list box. It should be there. 11. Repeat the process if you want to add the water map using a different mapset name and FID. Close. 12.Now start Mapsource, build your mapsets and upload to your GPS’r. Hope this works for you Garmin users as I have enjoyed caching in the woods with these detailed topo’s.
  18. Created a route with Google Earth, saved as KML, and uploaded. The uploaded route shows no points and is unable to delete from my saved routes. When I open the saved file with Google Earth it indicates 165 points....any suggestions???? Thanks in advance.

  24. We have been caching for almost a year and really enjoy the family outdoor fun. One of the reoccurring adventures is the inevitably desire to be on the other side of a free flowing stream. We search for a suitable place to jump, a brush jamb to scramble, some hopscotching rocks, a bridge or even the graceful log crawl . We haven't resorted to wading yet, but it's been pretty cold here lately in the northeast. No epic stories so far, just wet shoes, some laughs and high fives....but I'm sure they're out there.....
